FAMU Marching 100 to return to the Field

Personally they need to suspend all HBCU bands for a year. Maybe you self hazing, hurting your own black folks will see the light. The problem is black folks like drama, to see each other hurt and won. It is the slave gene passed down.

I'm not sure about the slave gene, but it's definitely the slave mentality.

How low do you have to be to think that it's necessary to be hazed to be part of a fugging band? How low do you have to be to willingly subject yourself to that?

As I said earlier, our people have to value themselves more. Have to value each other more.

I understand the need to be a part of something. I understand the need to feel important or even exclusive. The need to feel that you've accomplished something worthwhile. I'm sure Abraham Maslow would agree that these are common and fit into his hierarchy of human needs.

I also understand that the larger society denies these feelings to many African Americans. Too many, even those who go on to college, have an emptiness inside that needs to be filled. Therefore, they are willing to be subjected to and subject others to harsh forms of brutality. So that they can belong. Be proud. Have status and self-esteem.

When the truth of the matter is that they were never inferior in the first place. They've been equally worthy, capable and valuable all along.

We have to teach our kids that they are first class citizens. And don't have to be treated like second-class citizens in order to "become" first-class.

We're no longer slaves, people. You're not inferior. Act like it.

They had no choice but to bring the band back considering thats a big reason why people even go to their games.

Under the new rules, all band members must be full-time FAMU students. Before the band’s suspension, students from FAMU, Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College could be Marching 100 members as long as they were enrolled in a single band course. The semester Champion died, however, 101 people on the roster were not registered in the class.

Band members also will be required to maintain a 2.5 grade-point average, make adequate progress toward the timely completion of their degrees and pick a major by their third year. Membership in the band is now capped at four years. Additionally, practice hours will be limited in terms of time and location and will be supervised at all times by music department staff.

Robinson said the new standards will mean a “new normal” for the band. Gone are the days of its ranks swelling to up to 400 members.

“One of the things that is very unlikely is that we will see an ensemble of the size that we have seen before,” Robinson said. “You don’t need to be the biggest; you just have to be the best.”

Robinson said a smaller band also will be more manageable in terms of logistics and finances. Former FAMU interim President Castell Bryant, however, was widely criticized in 2006 when she limited band enrollment to only FAMU students and its size shrunk.

A university should not revolve around its band.

The 100 is very important to FAMU but I don't think the school ever revolved around the band.

Maybe they can also travel now that travel expenses won't be as high. If your band is too big to travel, it's too big.

LOL@ these rules. These rules should have been in place in the first place. :smh:

Hate to agree with TP, but these "new rules" are laughable. They should have been bare minimum standards 50 years ago. It's a shame that this is a higher standard for them.

It seems like when they did travel, such as the Presidential Inauguration Parade in 2009, a few folks from Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, and some probably not in school got a free trip to Washington D.C. on FAMU's behalf.

This has nothing to do with The BOOM. Let's stay on topic.

Look at you getting sensitive...for no damn reason I might add...all I asked was what were the rules for the Boom? Answer the question or ignore it...makes no difference to me bruh

Not this first time you all were in trouble for hazing BY FAR. Don't act brand new. There was/is a culture of hazing down there.

Save that "culture of hazing" bullsh*t...because every damn HBCU in the nation has had fraternities and sororities get in trouble for some form of hazing...so you don't act brand new

No need for me to get sensitive. My school's band is intact. Can't say the same about yours.

Definitely not BS. That was a huge reason why I (Along with others from my high school) chose to cross FAM off our lists. That garbage was evident and out in the open as if it were ok. Hell there was band hazing in the hotel HBOTB weekend in 2004

It's BS...as someone who graduated from FAMU, joined multiple organizations, and NEVER got hazed...it's pure uncut BS

The term, "cultrue of hazing" is stupid...the media made it seem like hazing was something that ran rampant across our campus, and it really didn't...and now you're seeing our administration react to EVERYTHING that is questionable...at the current moment, ANYTHING will get you in trouble on our campus

Let's see, you're one out of how many hundreds of folks associated with FAMU's band? Dude, someone died at your school due to hazing and you're on here debating hazing practices?

Actually you pretty can...because you just commented on a post stating that our band is intact...again, sensitive

Are you JSU people that dog gone dense...I asked what the Boom's rules of conduct were. Who added rumors on what anybody heard? Did you even read the post...or did you just jump on the butt hurt train with JayRob?

It was an innocent and legit question really?...A question that you can choose to ignore...really makes no difference.

I don't think that he is debating hazing practices. He's saying the same thing that I said years ago: hazing is something what we have choice to participate in. My experiences at JSU are similar in that I have never been hazed because I would not allow it.

Even when one does make the choice to participate in hazing, brutality is wrong, illegal, and dangerous.

Exactly...in no way was I trying to disrespect JSU
