What is your Family History of the HBCU that you currently attend or graduated from?

I will start mine off.

My daddy graduated from Southern. My mother graduated from Grambling. Three daughters which includes myself all graduated from Southern.(Imagine Bayou Classic Time). Neighborhood I grew up in, all of the street names were named after HBCU. Guess what street we lived on and my parents currently live on "Southern" My uncle (mother's brother) lived on "Grambling", and all of their friends that live there are Graduates of Southern. Great time growing up and having a lot of fun. Great college tradition from both colleges.

NONE. I'm the 1st to attend and/or graduate.
Good thread though.
Maybe my kids can reply years from now when I have some.
:D

Let's see..

Both grandparents (mom's side) are Alcorn State graduates..

Father- Alcorn State graduate

Aunt (mom's baby sister) - Alcorn State graduate

Brother - Southern graduate

2nd cousin...Jackson State graduate

I was the first person in my family since my maternal grandmother to go to a four year university full-time.

Thus, I am the first person in my family to have attended an HBCU (my grandmother earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Cuba).

Now, if you want, I can share the story of my College family with y'all (it is a great history!).

The institution that is now Bethune-Cookman College was founded in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune. All she had was five little girls, her young son, a $1.50, and faith in God. The only lad she could afford for her school was the old Daytona Beach City Dump. In other words, the land was not even good enough for Daytonans to put their garbage.

The students had no "school supplies" whatsoever. Their pencils were the burnt edges of branches and their writing tablets were discarded pieces of plywood.

To raise funds for what was then-called the Daytona Beach Normal Institute for Negro Girls, Mother Mary and the children sold sweet potato pies, sang spirituals, and actively yet humbly cultivated philanthropists as friends of the institution.

Because the Klan was a pervasive and powerful scourge throughout all of Florida during that era, Mary and her lifelong dream of missionary work through education were always in danger. On at least two separate occasions, the cowards in white robes rode into campus in a vain attempt to keep Mary from fulfilling her Divine Calling. The most infamous came on the eve of a municipal election in 1921.

Long before the Freedom Riders, Mary McLeod Bethune was working tirelessly to register Black voters as she knew the benefit of political empowerment to uplift an oppressed people. Her registration drive was so successful that city leaders in Daytona Beach deemed it necessary to put out the fire of freedom and dignity before it grew further.

The "American Taliban" cut off all of the power to that entire part of town and then rode in under the cover of darkness as all cowards do. The only light visible was from the torchlights glistening off of the shotgun barrels.

Mother Mary's students, being Black children in Florida at that most dangerous time, knew exactly what the hoods and torches meant. Terrified, they ran to Dr. Bethune's home.

She spoke to them with a serene yet confident calmness that reassured them as she said "Be not dismayed for this too shall pass."

She then turned to her "maintenance manager" and instructed him to turn on the lights of the campus on the cowards. *Mother Mary, being a "strong, independent Black woman" long before Jet magazine ever coined the phrase, already had her own power plant on campus.

The Klan left without further incident. The Black population of Daytona followed Dr. Bethune to the polls and changed the political landscape of Daytona Beach forever - in the early 1920's.

**Dr. Bethune was only twenty-nine when she founded BETHUNE-COOKMAN COLLEGE.

My Mom and Dad went to PVU and really didn't push the issue when it came time for me to choose schools until the last minute. I had to get out of L.A. and Texas was too close do to Family, so I choose the next closest and by far the best Southern U. My sister chose Hampton the same year.
