What's considered the best brand out there right now? I need to make a new purchase, but I don't need all the new fancy stuff that's out right now. I only need a nice, NEW computer for my son and I to use.

Any suggestions?

It depends on what you want in it. I got mine built and I paid less than a thousand dollars for everything. I even got a warranty on it. I'll call you later and tell you the details.
 
I got an HP with printer for under a grand too! They're good computers for the small amount of work I do on it!

I wouldn't suggest going with Gateway, but it does all depend on what you actually want the computer to do.

I've been hearing that the Dell's were really good and inexpensive. I don't have a grand to spend, but $500 sounds much better. Now, that's not $500 with rebates, is it?
 
Wanda, yours shouldn't cost a grand but I paid that price because of all the engineering software that I have on it. I needed mine home/work friendly. ;)
 
building vs. buying.

This is simular to the other thread.

It all depends on what you are going to do with the system. If you are going to play games, keep a diary, or surf, then go with the dells or Gateways.

But, If you are going to do some serious work on it, where expandability may be important, ie for memory, video, or hard drives. You may want to have your system built for you.

So, in conclusion, if you are goofing off on the system get the dells, hp, compaq, sony, gateways but if you are serious about your computer, have it built by a professional save some money and as the need is created, expand.

Yeah, that's the model we got for Kristin and it is a dayum nice machine. That is the price with the rebate, it takes about 3 months to recieve your rebate check.

If you wanna go that route, holla at me. We get employee discounts with Dell, which is another 5 or 10% off. Plus sometime they throw in an additional rebate. We only paid $432 for that machine after rebates, shipping, and taxes.

Thats where Im getting my new comp after my trip to Vegas (SU-vs-NCAT). I know they have the deal for a PC for like $499.00 with a mail in rebate.
 



I hear that they can build you a computer to your specs/price range at Microcenter off of 75 and Spring Valley. Their prices are very reasonable.
 
Remember WARRANTY. Dell has a one year in-house/next day & 3 year on parts DEFAULT WARRANTY.

Its not IF the computer breaks down, its WHEN the computer breaks down.
 
The only thing that concerns me about these computers is the processors.

I am partial to Pentium, myself. Have you all heard of any processors that weren't that reliable? I see a lot of Celeron processors around, as well.

J/k about the Dell, I'm sure it's a great system too. But I've had my Gateway for almost 5 years, and I haven't been disappointed one bit. With either one, though, you shouldn't have any problem getting upgrades. Especially if the computer is a tower or mini-tower, not one of those flat desktops that sits on the desk. They still can be upgradeable, but not as easily as the towers. Upgradeable is VERY GOOD because you won't have to get a new computer anytime soon. You could prolly keep computers these days for many years (decades?) to come.

Watch out for some other brands. Compaq used to be very proprietary, meaning you could only get upgrades through Compaq. I'm not sure how much of that is still true, or if that also applies to HP, Sony, emachines, etc. But Gateways & Dells are usually easy to upgrade and you don't have to go back to them to do it. Their warranties are still good, though only on parts sold by them.

The key is WARRANTY and SERVICE. You wanna be able to call these folks 24-7 and get your questions answered. You also want warranties with at-home service. Gateway & Dell do that; and they also have online chat where you can get your questions answered much faster than over the phone. I wouldn't go build your own if I were you, cause there's no telling where that person will be when you need service done. And if necessary, Sperm can work on your Gateway or Dell just as easily as he can some no-name built one ;)

Celeron is actually much better than it used to be. It's gotten more memory on the processor itself to help process data faster. My preference is still Pentium, but if there's a significant price difference, Celeron could be the way to go.

As far as other brands, AMD is still neck-and-neck with Intel on quality & performance. I'd say either would be fine and you prolly won't know the difference.
