You're exactly right TSU got the ball the first half. The officiating crew here is terrible and JSU's coaches are no better for letting this happen.
With all of that said - SWAC officials are the worstest. At the Bama St/TxSU game I dont know what they were seeing but there were some "WTF" calls made.

That's a good question. I thought the SWAC Commissioner, made it mandatory for all officals to attend some type of training camp. I have said for years, SWAC officals are the most pitiful in college football. I am still wondering how they called two incomplete passes complete for JSU.

You need to shut your mouth.

Not kicking off to start a half is a perfectly normal strategy. If you think that you can gain more momentum by having your defense take the field rather than your offense, then you ought to do it.
If the tosses and the decisions fall right, it is conceivable that a team could go the entire season without receiving a kick to start a half IN NCAA FOOTBALL.
With that said, it is certainly not a common practice.

As bad as I would like to blame the coach it appears as though it was not the coach this time. I saw the coaches getting all over the players when they found out what happened. It looks like they need to practice the coin toss this week.
The officials call on what looked like a late hit was a good call. The JSU players feet were still in bounds when the TSU player hit him. It looked like a bad call because he was falling out of bounds when he was hit.
