Bat invasion at TSU dorms causes health scare By Mark Garay(9/17/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) -

Dozens of Texas Southern University students are anxiously awaiting a meeting with health officials today. They want to know if they need to get rabies shots after bats invaded their dorms.

This, after a bat infestation forced them from their dorm rooms. Depending on what they find, those students may have to receive treatment.

This latest infestation reportedly began last week. There have been complaints about bats at Lanier Hall for a couple of years now. One student recorded the video of students dealing with the bats, which have become a huge nuisance on the second floor.

At least 211 people had to pack up last week, and have been relocated to nearby hotels temporarily. Meantime, university officials have hired pest control experts to eradicate the problem.

"We're hoping this will be a short term move, but we want to make sure the building is cleared of all the bats before we move the students back in," said TSU's spokesperson Kimberly Williams.

Some students say they've seen bats in the dorm since last school year. TSU has a 30 day contract with those hotels where the students have been moved. But there's no word on how long it will take to rid Lanier Hall of the bats.

Re: INVASION OF THE BATS..........

This is a bigger problem than you guys think. Rabies are their least worries. Bat Poo when it dries can be inhaled causing major nuerological problems. I saw a speciall where a lady purchased a nice house and the attic was full of bats. They to 100 50 gallon buckets of the stuff out of her attic. She was lucky her roof didn't collaspe. she is almost blind from it now. Oh yeah it causes blindeness too.

Re: INVASION OF THE BATS..........

Here is the real deal.

He have an abandon building slated for demo. This building has been empty for 3 years and a huge colony of bats have set up shop in there. The dorm is right next to the building across the street.

We had a pest control company come out to take care of the bats. But some was trip in the building.

Damn knucca heads start moving ceiling tiles and other **** to let the bats loose which cause what you see in the video. They should have call the police department instead.

Re: INVASION OF THE BATS..........

Maybe its me but they have had a h3ll of alot of bat problems in this part of Texas for the past couple of years. It seemed like for a while there was a new high school with a bat problem almost every week.

And I had no clue about bat poop....that is crazy.

Re: INVASION OF THE BATS..........

Dear TSU Community,

On September 11, 2007, reports were made of bats in the Lanier Hall East dormitory. The university?s extermination company was immediately notified, arrived on campus to evaluate the situation, and began abatement measures, including a 24-hour presence by the extermination company at Lanier East. When it became apparent that more time was needed to fully abate the bats, the administration determined that to ensure the health and safety of students residing in the dorm, all 211 residents were relocated. Alternative housing was identified at the Springhill Suites Marriott and Reliant Park Inn and Suites. Both hotels are in close proximity to campus and provide a comfortable living and learning environment while Lanier Hall East is being abated. Daily shuttle service will be provided between the hotels and campus. The University Housing Office and Campus Safety will maintain a 24 hour a day presence at both locations. A building abatement program may take from 2-4 weeks.

We have been informed by our extermination company that bats maintain a regular presence in the Houston area and as migratory animals they move from location to location. A standard bat abatement program involves using a repellent that works as an irritant to bats to discourage them from entering into the building. Possible entry points are also being identified and sealed. We ask for your patience as we work to address this issue.

The city of Houston Health Department will visit with Lanier Hall East residents to discuss any questions or concerns. At this time, Lanier Hall East is the only campus building affected; however, the University is taking preventive steps at Lanier Hall West, the female dormitory, to prevent bat infestation at that location. Please know that the university is taking every precaution to ensure the health and welfare of students, faculty and staff. We will keep you updated as the situation develops.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of External Relations & Marketing if you have additional questions. Students or parents of Lanier Hall East residents may contact the Office of Student Services at 713-313-7104.

Re: INVASION OF THE BATS..........

Anybody see the actual video on YouTube? Them fools was cussiin up a storm. That's why most stories run the video with no sound. They was swattin them with tennis rackets and shat. He got 1 of em though....

For folk in Texas I don't think the video would be seen as a source of shame being that bats have been all over the place lately. But on a national level (CNN) I could see how this might look bad.

I have no problems with the bats, but I saw the unedited version on youtube with all of the "n-bombs" being dropped :smh:. And then, with this being at TSU alot of people are already running off at the mouth getting their digs in. I read some of those comments on the chronicle site and on youtube. Anything remotely perceived as a negative will get magnified when it comes to HBCUs.

Ya'll, I am over here dying at this shat!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
