Do You Associate Music With Life Events?

Maybe it's because i'm really and truely an artist at heart, although i didn't go into music as a profession and i think my family/genes are naturally artistic, but the main reason I like much/most of the music i do is because i associate my favorite music with certain periods in my life, like major changes.

For example, "(she keeps on) Passing Me By" by Pharcyde, i heard this track for the first time on an L.A. radio station in my rental car driving from LAX to Pasadena and every since I associate that track (and Pharcyde in general) with my time spent So Cal. Do you have music that you associate with certain events/times of your life?

Hmmm,.....
I can do this without being long winded.
Early childhood when family was beautiful and innocent:
Jackson 5
Aretha Franklin
Al Green / Jackie Wilson / Otis Redding / Marvin Gaye / Barry White
B.B.King
James Brown

1980's High School Days
Luther Vandross
First true Love :whatever: Debarge /Stevie Wonder
Prince / The Time

Mid 80's College:
I was in love every other week
Whitney Houston/ Sade /Anita Baker / Melisa Morgan /Luther /Freddie Jackson/ Midnight Star / Atlantic Star / Starpoint

In 1986 I had a friend who introduced me to the string bass sounds of Sam Cook.
This guy changed to course of my taste in music forever!!!!!!

Hangin' with the crew:

Bob Marley / Zapp /Steel Pulse /Phil Collins

The 90's I finally found someone who could hang with me but, was still out of reach.
Mary J. Blidge/ Toni Braxton /Oleta Adams /Patsy Cline / Shania Twain /Judy Garland/ Frank McComb / B.B. King / Bobby Blue Bland / Aretha Franklin /Natalie Cole

2000's Integrity vs Dispair:
Millie Jackson :eek: :caution: I ran my car @ 80 mph into a tree because I was listening to her and tried to rewind the line I missed.
Frank Sinatra /Nina Simone /Ella Fitzgerald /Billie Holiday / John Legend /Coltrane/Bird/ Gerald Albright/ Harry Connick Jr./ Micheal Bubble' /Ray Charles / Donny Hathaway /Barbara Striesand ...

I don't listen to the radio today.

Yes, I associate music with a lot of events that go on in my life.

Let me see how far back can I go.

1984 "Isn't She Lovely" Stevie Wonder" :D
when I was crowned Mis AJB Elem

1985 "Control" Janet Jackson
Performed with a dance group in front of thousands of people at half time of the GSU vs. SU basketball game. We were so nervous til the crowd started pumping us up. Lil 8 year olds doing the push the button dance.....:shame:

1985 Computer Love-Rodger & Zapp
when I had my first crush on a boy while sitting on the steps watching my uncle teach the boys how to clean up a ride while he was blasting this song

1987 or 88 "Sunshine" Alexander O'Neal "Angel" Angela Winbush
the first two songs I slow danced to with a guy :blush:

1988 "Don't Disturb this Groove" The System
Spring Fest-for some reason this song was played a lot during this time and it reminds me of Springfest because this was a time when me and some friends snuck out the house to go on campus to the carnival held during Spring Fest :jump:

1990 "The Ghetto" Too Short
When one of my classmates brother would drive his lil gray hatchback Sprint around Gram with base pumping out for all to hear a mile away before he actually appeared.

1991 "When will I see you smile again" BBD
When my boyfriend would piss me off he would call and hold the phone while playing this song to try to get me to forgive him. :splat:

1992 "Ready or Not" After 7
when I decided to be adventurous and do the grown up :blush:

1992 All the songs by Jodeci
Lots of high school moments

1993 "Marrero" MC Thicke
While watching tv 1 daily in class there was a countdown before the news came on and just as there was a count down in this song, we could get crunk and yell out the lyrics to this song and make our teacher mad daily. :shame:

1993 "Humpty Dance"-Humpty
This song will always bring back memories as we were up dancing during class as our teacher stepped out for a few min....us not knowing she was in the observation booth with the principal. They flipped on the lights and we all were up dancing and froze in mid air :uhoh: Got detention for that a week for that one. :shame:

1994 Pop that p___ "Luke"
Parties at the Renaissance :eek:

I'll be back to post more

aaaaaagh MAN!!! see DAS what i'm talkin' bought! man yall making my eyes water! see that's what i'm talkin' bought, i'm not the only one!

man,,WHAT?!:

Aurra(sp) - "Why Don't You Make Up Your Mind", early 80s
High school band trip, first girlfriend, just beginning to get exposed to life beyond my high school.

