Boeing Strengthens Ties with Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions

ST. LOUIS, November 2, 2005 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] NASA Systems, a unit of Integrated Defense Systems, has established engineering services contracts with six historically black colleges and universities/minority institutions (HBCU/MI) to provide additional opportunities for those institutions in NASA?s space program.

The contracts allow the Boeing Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs to bring students to its sites or have the work done on campus. Each contract is a one-year commitment with options for annual renewals for up to three years depending on available funding and performance. The contracts will give students and faculty valuable experience in the space program while benefiting Boeing, which gets to tap into the unique engineering ?brainpower? of each college or university.

Each HBCU/MI was selected following a thorough evaluation of their capabilities. The following colleges were awarded contracts with Boeing NASA Systems:

* North Carolina A&T State University at Greensboro, N.C.
* Alabama A&M University at Normal, Ala.
* Tuskegee University at Albertville, Ala.
* Southern University and A&M College at Baton Rouge, La.
* California State University at San Bernardino, Calif.
* Tennessee State University at Nashville, Tenn.

?These students will fill an engineering need within Boeing and provide services for our programs,? said Tom Henson, a Boeing procurement manager in Houston. Each of the Boeing engineering programs can employ students on a variety of special projects

One of the areas Boeing needs help in is three-dimensional (3D) Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Patrick Swartzell, a Boeing lead engineer in ISS assembly analysis and validation in Houston, says Southern University was a natural choice to help his team with a variety of 3D CAD software programs.

?We work primarily with two CAD software packages and often have to move extremely large files between these two programs. The files get even larger when translating them from one program to another,? said Swartzell. ?We?ve got Southern University looking at how they can reduce file sizes, which will save our customers time and money.?

Swartzell says Southern University also has four unique CAD labs, including the Boeing-sponsored Advanced Computing Laboratory, and a Computer Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE) lab that physically immerses students in a 3D environment and allows them to virtually manipulate models in three dimensions.

?Southern University is leading edge when it comes to CAD,? said Swartzell. ?Boeing has contributed significantly to their success in terms of financial support, donation of CAD workstations, and personal involvement of a Boeing Executive Champion.?

A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is one of the world?s largest space and defense businesses. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is a $30.5 billion business. It provides network-centric system solutions to its global military, government, and commercial customers. The only thing I don't like is that it seems the students won't get paid... there is no mention of it in the article.

Boeing is doing it for HBCU's.

I have Frat Brothers from NCAT, Alabama State University, Southern University, and Tennessee STate that work up in Boeing in St. Louis. Its atleast 8 Alabama A&M University Graudates up at Boeing also.
D@MN I forgot that Blaque Prince and his wife (PVAMU) works up there also.

Jag4life: Isnt one of the Jukes is up in Boeing right now.

Congrats to Boeing for supporting our Black Colleges.

That is nice.... they had a special program a while back w/ /PV to provide internships to students that did not fit the normal senior requirement, we had one here in the Dub-K for 2 summers

I was looking at a ranking of the most HBCU friendly companies. I believe Boeing ranked at the top.

You work for Boeing? How do you feel about the "big brother" type atmosphere? Maybe it is not the case for you there in STL.

I also interened in Houston back in 00 (Do you know LaQuinta P.?). LOL @ "big brother". To tell the truth I find it hilarious. From the "pep talk" emails that come down the pipe from the higher ups to the ridiculous ethics training we sit through evertime one of those higher ups screws up....all hilarious. Whats even more hilarious is the people I watch that just soak all this mess up. I could go on for days frustrated with the time keeping on a salaried job lol. I actually have a pretty cool manager so I may escape some of the lower level crap that you all might face. But I will tell you this since your in IDS(correct?). RUN FROM CMMI AT ALL COSTS LMAO(my group is CMMI Level 5).

Yeah I know Laquinta.

My problem was not with my manager or her managers. They were all cool. It was certain company policies and their enforcement (by waaayy higher-ups) and sometimes LACK of equal enforcement that got me.

Boeing in St. Louis is on point. I remember them recruiting heavily from Bama State's College of Business Administration. Also Mutual of Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska recruited heavily as well.

On another note, where is Albertville, Ala.? Tuskegee is in Tuskegee, Ala.

Glad to hear this...this is great news! Way to go, Southern University and Alabama A&M!!!!!!!!!

BP: we over here in wichta trying to keep our CMMI 5

j4l: I here that crap about the higher ups, i have a few bousterous people around me, and they go way off the deep end when it comes to ethics

Interesting....hit me up and tell me about this. If they'd enforce half the crap they feed us the CEO would...... nevermind.

I'm moving back to Houston now (THANK GOD) so we'll have to hook up. I just told LaQuinta we were coming back the other day.

udratherbme: How does CMMI work out for you guys? We'd could probably start our own forum talking about that lol.

LMAO...Oh I got to see the higher ups get their rosy view of CMMI broken down in a meeting smh. Made no sense at all...

No sense to waste money to have a documented process and not follow it... i have sat in many meetings and here the conductor talk about process this and process that, walk out of that meeting and observe for my ownself that very same person not following that process............... go figure

^^^ LOL thats because most of the time the processes don't save. And it was funny to watch a higher up stand there like :| when someone asked for some stats on how much we were saving with this.

Same ole company. They never change........
