Could a 3rd D1 HBCU conference thrive?

Most of the Blacks in the State if they want to attend a HBCU are choosing Claflin and Benedict.. The problem with STATE is compared to all the Public PWC/U they are just behind in facilities, scholarship offerings. I hate to see it... But it's just how it is.. the public universities in South Carolina seem to be more Progressive and South Carolina State was honesty left behind

As someone that lived in Greenville..I can tell you this.. SC State is just so far behind..
CCU is now the hot school in the Lower State. If the kids are not getting into USC they are heading to CCU, USC-Aiken. FMU, College of Charleston..

In the Upstate its USC Upstate formerly USC Spartanburg. This school is growing like crazy. Already the largest BSN program in the State... just finished building several new buildings and about to start on Phases 2. Which will be a new arena.. Talks are ongoing to separate from the USC System..

Then you have Clemson, Winthrop, Lander.. Even the Private expensive colleges likes Wofford Furman, Presbyterian are doing well.

Not only that but schools like Claflin have overtaken us and haven't looked back. A fence separates the two campuses and when I was in school Claflin was a small private school nobody wanted to go to. They've done some special things since, and now it's a destination for many.

But SCSU has been under attack for at least the last 30 years. Dr. Hatton was the pres my fr year and I can't remember if she was one of the ones trying to push the move to USC at Orangeburg or not, but even back in 93/94 you started seeing some changes and a push to get more white students on campus.

Has Jim Clyburn made any attempts to help improve the situation or get to the bottom of this sabotage?

SC State has had problems like most HBCUS. But some of the problems are self-inflicted.. From the incident with the Board where the State had to step in and talk about closing the school for 2 years to CLEAN up the school. And then the Funding for the Clyburn Transportation Center.. Clyburn set aside MILLIONS of dollars from the Fed Govt for the Center. Half the money was sent to build the Center...nothing happen.. A Few years later CLEMSON builds ICAR TRANSPORTATION CENTER and literally with BMW GE DELTA As a few partners it has became a research hub in the Upstate.. As I stated earlier all HBCUS struggle, but when you continued to have bad press, low enrollment..Those State legislators don't feel sorry for you.

I lived in Greenville (well Simpsonville) for 2 years.. .loved the city.

Dang man. 900ish enrollment. This is news to me. Never would I have imagined it was this bad. That hurts to hear that. Wow!

That’s barely beating Tougaloo & Rust #s. 😳

Think about this for a moment

How many HBCUs are actually growing to record breaking enrollment levels and thriving?

Southern for example.. SU and GSU were worse off then SC State.. under Jindal... SU enrollment dropped down to 4,000 it's now in the high 7,000 it is suppose to reach 8,000 next year... I used SU because their struggles have been similar. But unlike SU..State has received millions for a new band room, Science Complex among other things.

PVAM enrollment is growing and will reach 10,000 soon AND TXSU is 2nd only to A&T in enrollment.

As I stated in above post.. Students in SC are just not into going to State.. I hate to be blunt, I went to Dorman the 2nd largest high school in state. We had 7 high school counselors, one of which was black. She received her BA and Master from State.. Students that were maybe interested in going to state she made a point to steer them in the direction of going to either SCC OR GVILLE Tech and transferring or staying close to home in the Upstate.. This was a alumnus of the school

I really think folk are underselling what happened to HBCU funding (and higher ed funding in general) these last 10 years with Republican-led state assemblies/legislatures. The cuts damn near killed some schools.

Jindal and Brownback in Kansas were doing the same things to higher ed in their respective states ... with terrible results.

Alabama has had 1 Governor that wasn't a card carrying conservative and he served 1 term from 1999 to 2003.

The key to survival is an alumni base that doesn't just live in Democratic state legislative districts. If the republicans have a majority in the state legislature, and you have no Black folks/alumni in republican districts, your ass is grass!

A damn shame....being undermined by one their own alums, but the scenario you described also sounds like money might be changing hands.

You mean you know people are underselling what happened and what continues to happen? It really is irrefutable and without dispute. Even in Texas, with it's vibrant off-the-chain economy, the public HBCUs are not getting their due. TSU and PVU could do so much better funding wise if they would put their heads together, but alumni from both schools are tribal to their own detriment and disadvantage. There are nations around the globe that wish they had the Texas economy.

Were it a sovereign nation, Texas would have the 10th-largest economy in the world. In 2017, Texas had an approximate economic output of $1.7 trillion, putting it slightly ahead of Canada and slightly behind Brazil.

I know this thread was started because of NCAT leaving the MEAC. But we tend to forget A&T athletic department was in shambles including their football team being in last place in the meac for several years.. But instead A&T put a plan in place and hired the right people from the AD to Coaches and they set the bar not to be mediocre..
Academics wise A&T nursing school lost their accreditation. But again they put a plan in place.. They have the 2023 Vision and they put people in place to reach every goal..People that knew how to do their job.... From increasing STEM grads, to diversifying enrollment, increasing federal grants etc..

Most of our HBCUS are behind the 8-ball... NCAT attitude from what I can see was that we are competing not only with other HBCUS, but with our other counterparts like App State, ECU, WCU, UNCC, UNCG, UNCA. etc..

Bruuuuuh,

You hit on something I've always harp on higher ed: the hiring of dynamic, charismatic and competent people in leadership positions. It's one thing to have a charismatic person energizing your stakeholders. It's a whole 'nother thing to have that charismatic leadership be competent and making those moves. Look at Grambling's progress after hiring Rick Gallot.

Mississippi is still going through it now. Just have to hope the state can survive 4 years of Reeves aka Phil Bryant Jr
