For JSU football coach Rick Comegy, death of wife a loss like no other

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Connie Comegy about two months after the family first made it to Jackson. It didn't take long to figure out, after being around Comegy's program for the past few years, that Connie was a big part of his life. She actually home-schooled their son, so he's also having to deal with being in public schools (Murrah) for the first time. It has to be a huge adjustment for everyone involved. I don't think we'll know until many days from now just how much this has impacted Comegy as a coach, but there is indeed a difference. He and Rick Jr. are in my prayers.

I met her during Comegy's first season... Didn't say much to her but I did feel a sense of "strength and love" when I shook her hand, hugged her and welcomed her to the JSU family.
I know Comegy is still hurting inside. I'm praying for him/his son/family/the team and the everyone who had a chance to meet ConnieComegy.
She will be missed dearly.

I can safely say, after reading this article, I can't imagine what Coach Comegy is going through, but...my father has been walking this walk since June of 2005 when my mother passed. When he said his wife could do anything, that's how moms was. A lot of similarities. I see it in his eyes that's its still fresh. And to add to it, he lost his only sister 2 weeks prior to moms passing.

Also had a cousin who lost his mother(my aunt) his Senior year in High school.

My prayers are with Coach Comegy and his family. Its hard to lose someone who means so much to your family and holds it all together. You often wonder where they get that much strength from and once they leave, you wonder what now?

Lots of praying folks prayed us through our losses...prayer, therapy and more prayer. 4 years ago still seems like yesterday.

Dude you do need to take a time out. Regardless of where Coach would be working, he would probably be receiving the same critisim (if not more) from the fans for the product that he is producing. First and foremost, this is his job. He could have stepped down and No one would have blamed him but he didn't. Everybody's job should have a bereavement policy and he choose to face the upcoming season. Nobody forced him to do this. So as for the fans of JSU, we have the right to be critical of the product that he showcases on Saturday nights. If it were your school and you didn't do the same that would be your choice.

As for the death of his wife and the mother of his child, that's a totally different side of the coin. My heart goes out to the man and his son. If he needed something in regards to the death of his wife and asked I am sure that he would get it. And I'm sure that is a resounding feeling with the JSU family. Bottom line is this, I lost my father in December '08. I still mourn and miss his presence. My job understands that but don't get it twisted. I am merely hired help and can be repaced should I not perform my duties. They would assist me if I asked for help but I still need to perform my duties. That is all that We ask of him, period. But I guess looking in from the outside you only see one side of the coin. Prayers up for all.

Great post.

My prayers goes out to Coach Comegy and his son! It takes a very strong person to keep all together with all that he has been through and it going through. The fans need to some sympathy and empathy in this situation! Heart breaking.

Wow.

Damn, I found out I lost my grandfather while we were on a road trip in the spring my senior year. Boy, that was tough to handle. I could not imagine having to coach a football team after losing my wife. Sunday, the NFL on CBS chronicled the Bengals D-Coordinator losing his wife Thursday. I guess coaches and athletes use the game to get away from it all for a minute.

But as for being critical, I have no problem with it as long as it does not get personal with the name calling. That is classless. I don't care if the team lost or not.

But hope the coach is OK.

Prayers up for the Comegy family. A kid who has been home schooled has to make many adjustments and if you add in the pressure from the kids teasing him, it can be devastating. I am sure the school system is aware of this behavior by now. Hopefully, Rick Sr. and Rick Jr. are receiving counseling. Again, prayers up for the Comegy family.

wow, reading that really breaks my heart. :( Especially that part where Rick Jr. is obviously being picked on at school because of the losses. :shame: May God continue to give him and his son the strength they need through this continued trying time.
I know!! Stupid kids of stupid parents... I thought her cancer was in remission.. I had no idea she passed this year. Man, this makes football so not important!! I think Jackson should stick by Coach Comegy... He revived the program... The least they can do is be loyal to him and not throw him to the dogs over one season... He is in my prayers... I hope Jackson starts winning...
