Could Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic?

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I haven't read all the comments but I knew the Superdome officials were not going to replace GSU. Times and things are tough right now for all HBCU FANS. Because current gas prices are a challenge. Everything is high. Our fans have to make choices just to survive. The Superdome officials just have to suck it up and stick it out until things get better.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I know what,GSU fans better get up off their ass and stop living off of Eddie Roberson.

Those days are long gone.

The attendance started dropping when Broadway was shutting Pete's teams out during his last two years...Then the Grambling fans attendance dropped off when we brought back Doug and the program declined. Two unsuccessful hires, first by SU with Stump and then GSU with Doug hurt attendance.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

When I think of Bayou Classic, I think of Southern Louisiana. The word bayou refers to the small streams or rivers and marshlands typically found in Southern Louisiana. It is a reference to a place - New Orleans - rather than the teams participating in it.

Of course, Baton Rouge and Southern University are also located in bayou country adding legitimacy. Grambling, not so much.

It will very well still be the Bayou Classic without Grambling.

I hope you are kidding and not really that uniformed about what a bayou is and where they are located. They are not exclusively Louisiana and definitely not exclusively South La. I grew up in North La and fished in many bayous of Catahoula and Tensas Parish. SMH!

bay·ou

/ˈbīo͞o,ˈbīō/

noun: bayou; plural noun: bayous

(in the southern US) a marshy outlet of a lake or river.

Origin

mid 18th century: from Louisiana French, from Choctaw bayuk .

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

It seems the best solution would be to move the Bayou Classic to another venue. This is all about money, and quite frankly, the Superdome could pursue another avenue that would generate much more income. The BC and BCF, in general, aren't the hot ticket items they used to be. Now is the time for SU/ Gram and the Superdome to part ways.[/QUOTE]

I would have no problem with that either!

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

1. Kill the free concert during the game. 2. Push the start time back to 3:00 like it use to be, folks are still hungover for the early 1:00 pm start. Folks party in New Orleans until the sun comes up. 3. Gram folks need to buy more tickets. I heard SU sold 80 plus % of the Bayou Classic tickets last year.

I don't know if the 80% number is right, but I do know that a lot of Grambling fans got turned off by how quickly things deteriorated after 3 years of domination in the Dome under Broadway. SU fans should understand that as you guys dropped in attendance in the DOME and on the Bluff with the losing under Stump Mitchell.

The game lost it's luster because of coaching hires and the quality of product on the field. Let Grambling get a run going again and watch the decline happen in the other direction. But the truth is that both teams don't draw the excitement as it once did... as Mighty Dog stated in his post, the younger fans are losing interest...I see it on here with all the SEC fever.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

MikeBigg is right. This game, like a lot of hbcu classics, has gone from a perennial must see event to a year by year "let's see how the teams look this year" deal.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Do you know who organized the concert during the game? I have yet to find somebody who can give me a direct answer and everybody I talk to thinks it’s a bad idea. Last time I was at the classic was 2012 and there were about 30,000 people out there watching it then. It was a struggle walking through them to get inside the building. Also, I agree with you on that start time. I wish it would be at 6:30 or 7.

I remember when the games used to be at night. I am in favor of a 3 or 4pm start time.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

What is being overlooked by those who seek to point the declining attendance at Grambling, the low 32k attendance (even if only 1 person was a Gramblinite) means that the SU attendance is down as well. Either that or you are admitting that when the attendance was in the 65k-70k rang the fans were mostly there to see Grambling. So unrealistic of those who think that only Grambling is responsible for the decline in attendance. I live here in BR and although I haven't been on SU campus for a game since Pete's last season (maybe Stump's first year), I am aware of instances when you can hear the wind whistling through Mumford. This is not to put down SU, but to tell everyone that the Jaguar Nation has been known to be reduced to a Community from time to time.

Don't say that, even during the declining Richardson years and also the Stump years SU still put 50,000 in the stands, let these people tell it.

Ah you aren't familiar with north Louisiana, I can tell. There are some bayous in north Louisiana even though most are in south Louisiana.

Nope. Mike Bigg has never fished in a bayou in north Louisiana. Mike Bigg fished in a creek. But, no bayou.

lol... that's a good one. MB got his azz whupped at age 10 for sneaking to Kemp Lake and robbing a Trout Line (bet you don't even know what that is huh). You thought McDonald's Filet of Fish was the only fish edible.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I moved out of the ghetto last year. Live out here with the white folks now. Actually have a lake in my backyard. Fished a little for bass. Only caught a catfish though. :(

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Maybe people stopped going because they can watch it on NBC for free? Don't even need no cable, direct TV, internet video feed...just local NBC affiliate reception.

I don't think anyone was saying that. lol
And in the declining Richardson years, only 2009 saw a drop off in attendance. 2008 was the highest attended Bayou Classic post-katrina. I do remember folks in here talking about they should axe the BOTB, which has close to 25,000 in attendance each year, for concerts like that was going to get more people in the game. lol

I don't think that's it because we have tallied 70K+ in attendance while on NBC. Further, I don't think it is only 1 factor. IMHO, it has to do with several things.......economy, product on the field for both teams, Katrina/displacement of people in NOLA, poor business decisions (i.e. who puts on a concert outside while the game is going on?). Having said that, the game is trending in the right direction but have work to do.

Then those that wanted to see the game had to fight through the concert crowd. lol
