Bruse Eugene: man or myth

Richard was a good qb for Southern, but he was basically a "one hit wonder", or as Pete Richardson himself put it, a "one year" wonder.

Darnell Kennedy, on the other hand was a great qb under THREE DIFFERENT COACHES, and COUNTLESS diferent offensive coordinators and offensive systems.

He should definetly be above Robert Kent, and probably below only Doug Williams, Steve McNair, and Willie Totten as far as those who played within the last 30 years or so.

Quincy Richard doesn't even deserve to be in this conversation.

Darnell Kennedy was too short to be a top 5 QB. That guy could barely see over the offensive line. Kennedy is the "best of the rest." Quincy loss a year by taking 2 snaps in the Bayou Classic. Unfortunately at S.U. many QB's have to wait their turn. The other thing is we have a balance attack. A lot of these QB's were in chuck and duck offenses. Was DK BCF MVP? And did he EVER finish 12-1 in route to a national and conference title?

It doesn't matter. He is still the 5th (maybe the 4th) best QB. You put Q in those chuck and duck offenses that Valley & Gram has run, you would have received the same eye popping numbers. In 2003 Q showed you all at the Silver Aniversary of the BC exactly who was the league MVP, BCF MVP and the MVP on the field.

I do agree with Richard being a 1 year phenom. Kind of like Carson Palmer was at USC. There were high expectations when both came to school. But injuries and wait your turn happened to both.


Jrock. Richard lost his Fr year in 99 when Scotty dropped the chalupa. LOL. But he got it back in 2000 when redshirted that year sitting behind Troy Williams and Terrence Levy. Levy started in 01 and then Richard took over in 02 got hurt and we played musical qbs with Kurvis Sharp and Anthony Fisher that year until Richard was healthy at the end of the 02 year and whooped Grambling which set it in motion for the 03 season.

But seriously Richard does not belong in the top 10. Another year at Qb then he would. LOL@ the under 6'0 Qb thing. Will you feel that way once JC's name is creeping up the SWAC yards list. He will barring injury pass for more yards than any SU qb ever has. I can see him in the top 5 before his career over.

It's hard to compare their college careers because Fred started out as a receiver. He played quarterback for about a year and a half and did an excellent job. He wasn't the scrambler that Steve was, but I think his passing was slightly better. He also helped to shape the careers of Alcorn wide receivers Torrence Small (who later played with the Saints) and C. C. Tillman (who later played with the Broncos). Fred did get a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys, but ended up mostly in Canada and Arena.

All things considered, no QB in the SWAC dominated games like Steve did. and by the way, Alcorn did win two SWAC championships with Steve, 92 and 94.

At that time the SWAC was spitting out pros like chewed up tobacco who Doug faced quite often. :lol: He went on to Tampa Bay and turned that franchise around. Two of his targets at Tampa were Issac Haggins S.U. and Jimmy Giles ....Alcorn.

You have some strong arguments. One thing that I can tell you though is Steve looked like a man among boys because of the competition level. He would have not looked the same way against the comp that Doug faced albeit he still would have been a star. Again Doug looked good against much better athletes in college. You look at the way Youngstown State among others dominated Alcorn out of conference. That would have NEVER happened to a Doug Williams led Grambling team simply because he saw the best in the conference. I agree that Mack is better with his legs but when he was in college their was no Robert Brazilles for him to face. :lol:

5. RANDY HYMES/ BRUCE EUGENE - I think randy is the best qb to come thru gram in some time. He did not have the offense and skills personel that bruce has had and does have now. Randy was a gamer against anyone and fearless and won some huge games in gram history. Randy was so athletic that he could play any position on the field. Bruce is the man right now. I love bruce to death cause he is the best passer the swac will see in some time including doug williams. Playing in a 4&5 wide offense will get you big numbers also. I would love to see bruce in the single wing or wing t and see what would his numbers be. Bruce had his chance to shine against superior talent but did not do so. Bruce has to win these remaining games to cement his legacy. He has the numbers but his performance on a biggest stage is shaky at best.

I remember we went to play the real jstate in 2001 right after they just scored 58 points against asu. This was a big game for both schools. I look over at where the lockerooms were and who is playing catch with doug's son but randy hymes not even knowing how big the game is.He was never scared. He should have went to the hospital after the louisville game. He asked for no treatment at all. He was a leader. IF he got hit at all he let his oline have it. Rec who he was cool with got blasted in games when they ran the wrong routes. Bruce will always have the numbers but he does not have the BIG WINS RANDY DOES. I wish bruce would have that game the folks say wow he is a baller. Piling up yards in the fourth qtr will look good in the books but who have you beaten.

Doug played against way better comp than mcnair and doug was ten times the passer that mcnair was. A Doug williams will never be seen again in the swac for a long time to come.

Bruce has a great arm, but he is too big even a 3rd team QB in the NFL. I can't picture Bruce under the center in the NFL at his size. Although I have seen what those agents can do to players to get them in shape for the combine. I'm sure they can get him to lose 30 to 40 pounds in 4 or 5 months.

I agree it seems like there has been a war on black quaterbacks especially since the McNabb and Limbugh issue. I think that our conference need to make more effort to get our names out there too I wish there was a Bowl Championship series for the 1AA schools too we need to start beating on these white 1AA schools to get our name out there. What do you think ?
