(CNN) -- A Republican senator pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge stemming from his arrest at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, according to state criminal records.

Republican Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was arrested in June at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Roll Call newspaper reported Monday that Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was apprehended June 11 by a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of lewd behavior in an airport men's room.

Roll Call reports on the U.S. legislature. Craig denied any inappropriate conduct in a prepared statement, and said he now regrets his guilty plea.

"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions. I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."

Congress is currently in recess, and Craig's office said he was on vacation in Idaho with his family, with no public appearances scheduled.

Craig, 62, paid a $500 fine when he entered his guilty plea on August 8 in Hennepin County Municipal Court in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to state criminal records. CNN confirmed that Craig was sentenced to 10 days in jail but that sentence was stayed.

Minnesota law defines disorderly conduct as brawling, disturbing a meeting or engaging in "offensive, obscene, abusive, boisterous or noisy conduct."

According to Roll Call, the arresting officer alleged that Craig lingered outside a rest room stall where the officer was sitting, then entered the stall next door and blocked the door with his luggage.

According to the arrest report cited by Roll Call, Craig tapped his right foot, which the officer said he recognized "as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

The report alleges Craig then touched the officer's foot with his foot and the senator "proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times," according to Roll Call.

At that point, the officer said he put his police identification down by the floor so Craig could see it and informed the senator that he was under arrest, before any sexual contact took place.

Idaho's senior senator is married with three grown children and nine grandchildren. A former rancher, Craig was first elected to the Senate in 1990, after serving a decade in the House. His seat is up for re-election in 2008.

Last fall, Craig's office publicly denied assertions by Internet blogger Mike Rogers that the senator is gay. Craig's office dismissed speculation about the senator's sexuality as "completely ridiculous."

In 1982, Craig denied rumors that he was under investigation as part of a federal probe into allegations that lawmakers on Capitol Hill had sexual relationships with congressional pages, saying the "false allegations" made him "mad as hell."

He pleaded guilty so it must be true. It been rumored for along time. He should be ashame of this type of behavior.

On another note, one GOP operative that ran Alabama's attorney general's (Troy King) 2006 election campaign killed his male lover, another man and himself in FL this weekend. He worked for several anti-gay candidates throughout the south. These guys are hypocrites and liars.

Oh well. I like how the policeman showed him his badge!

The hypocracy of the whole thing.

There have been more Republicans in hot water with these gay acts than a little bit. Whats up with Republicans and restrooms?

WASHINGTON - Idaho Sen. Larry Craig, who has voted against gay marriage and opposes extending special protections to gay and lesbian crime victims, finds his political future in doubt after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from complaints of lewd conduct in a men's room.

The conservative three-term senator, who has represented Idaho in Congress for more than a quarter-century, is up for re-election next year. He hasn't said if he will run for a fourth term in 2008 and was expected to announce his plans this fall.

A spokesman, Sidney Smith, was uncertain late Monday if Craig's guilty plea in connection with an incident at the Minneapolis airport would affect his re-election plans.

"It's too early to talk about anything about that," Smith said.

Sexuality rumors denied
A political science professor in Idaho said Craig's political future was in jeopardy. And a spokesman for the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Hannah August, said Craig's guilty plea "has given Americans another reason not to vote Republican" next year.

The married Craig, 62, has faced rumors about his sexuality since the 1980s, but allegations that he has engaged in gay sex have never been substantiated. Craig has denied the assertions, which he calls ridiculous.

The arrest changes that dynamic, said Jasper LiCalzi, a political science professor at Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. He cited the House page scandal that drove Florida Rep. Mark Foley from office.

"There's a chance that he'll resign over this," LiCalzi said. "With the pressure on the Republican Party, he could be pressured to resign. If they think this is going to be something that's the same as Mark Foley ? the sort of 'drip, drip, drip, there's more information that's going to come out' ? they may try to push him out."

Already Craig has stepped down from a prominent role with Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. He had been one of Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February.

"He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision," said Matt Rhoades, a Romney campaign spokesman.

Guilty plea
According to a Hennepin County, Minn., court docket, Craig pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge on Aug. 8, with the court dismissing a charge of gross misdemeanor interference to privacy.

The court docket said Craig paid $575 in fines and fees and was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.

Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, which first reported the case, said on its Web site Monday that Craig was arrested June 11 by a plainclothes officer investigating complaints of lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the airport.

Minneapolis airport police declined to provide a copy of the arrest report after business hours Monday.

The arrest
Roll Call, citing the report, said Sgt. Dave Karsnia made the arrest after an encounter in which he was seated in a stall next to a stall occupied by Craig. Karsnia described Craig tapping his foot, which Karsnia said he "recognized as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct." FREE VIDEO

Roll Call quoted the Aug. 8 police report as saying that Craig had handed the arresting officer a business card that identified him as a member of the Senate.

"What do you think about that?" Craig is alleged to have said, according to the report.

Craig said in a statement issued by his office Monday that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.

"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."

Party difficulities
Craig joins other GOP senators facing ethical and legal troubles.

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, is under scrutiny for his relationship with a contractor who helped oversee a renovation project that more than doubled the size of the senator's home.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., acknowledged that his phone number appeared in records of a Washington-area business that prosecutors have said was a front for prostitution.

Craig, a rancher and a member of the National Rifle Association, lives in Eagle, Idaho, near the capital of Boise. He was a member of the House for 10 years before winning election to the Senate in 1990. He was re-elected in 1996 and 2002.

Last fall, Craig called allegations from a gay-rights activist that he's had homosexual relationships "completely ridiculous."

Craig says 'I am not gay,' did no wrong

By TODD DVORAK, Associated Press Writer

BOISE, Idaho - Under fire from leaders of his own party, Idaho Sen. Larry Craig on Tuesday the only thing he had done wrong was to plead guilty after a police complaint of lewd conduct in a men's room. He declared, "I am not gay. I never have been gay."

"I did nothing wrong at the Minneapolis airport," he said at a news conference with his wife, Suzanne, at his side.

Craig's defiant stance came as Senate Republican leaders in Washington called for an ethics committee review into his involvement in a police sting operation this summer in the airport men's room.

"In the meantime, the leadership is examining other aspects of the case to see if additional action is required," Sen. Mitch McConnell and other top GOP lawmakers said in a written statement.

He's trotted out that line so much in the past till he believes it. Denial is a sad thing. :(

Hypocrite.

I hope in all of that someone washed their hands!

But how is he going to claim he's innocent! That he didn't do anything wrong? :xeye: And who came up with those signs? Are the same signs for lesbos too so I'll know to get the heck out of dodge after I burst her in her lip!

He was not trying to engage in a lewd sex act, he was trying to get some tissue from the guy in the stall next door. :spin:

I wonder why this guy is denying this...if you're gay, say your gay. What's the big deal? And why did he sign a guilty plea w/o an atty present? I don't get this at all.

Probably didn't want his wife to know. Brothas aren't the only ones "undercover". But she is sticking beside him for the appearance. More power to her.

Was that his reasoning????

If so he should have stuck to that. When he took the guilty plea he pretty much said that he did it and he know what they were charging him for.
He is gay, he should just admit it.

Yall remember that one Senator from Florida Mark Foley. He was visiting pages in their dorms and sending them IM over AOL.
These repubs are getting more and more out of pocket.

F ag was trying to get some head in the airport bathroom now he's trying to deny it. YOU AIN'T GOT TO LIE CRAIG!!!

Gays scornful of senator's statement

By DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer

NEW YORK - Sen. Larry Craig's "I'm not gay" declaration met with disdain Wednesday from gay activists, many of whom knew for nearly a year ? long before his recent arrest ? of allegations that the conservative Idaho Republican solicited sex from men in public bathrooms.

They view his case as a prime example of hypocrisy ? a man who furtively engaged in same-sex liaisons while consistently opposing gay-rights measures as a politician.

"He may very well not think of himself as being gay, and these are just urges that he has," said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "It's the tragedy of homophobia. People create these walls that separate themselves from who they really are."

In Washington, some of Craig's fellow Republican congressmen began calling for his resignation, terming his conduct inappropriate. The White House expressed disappointment in the case while avoiding a statement of support for Craig.

Craig proclaimed his innocence, and his heterosexuality, on Tuesday after revelations that he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct following his arrest in June at a Minneapolis airport men's room where an undercover officer suspected him of soliciting sex.

Now the Republicans, White House, and Conservatives are finally trying to hold one of their own Accountability. After 6 years of sitting back and watching all the corruption.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Larry Craig has agreed to temporarily step down as the leading Republican on several Senate committees as pressure mounts within his party for him to resign.

On Wednesday, three Republican lawmakers, including Sen. John McCain, called on Craig to resign.

Their statements came a day after Craig made his first public statement about pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct charge relating to allegations the Idaho Republican solicited sex in a Minneapolis airport bathroom.

"I believe that he pleaded guilty, and he had the opportunity to plead innocent," said McCain, of Arizona. "So, I think he should resign. My opinion is that when you plead guilty to a crime you shouldn't serve."

"Sen. Craig pled guilty to a crime involving conduct unbecoming a senator. He should resign," said Minnesota Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

Republican Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan added: "The voters of Idaho elected Sen. Craig to represent their state and will decide his future in 2008 should he fail to resign.

"However, he also represents the Republican party, and I believe he should step down, as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator."

Craig serves on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, and Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests.

A statement from the Republican leadership said, "This is not a decision we take lightly, but we believe this is in the best interest of the Senate until this situation is resolved by the Ethics Committee."

On Tuesday the leadership called for an Ethics Committee investigation of Craig's June 11 arrest and August 8 guilty plea, which came to light in Monday's Roll Call newspaper.

On Wednesday a reporter from the Idaho Statesman defended the paper's coverage of Craig, responding to the senator's accusation that the publication conducted a "witch hunt."

"We have been careful, cautious throughout, courteous from the start," said Dan Popkey, the reporter. Popkey said he worked on the story for five months and conducted 300 interviews with people who know Craig, including some who went to college with him and some who work with him in the Senate.

The Statesman was compelled to publish the results of its investigation when news of Craig's guilty plea came out, Popkey said. Asked whether the paper has photographs, video or other evidence of Craig's alleged public homosexual activity, Popkey said, "We have no hard evidence."
