Jackson State football coach Robert Hughes recently rounded out his staff with the hiring of Kai Burrell.

Burrell was originally hired as linebackers coach but instead will coach the defensive line, new JSU defensive coordinator Greg Johnson said Friday.

"He has more experience along the defensive line so I switched over," said Johnson, who will coach the linebackers.

Burrell played defensive line at Grambling State under legendary coach Eddie Robinson from 1991-94. He was a four-year letterman. He served as a graduate assistant coach at Grambling in 1995, then coached at Wossman (La.) High from 1997-2000. He was a defensive graduate assistant at Toledo this past season.

"He brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy," Johnson said. "And he knows how to win."

Interestingly, Burrell played against former JSU quarterback and current JSU offensive coordinator Darrell Asberry in high school. Burrell played at Oak Grove (La.) High and Asberry at Southern Lab.

"We played them in the playoffs one year and the state championship one year," Asberry said.

Burrell was out of town Friday and couldn't be reached for comment.
