Through the ExxonMobil Foundation’s 2008 Educational Matching Gift Program, oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. and employees who donate money through the foundation have given $8.3 million in educational gift funds to dozens of Texas universities.

In all, Irving-based Exxon (NYSE: XOM) said 73 universities and colleges in the Lone Star State will receive money. Exxon Mobil’s gift fund to universities generally allows donors to pledge up to $7,500 per year to colleges or universities. Exxon matches the donations on a 3-to-1 basis, the company said.

“These donations are a remarkable testament to the value ExxonMobil employees place on higher education,†said Kenneth P. Cohen, vice president for public affairs and chairman, ExxonMobil Foundation. “We’re investing in the future, campus by campus, by providing these much needed dollars for colleges and universities to increase their level of excellence.â€

ExxonMobil’s philanthropic arm is focused on developing more math and science teachers, who can in turn educate more students to compete in subjects that will lead to careers as scientists and engineers.
