Euphoric JSU already laying groundwork for repeat in '08
The second Saturday in September seems so far away to Jackson State fans that it might as well have never happened. Winning a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship can do that to one's memory.
But coach Rick Comegy hasn't forgotten.
Four days after JSU beat Grambling State to win the SWAC title, Comegy called JSU's 16-13 loss to Tennessee State on Sept. 8 the turning point of the season.
"We were all carrying that cross," Comegy said. "We just got tired of crying."
The rest is written in the history books, where Jackson State now appears 16 times under the title "SWAC Champion" after a 10-year layoff.
After that loss to TSU saddled JSU with an 0-2 start, the Tigers started playing as a unit and won their next four games before losing to Grambling in a battle of conference unbeatens - a game that would be avenged with even more at stake in Birmingham, where JSU dominated for three of four quarters in the title game.
"It's like no other feeling when you say we want to be champs," Comegy said, "and then when it's all said and done, you are."
Rest of the Story
