Re: GATEWAY or I guess, Dell

J/k about the Dell, I'm sure it's a great system too. But I've had my Gateway for almost 5 years, and I haven't been disappointed one bit. With either one, though, you shouldn't have any problem getting upgrades. Especially if the computer is a tower or mini-tower, not one of those flat desktops that sits on the desk. They still can be upgradeable, but not as easily as the towers. Upgradeable is VERY GOOD because you won't have to get a new computer anytime soon. You could prolly keep computers these days for many years (decades?) to come.

Watch out for some other brands. Compaq used to be very proprietary, meaning you could only get upgrades through Compaq. I'm not sure how much of that is still true, or if that also applies to HP, Sony, emachines, etc. But Gateways & Dells are usually easy to upgrade and you don't have to go back to them to do it. Their warranties are still good, though only on parts sold by them.

The key is WARRANTY and SERVICE. You wanna be able to call these folks 24-7 and get your questions answered. You also want warranties with at-home service. Gateway & Dell do that; and they also have online chat where you can get your questions answered much faster than over the phone. I wouldn't go build your own if I were you, cause there's no telling where that person will be when you need service done. And if necessary, Sperm can work on your Gateway or Dell just as easily as he can some no-name built one ;)

Thanks so much kev...:D

Where've you been hiding anyway?

super busy

It's been non-stop for me this week. Staying busy during the day, staying busy at night. I need to go home sometime and SLEEP  Won't happen tonight, tho. I've gone at least a day or two without cutting on my computer at home. That just AIN'T RIGHT!!! ;)

You make any more decisions on buying a computer yet? What happened to the one you currently have? It blow up in yer face or could Sperm do somethin' with it?

You'd better slow down and take care you YOU first. ;)

I still have my old computer, it's just that..........OLD and I can't use any of the new technology with it. That's why I couldn't get that DSL to work on it. I need to put some $$$ aside for the new computer fund soon.

AMEN sister! Now, to find some time to do that :smh: ;)

I just took a peek @ Dell's & Gateway's sites today. Aw man, my Gateway is letting me down. DTown, TODAY may be the day you got a Dell. They have a FREE 15in flat panel monitor upgrade on their cheapest system that ends today. Also, you can customize every part of your system (prolly not necessary tho). Unfortunately, no such offer with Gateway, and only parts of it are customizeable. I'm sure you can go into the store or call 'em to customize more, but maybe not. Such a shame :shame:

Thanks for the tip though. Keep me posted on those.

they also got...

No interest financing till 2004. Hey, you could prolly pay off that computer by then ;)

Celeron is actually much better than it used to be. It's gotten more memory on the processor itself to help process data faster. My preference is still Pentium, but if there's a significant price difference, Celeron could be the way to go.

As far as other brands, AMD is still neck-and-neck with Intel on quality & performance. I'd say either would be fine and you prolly won't know the difference.

Thanks.

You're the 2nd person who's told me this. I have a Dell laptop, won't be getting another PC soon, but was just curious.

If you were technically inclined, I would suggest building your own. I built the one I am using now and I am thoroughly satisfied. It is actually cost effective, especially if you want a say in exactly what goes in your computer. I constantly upgrade, so I had most of the parts I needed on hand.

Celerons are basically first run p4's stripped of cache.. They do not have the overclock capabilities and sometimes run a little hot. They are very attractive cost-wise. You will not get the same performance out of say a 2.4 ghz celeron that you would a 1.6 ghz P4... But hey.. You probably won't notice the speed difference if you are not a power user, and you will save money.

I like AMD. I currently have an AMD XP processor. I haven't had any issues with it.

DT, in today's paper (8/1/2003), Fry's has a computer on sale for $429. It contains:

Intel Celeron Processor
2.2GHz PC with CD-RW Drive (48/12/48)
256MB DDR RAM
60GB HardDrive
6 USB 2.0 Ports
56K v.90 Fax/Modem
High Speed 10/100 Networking (For DSL)
Windows XP Home Edition

and best of all
NO REBATE REQUIRED

Dayum good offer for a home PC. You can get a monitor there for less than $50.

Dirty,

I'm technically inclined (I work on servers and networks), but not to the point where I'm comfortable with building computers, at least not my own. LOL

Now, if I get a computer that doesn't work, I might work on that.

^Man, that might actually be HARDER than building from scratch. At least then, if you buy new parts & build, you have new parts that should all work ;)
