Can Mall Be Filled For an Inauguration? 4 Million May Try It.

District and federal officials are preparing for as many as 4 million people for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, a crowd that would be three or four times larger than previous big events on the Mall.

Only a fraction of those people will be close enough to get a good look at the action. But officials are planning extra JumboTrons at the Mall and along the inaugural parade route so that spectators can feel a part of the historic day.

"The Mall actually may be the best seat in the house. . . . It'll kind of be like the world's biggest stage and auditorium on January 20th," said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), adding that the crowd projections have emerged in briefings conducted by federal and local officials.

All plans are pending approval of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, to be set up by Obama, which determines the size and nature of the inaugural festivities, Fenty said. But District officials have met several times with the Secret Service and other agencies.

The Secret Service is taking the lead in overseeing security and other logistics. Even for a city that has hosted vast throngs for marches, protests, celebrations, funerals and inaugurations, this will be an unprecedented test of planning and resources. The question arises: Can the city handle it? Can millions of people fit downtown?

Or, could there be another Meltdown of '76?

Damn that's a lot of people. Ya'll please take plenty of pics and share with us that will not make the trip.

I will more than likely Metro in! Driving in D.C. is going to be unbearable.

I was telling my parents the same thing. I'm going to drive to one of the furthermost Metro train stations from D.C. Catching the Metro were it begins, pretty much guarantees you a seat on the train. The Metro train would probably be the best way to travel in D.C. during the inauguration.

I'm close to the New Carrolton and Largo Metro lines, so I will be taking one of those into D.C.

It's going to be cold...and Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles is going to be PACKED!!!

The atmosphere there is nice, because they have live music on certain nights and poety, etc, but I wasn't impressed with the food. Now there is 'Georgia Browns' in D.C. that has really good food. www.gbrowns.com The ambiance is nice also.

I'll be in Ashburn, VA, so I'll catch the train at the Vienna/Fairfax Station, which is the Orange Line. You'll be riding in on the Blue Line.

Do you all have tickets?

Not yet! You can't get them until the week before or the the week of. I've put in a request with our Senators but it doesn't guarantee I will get tickets. My family in Mississippi will more that likely get enough tickets for us. One of my cousins works for one of the Senators in Mississippi and she's trying to get us some tickets. I have about 12 family members driving up from the SIP for the Inauguration.

I probably drive up to Springfield and catch the metro from there.

If it's not much out of your way, you might want to catch the train at Glenmont, so you can guarantee yourself a seat. After the first few stops, the train will be so packed that I'm pretty sure that there wouldn't be much room for standing.

Not yet, but like Buckwheat1911, my younger sister pretty much has a guarantee connection.

Each office is only getting about 200 tickets so don't be surprised when your hook-ups are only able get 2 tickets max.

My family will be there in full force, I am on the green/yellow line in NW but have walked to the Mall a couple of times from my house and it's like a 25 min walk at best. So we will most likely walk and take in the sites along the way.
