D1 Black Colleges Should Put Their Hoops Program First.

I know the SWAC is mostly football fans, really even the SEC or any region in the South, it's all about football. But my thinking is that the big SEC schools can afford to put football first or provide more money to their football program. Fans in the South do not come out for basketball as they do football.

For D1 Black colleges in the South though it's like a Catch-22.
Black college AD's know fans like football and that path to the primetime lights of ESPN and CBS is a big strectch for football.

Basketball for D1 Black colleges to reach the bright lights of CBS and ESPN is or could be within reach....if they would pay their coaches more than Football coaches, put more money into recruiting and travel budget for the hoops program rather than football.

Black colleges are doing it azz backwards. I mean,look.. D1 Black colleges are classifed as D1 just like the big schools;the oppurtunity is there to reach NCAA Final Four. What chance does a D1 Black college have playing in the Rose Bowl,Sugar Bowl on New Years Day? NONE. But the chance is greater to reach the Final Four only if Black colleges make basketball first as a priority rather than football.

The door is wide open for SWAC hoops teams to reach that level of competition only if the football craze fans realize that this is the best path economically and come out support basketball like they do in football. The money Black colleges lose in football could have been used as an advantage for their hoops programs.

I know here in the South, that's going against culture and tradition of tailgates and bands. But until the mindset change in the Black college circles, then Black colleges will continue to get"drove" playing with the big boys. And will continue to be small time!

Lord, I've said this for some years now. Basketball is our best ticket... clearly. If ONE of our schools can make a real investment in building a basketball program, the rest of us would catch on. NO WAY a black college should not be in contention for the NCAA Championship every year.

Can the same statement not be said about baseball. It appears to me that baseball has the best shot at getting deep into the playoffs . Pv is a good example. Had they not been put up against rice "who is one of the powerhouses in the nation" the last two years Im almost certain they would have advanced.

I agree, but that will not fly at SU, GSU, AND JSU, but there should be more of an commitment to b ball, there no reason for the SWAC OR MEAC not to be on the level of and SUN BELT OR EVEN BETTER THE MVC.

DUKE is a school that puts basketball first, so is Wake Forest and I don't believe their student enrollment is near the average SWAC school.

All it takes is money for recruiting and coaches. It doesn't even require top notch basketball facilities.

Much of the success in college basketball comes from coaching. You don't have to have a top notch basketball coach to be competitive, you just need to supply him with the tools to be successful.

Georgetown.

Sure, George Mason reached the Final Four recently. Gonzaga made the Elite Eight. But what other mid-major reached the Four Four. Notice that I am not even talking about small schools.

Note. I am asking because right off I cannot remember any other mid major reaching the Final Four recently than George Mason. I do not think that an Ivy League team has reached the Final Four since Penn in '79. But I could be wrong.

Our main problem is the money games in basketball. I have said it before, we need to make our money on football and focus on being competitive in basketball and baseball. Getting rid of the 7-game mandate was a big start. Now schools that need big paydays can seek them by playing in a classic, an FBS/I-A team, or adding additional home games and using the extra funds to eliminate a few money games. Last season, one SWAC team had nine straight road money games to start the season. You can't win like that and that brings down the conference's RPI.

I live in the Philadelphia area, the home of BIG 5 basketball, La Salle (my grad school - won in 1956), St. Joes and Villanova (Won it in the 80s), all have made noise in March Maddness over the years (Temple and U of Penn. round out the Big 5). Student body size any of them would fit in the SWAC.

Its rare for a school to do well in Football and Basketball, but it happens - can we say the Florida Gators.

Hampton was the Basketball HBCU for a couple of years until they lost their coach. I think another will step into the spotlight over the next few years. My guess is that it will be a MEAC school.

if any school is capable of climbing the ladder it would be AAMU...They should be in a BCS game in 10 years top!! LMAO!! I would not have a problem with the SWAC going back to eight teams, oh UAPB so nine..Or we could drive right up I-65 and get TnSU to join!! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

I think people need to realize that UCONN football program was D1AA when their basketball team won the NCAA championship and the same for Georgetown. Georgetown football still plays D1AA. UCONN football program is now D1A. I would think that they had help from TV revenue.
