General Question: Drum Major "Requirements"

SIR_GRAM

Legend
This is for bandmembers, ex-bandmembers, and just people who know about band...

Why do you think there is a height requirement in most bands for being Drum Major?
Is it in your band?

Is it really that serious or important?

Somebody brang Warn some water; she need cooling off!

To answer the question: height plays a part in how people respond to you. In many ways, taller heights tend to command a presence and can in a way--- represent authority.

I don't believe that it is more of a requirement in these days and times but in the past the Drum Major's height was due to being able to see him or his staff/mace while they were directing the band.

That and so we can see his azz in a parade.

Back in da day a Marching Hornet DM had 2b at least 6ft at Alabama State. It was a strict requirment in the MMH handbook. Shorter dudes in the early/late 70s like "pistol pete" and "toosie" changed the game. Thier quickness, agility, and SNAP/DRIVE soon threw the height requirments out the window.

A tall DM is intimidating and majestic. Combine 6ft along with that TALL DM HAT and they look like they TOWER above the rest of the band. You guys remember back when u were youngsters. The dudes looked like they could walk on water. Height played a big part of that.

Living proof that, that height **** don't mean a damn thing. 5'9 and strong. Fine, smooth, accurate, & effective.:ebrow:

But I can respect what ole dude at the top said about being able to see the mace and all. But, we made that **** work and truthfully speaking.........there hasn't been a tall nig_ga yet that came after that could fuk with us.
