Deion claims an HBCU never recruited him, but a former FAMU coach Rudy Hubbard tells a different story

Deion called HBCU coaches scared to recruit top athletes in the early 80s and Hubbard was like “FOH”

But Hubbard was recruiting him as an option QB during a time when FAMU football mediocre (shortly after the National Title), so Deion made the right choice in the grand scheme of things. It led to a HOF career.

The only time Deion thought about HBCUs back then was when he was on “The Set” at FAMU

This is the part that needs to be highlighted. Deion, early on, falsely implied that HBCU coaches weren't trying to recruit top-level recruits as if he was doing something no other coach was.

Coaches did it back then and they are doing it now before he came in the picture (he gets credit for actually being able to sign a large number of them at one time but he ain't the first to do it)

But of course the Dei-Hive would ignore this because people dare call him out on this lie.

Deion isn’t the first. I don’t know why he isn’t ok with just being the best at it. Just say you are Jordan as opposed to Dr J. What’s wrong with that? Strange.

Maybe ole Hubbard is lying.

Like Steve McNair wasn't recruited to Alcorn. HBCU coaches been trying to holla at 4 and 5 stars. You do have to have an angle. Mac was being recruited everywhere as a db, so Alcorn with his older brother as qb was like you know you can come here and ball out like Fred right?

Or mis-remembered….lol
Nah...head football coach in the state of Florida during that time. You better believe Hubbard reached out.

Keep in mind, he also said he told Deion that they didn’t have the money to pull him...and when you look at how big time college programs did things back then...well...

Correct.

Did HBCUs try to recruit his three sons? 🤔 Because, the oldest one attended SMU.

I would love to hear his thoughts on HBCUs before coming to Jackson State.

Well, Deion was the one going around saying that no HBCU tried to recruit him. And if what Rudy Hubbard says is true, then why is there a problem with what Kenn did? Deion opened that door, and Kenn and Rudy Hubbard walked in. Just saying.
I'm just pleased that a HBCU (FAMU) did attempt to land a prominent athlete at the time. Sure there were many offers (above and under the table) and Coach Sanders may have forgotten...........this should shake his memory.

With integration came the bag man as well enticing the prominent black athletes, the same game they are pulling now. The late 70's and the 80's was the beginning of the end. OU and all SWC conference members all have "30 for 30" documentaries of playing players no one is surprised. Tennessee will give an athlete a Happy Meal and money to go with it right now. The Regan economics era of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. ie PWI's and HBCU's
