Black Men in IT

Where are my brothers in the IT field? Where are they working?
Why am I the only black female sitting in a IT training class today and in Calif last week?

I know the IT field is large, saturated, and is broad ,but are my brothers being phased out? While at SU there were many black men in IT, so I guess they moved to other areas:cry::cry::cry:

I would like to at least sit accross from a table flirting j/k, at someone. All I see is middle aged, old, pot belly light hue men.
Seriously, I miss ya'll, come on back

I agree. I go to some of the Free Microsoft events and all I see is Foreigners. I only see a hand full of brothers their. And I usually go to the events in DC. I guess I'm one of the few remaining.

GIS here.

You're in the GIS field? I work in that field also. I'm a System/GIS Administrator. It's defiantly not a whole lot of brothers in this field.

Man, I liked GIS and the projects we got done. I remember taking those classes at Alcorn. Styles, weren't we in those class together??

I work at Fulton County Government Center in Atlanta Ga. In the Public Works Department.

I was looking for some GIS jobs in Atlanta last year. My wife and I have decided to relocate to the Charlotte Area instead of Atlanta. I wish I had known this last year.

And they just hired this GIS Supervisor in December 2007 here. There may be more openings coming soon too. You can always check this website.

I can't speak for other areas, but I know that a lot of folks in IT were getting laid off left and right here in ATL a few years back. I still know some people in IT, but I don't think that people are going towards the field like they used to in this area. The IT people that I know have been in it since before 2000, so they probably have enough experience to keep finding employment.

As far as California is concerned, from my observation you rarely see a good number of Blacks anywhere these days. This goes across all fields. My relatives back home complain all the time about being the only Black or one of only a few Blacks in their department or firm. It wasn't like that back in the 80's and 90's, but there has been a mass exodus of folks since then.

This is true. After 9/11 alot of my IT friends got laid off in the private sector. I had a colleague that I went to Jackson State with went to Devry for IT degree, but finished months after 9/11 and couldnt find a job, so he went back into the Engineering field.

There are a lot of us up here in the DC area. I'm currently working for SAIC as a Systems Engineer in Tysons Corner.

I'm in IT! I see a lot of black men in the IT field. The project I'm working on here with Raytheon is doing fairly well in having a lot of blacks in the IT field. Our network Engineers and System Admins are black. Our hardward engineer is the lead. Our test Engineer lead is black.

Me and one of the guys who marched with me work as developers here in Lebanon,TNright outside of Nashville). It's kind of a network of black male IT guys who know each other here in Nashville. Most of went to TSU and most of us compete against each other for contracts and other independent work. I do know that it's a number of us here.

Peace and Practice

Geez. I was beginning to lose hope. :emlaugh:

This specialization is where people of color severely lack. It's been that way from day numero uno for moi'. Every single corp in every single group/dept/region/and even area, there was only ONE developer (yet alone senior developer) of color. :retard:

It's ridiculously sad. :smh:

<========the only female IT Specialist and person of color in my group. But then again, it's a small group.

I am here. I wish I saw more females in my field and I am not talking about those Indian chicks.

I work as a web application developer at a local car insurance company.

There are more than I have ever seen at my previous jobs. What got me thinking about this was me attending networking training classes and I did not see any brothers. I know IT consists of many areas so I guess they are just not in my area of work.

I left Harris County after working there for about 7 years and black men were totally missing in my department. I can say alot about the county, but I will be nice:smh:
