CBSNews.com Turns Off Comments on Obama Stories...

THE PVAMU

Oh Shaela'.....
Today CBSNews.com informed its staff via email that they should no longer enable comments on stories about presidential candidate Barack Obama. The reason for the new policy, according to the email, is that stories about Obama have been attracting too many racist comments.

"It's very simple," Mike Sims, director of News and Operations for CBSNews.com, told me. "We have our Rules of Engagement. They prohibit personal attacks, especially racist attacks. Stories about Obama have been problematic, and we won't tolerate it."

CBSNews.com does sometimes delete comments on an individual basis, but Sims said that was not sufficient in the case of Obama stories due to "the volume and the persistence" of the objectionable comments.

THIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO WEIRD. I was just having this convo with someone today about the Clarion-Ledger... they should adopt the same policy.

When the conservatives think they'll lose control of what they THINK they have, their true colors tend to show, and their actions become very volatile...as expected.

Chemistry 101...send help fast...

I can appreciate CBS for this....it takes away their "voice"....:D

Now it makes me understand why the Houma Courier didn't carry a story about him at all ONLINE...it was front page of the paper....but their was not a single story on Obama on it yesterday. The forums section of the paper online usually lights him up.

Good move by CBS...but I sure ain't surprised by these comments what-so-ever. There are some seriously upset white folks right about now. :lmao:

I am definitely not surprised about the comments. This goes on on many sites regarding "popular" blacks, not just Obama. I recently read comments about Serena Williams on some white mags site. Terrible!!! So, what's going on with Obama is definitely not a shock. I recently heard Bob Costas on talk radio discussing the difference in how the media treats "print" letters to web comments. The difference is night and day. If you write a letter to a paper or magazine, they will call you and ask if you wrote the letter, try to confirm your identity, and on top of that edit that letter to keep it clean. But on the net, they simply let you post your comment without regard to content, other than vulgar language. Sad, really.

I know I've seen alot of mess with these hillbillies...they are sad.

KKK is all over America regardless if they don't wear hoods, they are still here.

I hope you all realize that most of those people making those comments are the folks you work for, work with and live next to everyday.

Kudos to CBS. It's not just the whites who are racist to Obama. I've heard some elderly black people in my hometown totally degrade him. Also, an African co-worker of mine is dead set against Obama. On the other hand, he held Hillary to the highest standards. Never using the negative tone and epithets towards her that he used against Obama. Racism is everywhere. The scariest part is not the racist we know..but the ones we don't. The ones we would not assume would be racist.

I agree...I plan to file a complaint with the clarion ledger in hopes of them adopting the same rules now that I know that something can be done.....It really is sad that when you read the the stories and comments that all of them soon have been turned into a racist forum...

JUST SAD...

I think about that all the time when I read the news forum's.:)
Especially when I read the Clarion Ledger forum's and know there's a chance one of these fool's could be my next door neighbor.

TURN THEM BACK ON PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You couldn't ask for a better thing to happen to him. Let the world see just how far we have really come. The people making comments weren't going to vote for him regardless. But maybe some of those independents will stand up for the needed change in America and support the candidate that will bring it. So let everyone see just what America thinks.

I couldn't agree more, we should write to CBS and thank them for their gesture but ask them to give those hillbilles back their freedom of speech. Something they would take from us if they could.

Seriously, we should all think about it.

I was definitely thinking about it. There is strength in numbers. I say we do it and encourage others to do it as well.

I agree. Allowing those comments to be seen won't hurt Obama. Such comments haven't hurt him during all these months. It's counterproductive for Americans to conveniently pretend that overt racism doesn't exist.

Exaxtly, isn't that what we've being doing all alone? Clearly it hasn't gone away or just disappeared because we do.

The same for unpopular blacks as well. Some of the comments in the Houston Chronicle's stories about blacks/ hispanics are awful. Or even when the person is assumed to be black as well. When Corrine Bailey Rae's husband passed away the comments were off the chain because they ASSumed he was a black man...
