Eli Manning to Chargers? Not if Archie has a say so!!

Isn't that what the union is for? Didn't the NFLPA agree on the principles of the draft? I guess that doesn't matter since it's his career. I guess he isn't going to join the union then.

I say play by the rules everyone else plays by. If everyone had a father with the kind of influence that Archie has then it would be cool. I guess he will determine when he wants to start, too.

Ah............ right.

And Archie didn't take this public. San Diago's GM did this after the NFL asked him to be at a meeting between the "3 parties" involved.

"When he want's to start's too ".............. :( ...... can't ya'll talk about anything without bringing all this "purist drama" into it.

I am sick and damn tired of hearing everybody talk about how much class Archie and the Mannings have, and that the people in San Diego squealed on them. I never cared for Elway and his father for this same reason. If Peyton can turn the Colts around then why can't Eli do the same with the Chargers. There are players every year who get drafted by teams they don't care for but they go there anyway. The FANS AND SEASON TICKET BUYERS have a right to know why the Chargers did or did not draft Eli. Why should Archie's reputation be protected. What Archie is doing makes me think of the klansman who never takes off his hood in public. I live in the Jacksonville area and the one thing anybody down here will tell you is that Tom Coughlin is a phucin idiot.

Don't know them, BUT, I know of them with all the U of Mississippi tie's and all. But all this klansman bullshat over a man and his son mapping out his future is funny.

I wonder how fast all of you would tell the public to go to hell if they stuck their nose in between your son and you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(Just thinking out loud.)

Most of the people on this board is too perfect to question anything.
:smug2:

Don't care what they do, I AIN'T GETTING A DIME OF BONUS MONEY.

Ya'll act like ya'll actually have a say in what he do. You think they care that you don't like them. Hell, that's just like them walking up and saying they don't like you. WOULD YOU GIVE A DAMM IF THEY DID? :what:

I'm kinda in a catch 22 with my opinion on this.

On one hand you have a hard time telling a Dad to stay out of his Son's future. How do you fault Archie for not being passive and actually doing something in the best interest of his child whom he loves. Also, we live in a society where freedom is paramount. None of us is foced to go work for company A in our given professions because company owns our rights. So it is feasable that Eli feels he has a write to choose where he is to be employed

BUT

On the other hand this is the NFL. The NFL has been established for many years. In that time thousands upon thousands of players have accepted their fate on draft day. I was listening to Dan Patrick Radio today and Phillip Rivers said it best. He said that an opportunity to play in the NFL is a blessing and he is simply greatful for the opportunity to go out and play a game he loves for millions of dollars. (Sounds like a humble respectable person to me) WHY in the HEL* should Eli Manning make-up his own rules? This is my analogy. None of us went on a job interview and said, I will come here and work only if you stop selling this and start selling that. Or I know your company is closed on Sunday's but you'll have to open now just for men because I will only work on Sundays. My Point.... True indeed the spirit of freedom suggest that Eli should be able to choose his employer. Well in my opinion he did. THE NFL ! And the NFL has rules in place just like any other place of employment. It's a pretty arrogant character to say he is soo good that he doesn't have to play by the rules.

I don't see what's the problem. Archie gave his son good advice and there are no rules against expressing your desire to play or not play for a team. As long as the Chargers get something outta the deal I think it's benificial for both parties.

Every year the top draft picks should say which teams they want to play for.
:smh:

this aint college.
Cosign. This ain't national signing day, where the athlete gets offers and decides where he wants to play. This is the NFL and its draft, where the worst teams are given the chance to get better by selecting the best players first. San Diego should do what's best for San Diego. Eli Manning can sit out the year and re-enter the 2005 NFL draft. And look like an ass in the process.

Elway pulled this move in '83 and got away with it when the Baltimore Colts traded him to Denver. Surprisingly, nobody else has tried, but if Eli gets over, expect others to try. This is a trend the NFL needs to nip in the bud right now.

Hell what is the difference in what the Mannings are doing versus what Kobe did. He basically said no to the Hornets and demanded to traded to the Lakers when draft time came. This aint new to sports. Danny Ainge did the same thing. While I do agree that this is selfish. I can understand Archie's concern. The Chargers front office is garbage and so is the coach. I bet you money that ole Commish Tagilibue wants the NY market to get Eli as well. The NFL has already threatened San Diego on getting a new stadium or he would not block a move to LA and SD will not host another Super Bowl in Jack Murphy. So there aint no sympathy for the Chargers. Actually Marty and the front office are idiots. They should have kept their mouths closed and drafted Eli. I am sure the SD fans wanted Eli. And if they don't get him they aint voting for a new stadium. Can you say LA Chargers. LOL. What a mess. Marty will get who he wants with Philip Rivers and Eli will end up in NY.

There is no difference between Eli, Kobe, and Elway. All three are EDIT, you need to watch your language on the sports board. There are kids reading this forum.

Two out of those three {edit} have rings. AJ should have kept his mouth shut and none of this mess would have been out in the open.

Two Options:
1. All Eli has to do now is let the Chargers draft him and don't sign the contract. He will go back into the draft pool next season.

2. Hope that the Giants and the Chargers work out a trade for him by the start of the draft.

SD is being really stubborn and the last couple of Quarterbacks have been garbage. The last decent QB they had was Louisiana native Stan Humphries and he took them to the Super Bowl 10 years ago. That was the last time the Chargers made the playoffs.

I don't see where the Chargers have done anything wrong. If Peyton ends up being a star everyone will want to know why the Chargers passed on him. Now everyone will know why Manning won't be a Charger. As I said earlier the Chargers have the right to tell their FANS AND SEASON TICKETS BUYERS the truth. All this proves is that Archie doesen't have as much class as we all though he had. I can remember the Colts were in the same situation when they drafted their current starting quarterback. You people from Pississippi and Looseaina need to wake up. If its a spade then thats what you need to call it.

You don't see the real deal. San Diego never wanted Eli. Marty wanted Rivers but knew if they just drafted Rivers first that the SD fans would be irate and veto building a new stadium, because all the SD fans wanted Eli before this media mess with the meeting conversation being made public by AJ Smith. SO what the SD management did was tell Manning and his Dad that they were not so sure about drafting him and that probably pissed Archie and Eli off and that led to all this debate in the first place. This was a set up all the way. I repeat Marty never wanted Eli. The only way they could get away with not picking him or trading the pick is to make the Mannings look bad. Archie caught on to it. Even Tagilubue acted funny about it when Berman asked him. He said it was some jockeying going on SD's part. So now Marty gets who he really wants without the public backlash of not keeping Eli. Because now the stupid SD fans think Eli is a villian. The real villian is Marty and AJ Smith who didn't have the balls(can I say that?) to just pick Rivers in the first place at the top of the draft and tell the fans that Rivers was better.

Suggestion..... Whenever someone says something "offensive on the board" why not edit their post and PM them the reason why their post was edited. Like I said, just a suggestion.

I don't buy that San Diego really wanted Phillip Rivers all along bit. They were just scared to deal with the guy they figured to be the best QB in the draft. Again, they shoulda done what's best for them. If Eli goes on to greatness and Phillip Rivers doesn't, they are gonna look really silly.

JR,

I never agreed with any instance where a team let a player hold them hostage to force a trade. You look out for self first. Damn that player. If that player is the player you need to get to the top, then his ass better learn to play for my team. I ain't giving up what I need to satisfy some young brat.

I don't really care anyway, I'm pissed that the Cowboys passed on Steven Jackson and Kevin Jones.

I don't want to beat a dead horse with this subject, but I guess I'm so naive that I think that maybe Eli going to San Diego was the way God wanted it to be. That's Eli's lot in life. You play the hand you are dealt. Whatever happened to being thankful and grateful? You make the most of your time there and do YOUR part as a player. If the organization is so bad and the situation is so sour, it WILL come to light. I'm not saying you have to suffer. I'm just saying that we are taught to be grateful for all that God gives us. When it gets too bad, then you get out. But don't run before you even have an opportunity to see what it would be like.

Trust me, if it was meant for him to be somewhere else, it would have happened without Archie manipulating the deal. Not every first round pick has fathers like Eli's or Elway's.

I can understand Archie not wanting 'his boy' to go through what he went through in N.O. But come on...he can't be 'babied' the rest of his life!

No, I didn't WANT to move to Indianapolis to work for the NCAA, but since that's where the office was located, that's where I went. I didn't think it would be a bad place, I just never thought it was going to be a great place. I wasn't going to whine about it. I was more concerned about what a good opportunity it was going to be and how it would be a boost to my professional career. If I wanted to work for them I had to make that choice.

How many of us are only living in our particular city because that?s where the job offer was? If it?s a deal you can?t refuse, you don?t turn it down. Us regular folks can't control whether or not our co-workers are idiots or whether or not our boss is a deranged psycho. All you can control is YOUR job performance. I know there's a difference in living in a city you don't want to be in and working for a company (organization) you don't like. I'm just making a point about the choices we have to make in life.

I don't wish bad on Eli, but I hope he doesn't think the NY is going to be a cakewalk and everything will be handed to him on a silver platter. He's a good player, but he ain't all that. There shouldn't be this much commotion made about it.

And if I hear them refer to the Mannings as footballs "First Family", I'm just going to scream!!

I would do whatever I think was best for my son and hopefully he will listen.

