STARKVILLE ? Darren Williams, a former star defensive back for Clarksdale High School and Mississippi State, was shot and killed early this morning in Atlanta.

Atlanta police spokesman Steve Coleman identified Williams, 23, of Clarksdale as the victim of a homicide in the 1000 block of Chivers Street.

MSU athletic department spokesman Mike Nemeth confirmed it is the same Williams who lettered at MSU from 2002 through 2004, and then transferred to Jacksonville (Ala.) State after being dismissed from the MSU team by coach Sylvester Croom for undisclosed violations of team rules.

Coleman said the investigation was being handled by the department?s homicide division and gave no further details. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a man wearing a ski mask got out of a white car and fired several shots, including one to Williams? head, and that robbery was an apparent motive.

Williams was a Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen selection and a Parade All-American out of Clarksdale.

So sad. Pray for his mom, his little brother, and his daughter. It's a damn shame because his little brother ridiculously IDOLIZED him, and his mom is fighting breast cancer. :shame: :shame:
