DELTA STATE IS FOR REAL

Because being scurred to play a team like Delta State that CAN whip your arse put's us, AND THE CONFERENCE, in the position it is in now.

That position is .................. We can't beat anyone but ourselves.
If we, the SWAC, play 10 out of conference games on the same weekend, I'll bet 6 or 7 of us would lose.

If we scurred to put a D2 team on the schedule no matter who they are, then we just threw in the towel against the rest of 1-AA.

If we can't handle Delta State and NCCU, don't even breath a name like APPY St., Montana, or Youngstown St.
In fact, if you scurred of playing a top D2 school, then you may as well drop back to D3 and quit wasting money.

My point is we need to start playing I-AA teams outside of the SWAC first. If you want to play strong teams start with teams in our division instead of dropping down to D2.

If I am not mistaken........It was Delta State who pulled out the "Home and Home" deal with Valley. I beleive it came after Valley beat them pretty bad one year...
There was always pretty good attendance on this game. I think I saw on their (DSU) website where their second highest attendance game ever was against Valley.

Oh yeah.......Check out their website and look at their facilities.......(Indoor baseball practice facility and their football fieldhouse/Weights indoor turf...etc.

Man, Delta State is a 1-AA powerhouse hiding in D2 clothes.

And have been for years.

Ms. College was also back when they won the Nation Championship with Fred McAfee.
They dropped to D3 years ago and are now talking bout moving back to the Gulf South Conference in D2 like they was before.
Why did they drop anyway......................Ain't like they was not kicking people arses too.

Delta State is 3-1 against Valley.
They blew Valley out in the last game of the series 45-0 in 2003.

Don't know why they quit playing each other.
This was a natural fit.
The 2 schools are basically "across the street" from each other in this region.

I think MC dropped out because of finances and facilities. They could not compete and it was costing them to much to fund athlectics on that level. Do they even issue Scholarships to DIII recruits. I think they all play for the love of the game.

D2 has 33 schollies.
D3 has none........................Belhaven, Millsaps, and for now Ms. College.

Delta State is Mississippi's lone D2 rep unless Ms. College is for real about moving back up.
Facilities should not be a problem with all the money Bernie Ebbers gave them in the 90's when WorldCom moved to Clinton.

The land that the Old WorldCom headquarters sit on was owned by Ms. College.
Bernie swapped them land on the Ms. College side of I-220 for the land that WorldCom sit's on now.
He also gave them a shat load of cash..............MILLIONS upon MILLIONS.
Not only should Ms. College be able to field a competitive D2 team, their facilities would be A1 if they do.

I would like to know who is in favor of Delta State joining the SWAC. We should have a poll on this and let me be the first to say they have my vote and we should court Delta State into the conference. At least we can now have a team that will go far in the playoffs and win a national championship. Delta State will represent the conference well.

If Delta State wanted to move up to 1-AA, the SWAC would be foolish if they didn't go after them like their lives depended on it.

I could see them either joining the SWAC or the OVC if they wanted to move up.
The SWAC would be best if we as a conference raised our game.

I would vote YES.

With them joining the SWAC, I can see all of our teams getting better for the simple fact that they would be coming in busting our heads to the white meat in just about everything. Have any of you followed them outside of football; they got a real athletic department. Would be good for the SWAC!!

1. Scott Eyster is a Hammond High grad. They told me he used to slang it for the Tors when he was there. I knew he was up for the Harlon Hill trophy last year.

2. I agree, Delta State would be a good addition for the SWAC...esp. football wise. hell..might as well get North Alabama in there too. I'll put money on North Alabama whuppin Bama Souf and North.

I've heard Delta State is pretty much solid all around. However, if Delta State would move up..it's out of the SWAC and the Southland for conference affiliation.

Ill bet you UNA would kick the ish out of Southern also.

It's a sad state of affairs when I read countless posts on how Delta State would kick our ass, and I can't even disagree. I'd definitely be down with a game against Delta State in Jackson.

And if y'all think the football program is good, they ain't got nothing on that baseball program.

that's gotta be one of the most juvenile responses to a post i've ever seen...

but let me entertain your nothion..

Yes UNA would kick this year's SU team to sleep, along with some of our other poorer teams we put on the field. but they would for damn sure kick y'alls too...hell put Delta State in the West and UNA in the east...then they'll probably be in the SCG...

Like Robber said....all these posts do indicate a said state of affairs in the conference....

Man those girls basketball teams have won a few national championships also.

UNA would have kicked SU ass the last 10 years when you thought you were good. Dont let that D2 thing fool you. I KNOW the years they won back to back to back national championships they would have easily won the SWAC. They were putting 50 and 60 point assbeatings on everybody they played. There is not and has not never been a big difference between the SWAC and GSC football contrary to what you may believe....difference is they have alot of national championships and the SWAC doesnt.

I think Delta State had a study done recently on a possible move up to I-AA and decided the move would cost too much right now. If they moved up they would probably land in the Southland. They are great at baseball, good in football, and not bad in basketball.

Staggalee83,

You were right (I was mistaken) I went back and researched the article below. Valley was the one who pulled out......

MVSU/Delta State To Discontinue Rilvary.

Mississippi Valley State and Delta State will discontinue their football rivalry after this season, with the

Statesmen signing to play a home-and-home series with Alcorn State starting in 2004.

The two-year agreement between Alcorn State and Delta State was brokered by Braves athletic director Robert H.J. Raines and former Statesmen AD Jim Jordan, who resigned at the end of last season.

"We had an early date that was going to be feasible for both schools and we both thought that it would be an outstanding opportunity to get two in-state schools together who have never actually played football against each other and possibly develop this into a pretty good annual event," Raines said Wednesday.

Jordan resigned after last school year and was replaced by former Ole Miss athletic administrator Brad Teague, who was happy to have another Mississippi school on the schedule.

"We've really enjoyed our relationship with the SWAC, and Alcorn said they were interested in playing us. So, we jumped on that quickly," said Teague.

Teague said MVSU decided to drop Delta State from its schedule.

Delta Devils coach Willie Totten said earlier this week that Mississippi Valley State wants to play in more neutral site games against other historically black schools. So-called "classic" games have been played in St. Louis, East Rutherford, N.J., and other major markets in recent years.

The games usually provide good exposure and a nice payout to the teams involved.

A message left at the office of MVSU athletic director Lonza Hardy on Friday was not immediately returned.

Delta State and Mississippi Valley, separated by about 40 miles, had never played each other in football until Jordan and former Valley AD Chuck Prophet agreed to a home-and-home series starting in 2000.

The Division II Statesmen won the first two meetings, before the Division I-AA Delta Devils took last year's game.

This year's final game in the series will be in Cleveland on Sept. 13. When the teams played at Parker Field in 2001, the game drew nearly 8,000 fans -- by far Delta State's largest crowd of the Teague expects another huge crowd for the Valley game this year.

The game has drawn good crowds at Rice-Totten Stadium, as well.

Also, the road team saves money on travel expenses.

"It's something we need and something we appreciate," Teague said. "I think it made good sense for them and us."

Raines said the anticipated big home gate and short road trip were the two main reasons Alcorn State decided to schedule Delta State.

There are no plans beyond the two-year agreement between Alcorn State and Delta State.

Itta Bena and Greenwood, Mississippi is one of the most inaccessbile areas for SWAC teams as it stands now...no full service hotels, etc. Cleveland, Mississippi ain't any better...they had major problems hosting the SWAC Spring Sport Championships...

Delta would be strictly a local draw....anywhere outside Itta Bena and maybe Alcorn no one would care....imagine them in Texas

and again...who would you take in to make it an even draw?

as for competition....they can recruit the best of both worlds..white and black..something HBCUs will always have an uphill battle to do...

Man I checked out the Womens basketball records and they have beat a lot of D1 teams and have a winning record agains almost every team they have played. They used to beat up on all Mississippi women teams and I mean all not one has been spared. They wan recruite better period.

Check out past Ms. College Womens Basketball teams.
They are better than Delta State.

That the point I have been trying to make when everybody starts talking bout how GOOD they are in this conference.
Smack is one thing, but the truth hurts and nobody want's to talk about that.

It's like everyone is satisified with beating schools that really can't beat anyone outside of the HBCU world.

Not downing anyone, but everyone need to start looking at their programs and start comparing them with how they would compete with the the better teams across the nation.

Again....................Delta State would have no problems beating our best teams the last 5 years or so.