Whether that is sending him to a HBCU to play for a program and coach that I respect or whether that is doing whatever I have to do within the rules for him to play for a particular franchise and coach at the professional level in a given sport.

Again, I am going to do whatever I think is best for my family (Period) within the rules.

But, in this case the player still has is right to just not play. Just as much as the franchise as a much right to look out for their interest. So, does a player in my opinion have ever right to look out for their best interest.

The San Diego Chargers had the opportunity to pick him because they may have thought he was the best player. But, at the end of the day. There isn't anything they could have done to prevent Eli Manning from holding out the entire year and going right back into the draft in 2005.

As the general manager of San Diego Chargers, understanding the conversation that he had with Manning's father. Do you believe it makes sense to take that risk, while you have what many have stated is a farely equal quarterback in talent, Rivers?

A)Draft Manning #1, keep him and stick to your guns and hope he plays and plays well as a MVP level QB over the next 5 years or so.

B)Draft Manning #1, keep him and stick to your guns and hope he does not sit out a year and waste a draft pick.

C)Draft Manning #1, trade him for Rivers with additional draft picks and hope he plays and plays well as a MVP level QB over the next 5 years or so as well as the #1 pick you get in 2005 playing as an All-Pro.

Personally, as a GM. I would not take that risk. Especially, when you consider are the various scenarios.

Jafus,

I woulda forced that boy's hand. If he sat out, as is his right, then I would trade him after the season.

Robber,

Jafus,

I agree you could have forced his hand. But a trade takes at least two franchises. What franchise would trade for a guy that just showed he would stick to his gun about seating out a full season (and even if they did they would not give up much because they would not have too. They would hold the cards)?

It should also be noted that San Diego Chargers surely would not have gotten in a trade at the end of the season anything near the compensation that they received by trading Manning up front during this past draft.

Again, I agree at the end of the day it is about the GM doing what is best for your team with-in rules considering all the factors.

Think about that in the context of being San Diago's owner.

You would make the son of a MULTI-MILLIONARE, whose older brother is a MULTI-MILLIONARE LAWYER, and his other brother is a MULTI-MILLIONARE QB in the NFL sit out.

Who would be hurting in this deal? The Chargers would have wasted a pick, and Eli would have thumbed his nose at them next year anyway.

This way, they got their QB, 2 extra picks this draft, and 2 extra picks next year. In a business like the NFL, stubborn emotions will kill a franchise.

JState83,

Exactly!!

In the context of this particular case. I think it is just a little different than the normal disenfranchised athlete. I must admit I understand Robber, concerns. But, in this particular case, I think San Diego Chargers did themselves, well.

Remember the Texans held onto Drew Henson and traded him 10 months after drafting him in the 2003 draft. He kept saying that he was still going to play baseball, they took a chance and it paid off for them.

Somebody would have been in need of a QB next season, and they would definitely part with a 1st round pick to get Eli. Keeping Eli would not have been wasting a pick, because it would have paid off in the end. But I would have had to see just how strong that kid's convictions were. And that's if he was the QB I felt we needed to get back to the top. If I didn't, then I wouldn't be so steadfast on keeping him.

And San Diego did get over. The Giants are stupid.

San Diago has been losing so long, the owner could not afford to sit him out a year. He has a business to run and season ticket's to sell.

Getting a QB and 2 extra picks this year is what they needed. As far as Eli's convictions, big brothers would have made his "year off" very comfortable. He stayed in school because money ain't a factor to this family. :swink:

Flip side ................. THE GIANT'S WAS STUPID FOR GIVING UP ALL THAT. ;)

Fiyah,

Remember the Texans held onto Drew Henson and traded him 10 months after drafting him in the 2003 draft. He kept saying that he was still going to play baseball, they took a chance and it paid off for them.

Yes, I remember that. They thought that they would be able to get a first round pick too. But, once everything got closer to the dealine. The Houston Texans had less option. Because at the end of the day. Drew Henson had to basically agree to trade and be able to be signed by the team that the Texans traded him to or he would have taken his chances by going right back in the draft. That is why at the end of the day that the Houston Texans took a third round pick and moved forward.

Robber,

So, what is the difference than taking a a first round pick next year along with several other draft picks as well as getting a first round pick in quarterback Rivers this year, than that just getting a first round pick that may or may not have been a top five pick next year. I think it is better to know what you where getting in your first round pick this season in Rivers and taking a chance on the pick that you may get next season that taking a chance on your first round pick not playing at all this season and what ever first round pick you may negotiate next season. Again, if they would have waiting all season. They would have lost a great deal of their leverage next season, similar to the Texans, because of franchise would have known that San Diego was up against a clock due date and would finally want to get something rather than nothing out of the deal by letting Manning go back in the draft.

I agree in my opinion the New York Giants gave up a great deal to land their "prize" position. Only time will let us know if that was a wise decision.
