LAS VEGAS -- Legendary entertainer Gladys Knight, and 2002 Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year Clint Holmes, have pledged their support and their talents to the First Annual Las Vegas Football Classic, as they will perform at the Sept. 13 game between North Carolina A&T State University and Southern University at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Both Knight and Holmes, long-time supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), will open the festivities Sept. 13 as Knight will sing "Lift Every Voice," widely acknowledged as the Black National Anthem, while Holmes will sing the "Star Spangled Banner," prior to kick-off.

"The support that we have received for this game has just been phenomenal and to have Ms. Knight and Mr. Holmes ask to participate, is just unbelievable," said Jonathan Simon, executive director of the Las Vegas Football Classic. "What they stand for and their actions through the years have been a feather in the cap of (HBCUs). We are honored to have them participate."

Knight will also sing the national anthem at the Las Vegas Football Classic Battle of the Bands Friday, Sept. 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Other events include the Las Vegas Football Classic Kick-off Party Sept. 11, the Celebrity Golf Tournament at Silver Stone Golf Course Sept. 12 to benefit the NAACP, the Battle of the Bands and Greek Step Show on Sept. 12, the Vegas "After Dark" Concert, the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition Saturday morning, the Vendor Marketplace, the Tailgate Jam and the Neville Brothers After Party Concert.

For fans traveling to the classic, the Stardust Hotel will be the official team hotel of the North Carolina A&T team, Rio/Harrah's will be the team hotel of the Southern team and Southern alumni.

Tickets for the game begin at $13, while the Battle of the Bands in $20. Game time for the Jaguars and the Aggies is 6:00 p.m., fans nationwide are encouraged to check their local television listings. To learn more about the Las Vegas Football Classic weekend, visit

I have to give it to the promoters. They have promoted this event more than any other HBCU classic.

Even in Houston, they bought radio spots and gave away tickets. I also got a flyer in the mail a few days ago from the sponsors

The SWAC can take a few notes in promoting the SCG from these guys.
