Black College Baseball Poll

Fiyah,

Stop playing. Are you seriously trying to tell us that the No. 1 team in all of Black College Baseball is ...

Main_Team.jpg

Mississippi Valley (2003 Team)

Acutally, I rembered the debate from last year with Bethune Cookman and the Hispanic players in the Meac and Valley with the white players in the SWAC. I've heard PV is moving toward getting more Hispanics as well. Do you think this is why they are 1.2,3 in the poll? Are SWAC coaches now taking what they consider the easy way out or is it just all about winning? I know you can't discriminate so are we looking at the future of Black College Baseball?

I'm not sure if that is why they are 1,2,3 in the poll. After all SU was #1 last year with a majority black team that is rebuilding due a majority of its starters getting drafted. I'm not sure if it is fair to say that the coaches are taking the easy way out. With MVSU, maybe their head coach (manager) is doing his recruiting in areas where he established relationships in the past. As for Bethune Cookman, maybe it is because Florida is so heavily Hispanic populated and most of our great black athletes favor basketball and football. I know my son plays youth baseball in the Dallas area and there aren't many of "US" playing with him. Now don't get me wrong, it kills me to see our baseball, tennis, and golf teams have totally different racial makeups than our schools but I guess all coaches are pressured to win championships and most of them probably don't have the support system that Coach Cador has to help him locate talented black baseball players without using up his recruiting budget running all over the country trying to find them.

First of all why not? They were the second best team last year and anybody that knows anything about baseball knew that they would be the ones to beat (other than su) for the crown.

Secondly maybe you need to remember what that hbcu stands for, they stop being black colleges a long time ago even though some still refer to them as that.

Dayum, I am just agreeing with all you Jags huh? :D

bluedog,

The gist of this debate can be found here. It may or may not change your mind. The purpose of my original statement was to simply generate interest and make everone aware of what is actually going on in Black College Baseball.

Second ... I didn't know Southern had stop being a black college a long time ago. I think most of us still consider ourselves to be black colleges. It's sort of like what you had told me in a football thread a while back. Think long and think wrong.

.... So for example in your words, can we say that Southern really won the Black College Football National Championship last year if SU has stopped being a black college?

Yes we can

HBCUs are Historically Black
Still Majority Black
but not Exclusively Black

Team composition may vary, but the University is still majority black (right?).

I'm sure the a university where the majority of team is black ( i.e. Miami etc.) does not reflect the racial composition at the University.
That's all.

PV has a mixture of athletes...majority of them are black, several hispanics and four whites.

you have a talented ballplayer interested in coming to your program...would you not recruit them because they were white, etc?

In Houston, there aren't many quality black pitchers. We have several on our team now and they have shown glimpes of promise but they are still young.

There are more hispanic pitchers who have dedicated themsleves to baseball from early childhood. We have 2 freshmen starters who are hispanic and they can pitch. We have a good freshman hispanic reliever also who can throw strikes.

the pitcher who is white on our staff is one of the top 2 starters. Was the No. 2 starter on a regional finalist team....the ace was one of the top prspects in the draft...you think we're not goign to use him? Please....

aren't many baseball only blacks...the few there are, are going to be hard to get.

I understand what your saying but lets not get two different issues mixed up. SU, TxSU,JSU,MVSU..etc being a Historically Black College has nothing to do with and no control over who, what or why a given award is name what it is.

IMHO it's just a natural progression of things that eventually will be understood (hbcu name) and will not have a need to be mention.

Maybe not in my lifetime but it will happen. Kind of like the Pwc's don't address themselves that way but we all know that they are.

Gotta give MVSU and PV credit, didn't think I would see this four years ago.

B8sball17,

Excellent point. I had a glimpse four/five years ago. But, I can honestly say we did not have any hope as much as 10 years ago.

I am aware in Prairie View A & M's case much of the credit goes to former interim President, Mr. Tempton (R.I.P.); Athletic Director, Mr. McClelland; Sports Information Director, Mr. Robinson and assistants; Head Coach, Mr. Robertson along with the assistant coaches and players as well as the student body that supported measure to increase fees to support the athletics program in terms of additional scholarships.

Now we need the other part of the student body, alums, and fans to come on board. I must admit many of them have been showing their support. This will be needed for the continued process of improvement for the athletics program on campus. We are moving in the right direction.

Do any SWAC teams play any MEAC teams. ?I hope the VALLEY can keep it real, cause they broke me in the SWAC tourney. :lmao: :bawling:

some of the greatest names in the history of the old Negro Leagues belonged to players from Cuba, Puerto Rico, et al

Latin ballplayers playing for Black ballclubs is nothing new

nor is Black ballplayers playing for Latin ballclubs anything new

while we're on the subject,

what's up with the "tailgate" for the PV-TxSU doubleheader coming up??

cool

just give me the when and where on the yard (as well as what i can bring to the tailgate - besides my wit and charm)

man, folks like Fiyah, Jafus, et al will tailgate before a CHESS club meeting

they know how to DO it

Why is that so? most pwc's have all or majority black players in basketball for sure. What is it called when we make statements like that? Something other than racism, I think not.