Nine - "Ova Confident", 93-94
After graduating from North Carolina A&T State University, I took a job in southern california, but i was STILL into the east coast/MEAC rap/HH music set. This CLASSIC by Nine tied everything together for me; it had the HH-Reaggea I was introduced to at NCA&T, it was east coast which was the predominant influence of the music at the time (Black Sheep, Smith & Wesson, KRS-One, etc), yet Nine gives shouts to the west coast and the up and comming "dirty south".

TCQ - "Award Tour", mid 90s?
This was trying to adjust to life in southern Cali where "gangsta rap" ruled at the time (Ice Cube and some others were all good, don't get me wrong) and my A&T/east coast preference was not the most popular. I used to listen to my own TCQ et al EC mixed tapes while driving to some clubs in So Cal that were just off the fncking chain,, but was having no parts of the east coast rap/hh as the main party starting tracks. the crowds would not totally get wild until the Ice Cube/Mack 10/Snoop dog/Dr Dre/Kausion type stuff was palyed.

Nevertheless being the music FANATIC and former band hack (5 years, Tuskegee Marching Crimson Pipers) that I am, I could easily adapt to it all!

I'd have to sit down with myself and come up with a timeline...I love music...different songs bring back special memories....Like ALL Bounce Music brings back freshman year at SU...BoyzIIMen/Jagged Edge/Next...high school...Aaliyah...man Age Ain't Nothin but a Number/R and PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT...Hey Mr. DJ...Wow...memories...

Certain songs make me think of certain people...I now can't hear Get Ready or Golden Time of Day without thinking of my best friend who marches for the Boom.

Just good stuff...Maze ft. Frankie Beverly Summers in BR

I did a similiar topic about 4 years ago. :lol: This was my response then and it still stands:

1987: "Push It"- reminds me of my freshman year in high school when I asked my mom if I can get my hair cut like Salt-N-Pepa and she said "Hell no!!!" :lol:

1988: ?Make It Last Forever? (Keith Sweat)- reminds me of my first slow dance with my high school sweetheart.

1989: ?All I do is Think of You? (Troop)- reminds me of another high school sweetheart that use to sing that song to me.

1990: ?Humpty Dance? (Digital Underground)- reminds me of my junior prom when all the guys had on top hats and canes and they started stepping when this song came on.

1991: "Crack Cocaine" (Kilo)- reminds me of when Kilo came to Columbus and performed this song, and me and my cousin almost got into a fight with this gul cause she pushed my cousin on the floor trying to catch a dayum poster. :mad:

1992: ?Remember the Time? (Michael Jackson)- reminds me of when we drilled off this song at the Circle City Classic in 92

1993: "Do It Baby, Stick It Baby"- reminds me of infamous Sigma party when the floor caved in (dat sh*t was packed!) and this song was on at the time.

1993: "Jump Around" (House of Pain)- reminds me of my very first probate show with LIT (Ladies Interested in Tau Beta Sigma).

1994: "Whoot! There It is" (95 South)- reminds me of Freak-Nik 94......lawd!!! :eek:

1995: "I Got 5 On it" -reminds me of........never mind! :cool: That was also our dance rountine in the band.

1992-95: Any booty song by Luke- reminds me of every Thursday night at Club NXS, my azz could be seen on da floor for about 4 hours straight!! :lol:

Thats all I can think of right now.

Hmmm let's see...

Down Home Blues, Don't Mess With My Toot Toot, CandyLicker and just about all blues songs remind me of being a little girl back in Montgomery. I spent a lot of time at my grandmother's house in the afternoons and on the weekends. On Fridays there were always fish frys and plenty of liquor. I learned how to be "cute" and always walked away with money for being a good little waitress.

Keith Sweat, Karyn White, Surface, and all of them remind me of when I 1st moved to Ohio.

Bobby Brown Rock With Ya - 1st slow dance with this mannish boy in the neighborhood at the pool hall.

EU Da Butt - that was a fun summer

R, Kelly Born into the 90s - that whole CD reminds me of my summer at Ohio State in 6th grade. It was a program I was in where we got to feel like college students. I met my 1st crush there.

Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD - I was in a dance group and we used a lot of their music lol.

Dr. Dre Chronic album - reminds me of my 1st love. I knew nothing about rap but he told me to buy the cd and I did. I still have the cd and it's actually one of my favorites.

Shai If I Ever Fall In Love - musical theater days, we used to warm up with that song.

Mary J Blige You Remind Me - I was in jr high and wanted my mom to get me a leather jacket so I could rock the jacket, the boots, and the short skirts. She wasn't hearing it.

Pretty Brown Eyes, Slow Wine, and Xscape Just Kickin It - freshman yr of high school. They were always in the top 10 songs in our school.

Boyz II Men Doing Just Fine - college and getting over someone.

Jay-Z Hard Knock Life - Ahhh such a great Spring Break. Actually I associate a lot of my life with Jay-Z cds.

Sade - my 1st time

Freddie Jackson You Are My Lady - always brings one person to mind. He used to sing it all the time.

Lizz Wright Fire - rough times with someone

Corinne Bailey Rae Like A Star - rght now

that's all I feel like typing

2000's Integrity vs Dispair:
Millie Jackson :eek: :caution: I ran my car @ 80 mph into a tree because I was listening to her and tried to rewind the line I missed.
Frank Sinatra /Nina Simone /Ella Fitzgerald /Billie Holiday / John Legend /Coltrane/Bird/ Gerald Albright/ Harry Connick Jr./ Micheal Bubble' /Ray Charles / Donny Hathaway /Barbara Striesand ...

I don't listen to the radio today.

I've met Millie before and went to her house in ATL. She's very nice and crazy as hell.

Donnell Jones-Everything on the first cd. Just reminds me of when I lived in Colorado Springs. I bumped this cd daily.

Sexy Dancer-Prince I was a little boy and heard this man breathing on the record. I first discovered Prince

How Deep Is Your Love-Keith Sweat The ultimate slow jam in the club Fall 88. Possibly the best semester of my life. College memories

She is something else. I will always remember my mother playing, "Lying In Your Loving Arms" every Christmas eve. :lmao: It be like clock work every year. She put that song on and come tell us kids that if she and my dad was still together today,...they would have been married for x amount of years. Then she would go into her room, close the door and you wouldn't see her for the rest of that day. I thought it was funny at the time but now,....I truly understand momma because I'm playing the same songs. My mother warned me to be careful with her music. She just tells it like it is with a bad band to back her up!!! Her music is soooo seriously realistic that my parents nor I can sit down and just listen to her without gettin' emotionally sick. We always end up thinking about something from our yester years we should 've moved on from.
I love her music though. She's in my personal stock that I don't lend out.

  • "Brick House" - Commodores; "Fire" - Ohio Players: doin' the bump at house parties with "Horizons Unlimited", a group my mom formed with graduates of Fortier H.S. in New Orleans in the late 70s;
  • "I Want Her" - Keith Sweat: early H.S. years;
  • "Candy" - Cameo: Senior H.S. year;
  • "We Got Our Own Thing" - Heavy D & The Boys; "Treat 'Em Right" - Chubb Rock: college years; Chubb Rock came to XULA one year to perform for the SpringFest;
  • "Crossroads" - Bone Thugs & Harmony: summer trips to Chicago in the late 90s;
  • "Stay With Me" - Notorious B.I.G.: house / card parties in the late 90s;
  • "Still Not A Player" - Big Pun: trip to Dallas to kick it with one of my homeys in the early 00s;
  • "Silent Night" - Temptations; "This Christmas" - Donny Hathaway: all the Christmas spent with family in New Orleans;

Man. I think this is the reason why I only listen to nothing BUT old school music exclusively now. :)

Anything like Johnny Taylor's old stuff, BB King, Bobby Bland, Otis Redding, et al blues like singers reminds me of those times I had to stock and restock my uncles cafe' (juke-joint). I spent a lot of time around that place. :)

Very specific songs that I hear which instantly trigger a memory are:

Brick's "Sweat Til' You Get Wet" - my VERY first public dance w/ a gul. lol

Anything by Debarge, Confunkshun, Parliament, Zapp, : HS basketball games/football games-track meets and tennis matches cooped up on a bus.
Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" - after every single football game, the HS band played this. lol
Deniece William's "Lets Hear It For The Boy" - my HS graduation 1984
Anything Prince's "Purple Rain" - First yr PV
Whodini's "5 Mins of Funk" - First yr @ PV
Prince's "Erotic City" - Second yr @ PV
Anything RUN DMC/Fat Boys/Jacko's "BAD" album - PV years

Anything GO-GO/Soul II Soul/...-Howard years

A grand ol' 14 thank ya' kindly. The summer of 1980 if memory serves correct. :)

Don't trip. U wuz dancing to that song too!

You sure it wasn't the summer of 1981?

I danced in front of a crowd of over 40,000 to that song... my freshman year in The Boom......:swink:
