FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Lionel Tate was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for violating probation, the latest legal twist for the teenager convicted of murdering a 6-year-old girl in what his attorneys initially claimed was a pro wrestling move.

In the latest case, Tate had faced 10 to 30 years in prison on charges of violating his probation by having a gun and robbing a pizza delivery man last year.

The judge on Thursday let him withdraw his guilty plea in the May 2005 robbery but still sentenced him on the gun charge. The robbery trial is set for Sept. 18.

Even defense attorney H. Dohn Williams didn't understand why Tate would want to go to trial on the robbery charge, given that a conviction could bring a life sentence in addition to the 30 years for the probation violation.

Tate could have simply received 30 years total for both charges under the deal.

"He continues to get bad advice from meddling third parties," Williams said outside court.

Williams said Tate's mother, Florida Highway Patrol trooper Kathleen Grossett-Tate, has told him he could win an appeal on the probation violation conviction, win his robbery case and leave jail in a year. She left court without commenting.

Tate, now 19, was convicted of beating Tiffany Eunick to death in 1999, when he was 12.

His murder conviction was overturned by an appeals court in 2004 after the panel found it wasn't clear whether Tate understood the charges. He was freed from prison under a deal in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years' probation

I really hate to see this young man destroy his like this. I don't understand why he didn't sit his butt down once he was released from prison the first time. This is another brother gone to the system.

I just :smh: and said a silent prayer for this young man.
His life is pretty much over.

Me to Sonny. I was watching a special about a year ago and when he was sentenced at 12 he asked his attorney would he still be allowed to outside and play.

At 12 I had some sympathy for him. After getting a break and at 19, give him whatever. He is a chosen thug. Keep us save and keep him off the streets.
"God, help our young black men and keep us save from them."

I hate to see this too.

it's apparent to me this young man has a lot of issues. I don't know if he is mentally handicap as reported when he was 12 but he needs some real help and needs some male guidence. if not when he gets released in 18-30 years he'll commit yet another crime and be right back in the system. it is really sad to see and unfortunately not an isolated case.

You all need to think about something. He was placed in jail at 12 and also he is a slow learner so that placed him at about 8 mentally. Hence...the kid has not developed at all...this is a pure example of what jail can do to a kid.

So he was slow before all of this.

He may have needed to be put in a psych ward when he was younger.

He is surving no real purpose now.

Yup. He is not mentally retared but a slow learner; not autistic, I would have to ask my mother what it is called. Yet now, he's worse and as you have stated not serving any purpose.

I would think that even being slow as it has been put, someone would know the feeling between being locked up and being free. :smh:

But maybe I'm wrong....*shrugs shoulders*

And his mom is a state trooper....:smh:

Bout time they place this bad seed where he belongs. Locked up in the anals of the prison system.

Did his mom give him this advice because she thought that they would give him a lighter sentence because she is a trooper or something, it seems as if she is living in a fairy tell world or something, what are your thoughts, on her.
