D.C., N.Y. areas evacuate as quake felt across East

WASHINGTON — Thousands of people evacuated buildings across Washington, D.C., and New York City on Tuesday after a moderate earthquake in Virginia that was also felt as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. No tsunami warning was issued for the East Coast.

Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated.

At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government's biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of "Evacuate! Evacuate!"

Centered some 90 miles from the nation's capital, the quake was a magnitude 5.9, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At the U.S. Capitol, light fixtures swung and the building shook for about 15 seconds while the tremor hit, NBC News reported.

At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. All flights were put on hold.

In New York City, NBC reported debris fell from the attorney general's office, causing a brief panic as people ran from the area.

She said that they felt it in Virginia and everyone ran out of her building.

Earthquake on the East Coast

I hope everyone is ok. I felt it in my office and I was scared shitless...

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck near Washington, D.C., the U.S.Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was in Mineral, Virginia. Did you feel it? Send CNN an iReport.

The quake was felt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York City and on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where President Barack Obama is vacationing. Cell phone service has been disrupted in New York City part of which has been evacuated.

Traders in the New York Stock Exchange felt the shaking and shouted to each other, "Keep trading!" CNN's business correspondent Alison Kosick reported from the floor at 2:20 p.m. E.T.

Aftershocks continue in Colorado after Mondays quake.
DENVER — The strongest earthquake to strike Colorado in more than 40 years shook awake hundreds of people, toppled groceries off shelves and caused minor damage to homes in the southern part of the state and in northern New Mexico. No injuries were reported as aftershocks continued Tuesday.

"Here we go again, there's another one starting. We got to get out of here," said Garry Ringo, owner of Ringo's Super Trading Post in the small town of Segundo, Colo., as bottles on shelves rattled in the background during an interview with The Associated Press.

A shiver from Virginia quake felt in Montgomery's RSA Tower? Workers say yes

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Tremors from the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that shook the east coast this afternoon were also felt by people working in the Retirement Systems of Alabama tower in downtown Montgomery.

The quake, centered in Virginia, occurred around 12:51 p.m. today and spurred many tremors felt from Alabama to Pennsylvania.

While initial information indicates that the Montgomery area was not affected by the tremors, many people on the upper floors of the 22-story building are reporting that they felt a five- to 10-second jolt a little after first reports of the larger quake.

Vanessa Williams, who works for the Alabama Department of Public Health on the 15th floor, said that she was unaware of the Virginia quake when the felt the building shake.

"I thought, this is weird. It seemed like the building was swaying," said Mitchell. "I called my supervisor who works on the same floor, and she said she felt it too and that blinds shook in the office."

Mitchell's co-worker who sits nearby, however, said she did not feel anything.

Across the hall, ADPH receptionist Christine Turner, said that she too felt the rumble.

"At first I thought I had too much caffeine today because I was shaking. Turns out that it was the building, not me," she said. "With the news about the Virginia quake and then the Colorado quake earlier this week, I put two and two together and figured that's what it was."

Similar descriptions were reported from the 10th to 22nd floor. Building management said that they have not received any reports of damage or injuries.

Other reports from Alabama, the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and Tennessee and Alabama. In the state's away from the Virginia epicenter, the shake was on a scale of light to none.

I was on my way home after going to the MLK memorial and was at a stop light. My car began to shake and bound like a rodeo bull. I thought something was going on with the engine. It stopped and I continue on my way home. Then I saw all these people standing outside of buildings and realized that I had experienced an earthquake.

I was sitting at my desk and it started shaking. I looked around the office at my co-workers and they had this frightened look on their faces. I looked up at the ceiling and noticed that is moving. I grabbed my keys and cell phone and ran out of the building like a runaway slave :-). I wasn't taking any chances.

All this over a little 5.3 shaking?
I know it was a shock, but some of the comments comming in on these news chat boards are funny. People acting like they scared to death. Come down here and dodge these damm EF4 and EF5 tornados and then get back to me about FEAR. lol

BTW East Coasters:

YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO RUN INTO THE STREETS DURING A EARTHQUAKE.
EVER HEARD OF FALLING DEBRIS-----BRICKS, WINDOW PANES, ETC?

Man, we are not used to quakes around here. You can keep those tornados also. We are used to snow and that's it.

Living or working in Lower Manhattan or Washington, D.C. during a earthquake would be scary for anyone. The buildings aren't designed to handle jolts of any kind. Plus you have a subway system with multiple layers underneath. The aftermath of an 8+ earthquake in this region would be much worse than the one in Japan earlier this year. Millions will be homeless

No comparison since you have some type of warning a EF4 or EF5 tornado is in the area. We had no freaking warning a damn Earthquake was about to hit. My coworkers and I got the hell out of dodge. Cats were looking scared as hell.

Shat............Bout 1 minute of warning.
That mofo that hit Clinton and Jackson came in with no warning. I went into the post office on Northview when the siren started and when I came out 1 minute later, that sucka was comming str8 across my neighborhood North jackson. That thing took all of 1 minute to go from Clinton to Ridgeland. Once you see it, ain't nowhere to run so what you gonna do? :noidea:

You don't know where those things will drop even with a warning.

Most of had no idea what to do during an earthquake. I grew up with tornadoes - I knew what to do, but this was a new experience for me. It turned out I did the right thing.
