ASU’s Dr. Tommie “Tonea†Stewart was honored Nov. 25-26 during a weekend of celebrations that drew former students, fans, well-known entertainers and others who came to applaud the actress, teacher and innovator for her many accomplishments.

The ASU Theatre Department and a committee of theatre alumni coordinated the event to recognize Stewart for 20 years of service to Alabama State University and for her professional accomplishments as a veteran of more than 40 years as an actress.

The weekend-long event began with a “roast†of the woman that many of the participants called their mentor. The night was filled with laughter and nostalgic memories, especially those related to her work with ASU students. As a testament to Stewart’s influence on her students, more than 150 theatre arts alums returned for the festivities.

Veteran entertainer Clifton Davis was on hand to lead the roast. “We’ve been friends a long time,†he said. “She’s always been so down to Earth. I’m more than thrilled for her to get this recognition.â€

On Saturday, the unveiling of the Silvera-Richards-Stewart Center of Excellence for the Study of Being was unveiled. It will be the only center of its kind in the world. “Being†is an acting method developed by director, actor, producer and writer, Frank Silvera and pioneered by actress Beah Richards. The acting method is one that Stewart has utilized, taught and perfected during her career.
