Grambling Signs 2nd Prep Star Quarterback


Kerlegan has played for 3 years but came to HS as a linebacker before being switched.

the recruiting services are going with some old info about him being placed at a JUCO and our sorry hometown paper reports straight from the service.

No, actually the process works quite the opposite. Schools announce verbal commitments from HS ball players because there is always the chance that other HS athletes could be encouraged to that school as well.

Trust me, many high school athletes who are being recruited by college programs also monitor where their peers go. They know who the top names are. If a top WR prospect knows that a top QB has signed with a particular program, he could very well make the decision to go that direction also. That is why schools make it known what players have committed to their programs. It could very well allow them to secure other players that are being recruited.

Here is another (real) example...when B.J. Johnson (WR for Univ. of Texas) was being recruited by schools coming out of South Grand Prairie (Texas) H.S., Doug tried like hell to get him to come to Grambling. When it was understood that he would not come to Grambling, Doug had asked that at the very least he tell the media that Grambling was being considered. This way, when a person picks up a recruiting guide or newspaper to read where B.J. Johnson is considering to attend they will see..."Schools considered: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Miami, LSU, Grambling, UCLA, Michigan, and Notre Dame"

The very fact that Grambling is mentioned with those programs as a consideration may be enough to turn the head of another recruit who had not considered Grambling before.

Umm actually schools don't announce anything! No school, or coach, is allowed to comment on a recruit!! The players make these announcements themselves. Many in an effort to get some of the calls to stop and some of the hype to lessen. But that doesn't always work. The university they commit to have nothing to do with it............

Thanks for the correction you are right (and I knew this)...I meant to say the players not the schools.
 
The Landers kid is from Carroll High, where I did my HS prep, from what I hear he is an awe to watch. Heard alot about LeMarque, very impressed on the recruit. Not surpised though that Grambling can pull such talent. Some may ask why is Doug recruiting two top notch QB's? I'd say Doug is making sure his tail is covered just incase one of these guys don't make it for the long haul(ie, grades, transfer, behavior, etc....). Good for the offensive side, now lets look for some top notch DB's that can come in to play with the best of them right off the bat. With the schedule on next year Doug is projecting an undefeated season for Eugene's last year. Sounds like a Richardson move as far as non-conference schedules. After this year, if not before the year starts, Doug's days will begin to number at Grambling. Pending Eugenes success this year, and Joe Gibbs(loves Doug) having a five year deal with the Redskins will open up opportunities.

I had thought about Doug and the Redskins. I wouldn't be surprised if Gibbs offered him a position on his staff. Doug would be a good OC or even quarterback coach.

I mean, a quarterback's coach, even in the league under Gibbs is a step back from Head coach of a storied college football program. I think it would be a reach even to take a coordinators job. I mean, when you're used to guiding your own ship it's kinda hard to sit in the back seat for the ride.

I day Doug's next move is D-1 Mid-Major conferece. Maybe SMU.

Yeah, me too. When they announced that Gibbs was back it crossed my mind. I wonder if Doug's son lives there. His second wife was from that area, I believe. I know he met her while playing for Washington.

Sooner rather than later?: Rumors have swirled since Wednesday - when Joe Gibbs, Williams' former coach, returned to the Redskins after 11 years away - that Williams might be in line for a NFL job.

"The biggest question that everybody has asked was: Are you going back as quarterbacks coach?" Williams said. He has appeared on more than a dozen programs - including ESPN's "SportsCenter" - since the Gibbs deal was announced, often with Redskins starter Patrick Ramsey, a Ruston native.

Williams said he had not spoken with Gibbs since he signed the Washington deal.

"A TV station in Washington had me on, and that was the first question they asked: Are we going to get you coming back?" Williams said. "But right now, I'm the coach at Grambling. I don't control that destiny."
