Black College Baseball Season Has Started

February 2 - Florida A&M - won the final game of a three game series against Mercer 12-7.

February 2 - North Carolina A&T - falls in the final game of a three game series, 15-7, against Wofford.

February 2 - Bethune Cookman- lost the final game of a three game series 7-0 at Florida Atlantic.

February 2 - Florida A&M - split with Mercer on Saturday. FAMU won the opener 9-6 and lost the nightcap 5-4 in 10 innings.

February 2 - Prairie View A&M - is swept by Nicholls State, losing today 13-1.

February 2- Texas Southern - was swept by Lamar this weekend; losing the final game 13-0.
 
PV only has 17 players unlike some programs. I could not figure out how a team like Texas Tech can qualify 25 recruits and we could not.

We will be competitive but the lack of arms will hurt us until next season. Once the arms show up, it's over.

BP it aint going to happen overnight. Baseball and Football require more than Basketball. Just because Francis got the basketball team going good, don't mean the other coaches will be able to keep up with him at PV. I hope you guys don't expect them too. That would not be fair.


BTW,
As long as Cador is at SU, we will stay dominate. Just remember that. That guy from Forest Brook aint no Cador. Then you have look at JSU and TxSU as well. So it will not be as easy as you may think. It takes awhile to build a baseball program, even at a PWC.
 
Cador's run is over soon. All you need in the SWAC is decent pitching and your at the top. SU invested more in baseball than most teams early on so that's why there is a gap. It won't take much time to build our baseball program, trust me. In an area as hot as texas, the talent won't be far away.

TSU just got spanked by Lamar and their real young. The battle will be for second place since SU is loaded for now.

JR, the talent is there. We just got to get them on the field. One thing SU has that Texas baseball schools don't have is the lack of the TASP test. That test kills alot of kids.

Don't get me wrong, I think PV will get better. But Cador has done well during the times when Braddy was winning at JSU and GSU had tremendous teams. So PV getting better will not be any new thing for Cador. Remember one thing Cador has going for him ia that he recruits all over the place. Not just LA or next door in a Texas. Not only that , former Cador players are in good postions to help him. Pitching will always be a struggle for HBCUs because our kids are steered away from that position. So even though Texas is a hot bed of baseball talent, PV will still not get the creme of the crop with UT hanging around. SU's position is better, because even oleLSU former baball coach and current AD Skip Bertman sends a tid bit or 2 over to Cador. Maybe a player that LSU can't sign because they are set. Bottom line is Cador works his connections to get players. Mike Bigg can attest to that.

Cador is the key to SU. Simple as that. He is the man. He is well respected an his players love him, so just think how many players back in Florida(which by the way has more baseball talent than Texas bar none) that Rickie Weeks success will bring to SU. If that kid gets pick as the number 1 or 2 pick in the MLB draft, man aint no SWAC school going to be able to compete with that. That is a sure fire recruitment tool. Plus Woods got drafted in round 1, 2 years ago. Not to mention a second round draft pick last year.
Again as long as Roger Cador is coaching SU, we will be dominate. But hey I welcome the competition. As a matter of fact, I look for the SWAC to be competative this year. It isn't like SU will go undefeated. There are some good teams this year. JSU aint going to be no joke this year either.

I've been told of at least seven SU alum who are scouts covering
from Maryland to Florida. SU is only going to get stronger folks.

Baseball America Feature: Rickie Weeks

February 5 - Prairie View A&M - lost to Sam Houston University today, 15-1.

February 5 - Mississippi Valley - lost to NAIA Belhaven College yesterday, 3-2 in 10 innings.

February 5 - Texas Southern - On Tuesday at Nagle Field in downtown Houston, Sam Houston State senior Nathan Boyd threw eight strong innings, allowing only one hit and one walk, while newcomers Jonathan Hamilton and Andy Kasparek combined to drive in five runs.

In coach Chris Rupp's first game at SHSU, the Bearkats cruised to an easy 10-0 victory over Texas Southern.

The TASP sounds a lot like the FCAT test in Florida used to be. I say used to be because the FCAT has added science as a subject matter to be evaluated...and Florida HS athletes get higher scores than the general student population.

Sounds like the athletes in TX might need to kick it up a notch.

1. SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY - season expectations are high. Split with University of New Orleans this weekend. With three fulltime coaches, and a plethora of talent, including Rickie Weeks, it's their spot to lose.



2. FLORIDA A&M - Beat Mercer twice, S. Florida, and Alabama State. Three of their four loses were by one run. Lost to Florida International, Baseball News #28, 1-0 and lost to Baseball America's #18, Stetson as well.



3. BETHUNE COOKMAN - Lost five straight to BA #24 and BN #21, Florida Atlantic. In the next two weeks, B-CC will play BNs #25 Central Florida twice, BA #18 Stetson, and BN #28 Florida International three times. The Wildcats are on the prowl.



4. SAVANNAH STATE - Started unranked, but swept then BCB #6 North Carolina A&T in a three game series. SSU only losses are to D-II Elizabeth City and the MEACs Norfolk State. Winning the Florida Memorial Tournament padded the record and taking two of three from Norfolk provides a good boost into the coming weeks. SSU should cruise through the next two weeks playing a three game series with D-II St. Augustine's and fellow D-I Independent Morris Brown.



5. DELAWARE STATE - Tough start for the Hornet. A series against UNC Wilmington, along with matchups against North Carolina, Kent State, and Winthorp will prove to be a challenge.



6. TEXAS SOUTHERN - Faces Alcorn and Prairie View in the next two weeks. Winning the series against both schools will provide good momentum into a tough March schedule.



7. NORTH CAROLINA A&T - Lost to Savannah State in a their season opener, but bounced back and took two out of three from Wofford. UNC Greensboro, High Point and Duke are the competition in the next two weeks.



8. JACKSON STATE - Start the season against D-II power house Delta State on the 12th. Their two week schedule includes Arkansas Pine Bluff, Southeastern Louisiana Univ., and Univ. of Arkansas-Little Rock.



9. GRAMBLING STATE - A close loss to McNeese to start the season. GSU faces competition in Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the next coming weeks. The NAIA series against Texas College should warm up the bats and provide as a tune up for the series against UAPB.



10. ALABAMA STATE - Suffered two losses to FAMU. Next quality competition is against UAB and Alcorn. Miles College and Morris Brown are tune ups to the Alcorn series.
