Black Athletes, White Schools...

Come on JR. Stop B.S.ing. FAMU has pretty high admission standards compared to other public HBCUs, but we still catch hell from the state of FL, for allowing admission to borderline and underline students who would be at junior college if not for FAMU. You know damn well that EVERY HBCU outside of Morehouse, Spellman and Howard has students who would not be accepted at the majority of their state schools. FAMU offers more remedial sections than ANY three other public schools in the state combined. NONE of these students can have a home at UF, FSU, West FL, USF, Central FL etc. And we were still doing this while topping the country in National Achievement Scholars, using our historical mission as a cover.

If not for top grades, athletic skills, talents in the arts or other VERY specific skill sets, the majority of these students would not be at these PWCs.

You are missing the point. What I am saying is that all our HBCUs let some ball players in that probably would not even make the marginal regular student cut. For example. We don't let too many 1.8 gpa students in SU. But I surely bet we have and I know for a fact we have allowed a few athletes to get in with that kind of gpa or low test scores as a prop where they sit out.

Answer this question and I will leave it alone. Do you think you have a better shot to get into FAMU if you are a marginal regular student vs a star football player who is a marginal student? Do you really believe both students are dealt with equally?

Again, I remember Doc Greggs telling us old heads why there were not as many New Orleans kids in the band anymore a few years back. He said....and I quote. "Alot of them can't make the grade and test scores to get into SU anymore" It aint like it was when you fellas were here" end quote. My LB ZN on this board will tell you the same story.

This thread is about the schools, not what happens after you are done with school (good point however). These folks do have their own schools in thier own countries, but since PWC are better in most case they cross an ocean to get to them and take advange of everything when they get there. All we gotta do is cross town.

What I am speaking to Lewis is the marshaling, allocation and leveraging of resources (top students and athletes) to the benefit of community institutions (HBCUs), which use the strength gained (exposure, corp support, research dollars) to serve the community at large (admission of marginal students and turning them into scholars, greater participation in the community with our youth, focused research and program development in issues affecting our community {sickle cell}).

For in state students yes. I believe that most students are accomodated and given an opportunity. I believe there are a greater number of poor students who beg their way in through a counselor or teacher than ball players of similiar academic profile. I can not speak to percentages which tells the full story. I GUARANTEE you that even though FSU has more Black students than that vast majority of HBCUs, they DO NOT except marginal Black students in mass and turn them into productive citizens.

See my argument was never that the PWCs allow us in. I know they don't and only bend for a few athletes when they find a loop hole like LSU did with this grey shirt rule for Trindon Holliday who was SU bound before that happened. All I was saying is the public, state run HBCUs are not as open as they used to be.

I concur, but in the case of FAMU, the state threatened funding due to all the remedial programs, which they felt was undermining the purpose of funding a junior college system. Also, the state funds at a higher level for Jr and Sr students than Fr and Soph students. Schools taking more risks have larger Freshman enrollment and steep drop offs in matriculation. Even though it has been cut down, FAMU still does 5 times more than the other schools and I am sure SU, GSU, JSU, MVSU, Alcorn, ASU etc are no different.

technically, PWCs are indeed pimping us...if we could not run the ball, would they even let us in for free with marginal grades? They see it like this....let us in with relaxed standards, we make our $17 million from the BCS...a few may make it to the NFL and give back but our longterm boosters will still contribute...

This is pure bullsh*t. Now, in the state of Louisiana, there are some standards to be met. Anyone (white or black) that don't meet the standard has a hard time (i.e. get sent to BRCC). But anyone that meets these standard can get in, and ain't nobody trying to stop them. There are many, many programs from federal programs to things like LAMP, that will help pay your way.

The difference between us and these other folks is we find any and every excuse to not do and always trying to blame some else. while they doing whatever it takes to win.

Take Japanese people for example, they threw all of them in jail during WWII and drop a nuclear bomb on them. That was 60 years ago, you don't hear them using that as no excuse in 2008. A 20 year old who wasn't born within 40 years of that sh*t using it as an excuse.

They got reparations for that and this country rebuilt Japan. Did they do any of that for us.

Correct Nt. You know I find it funny that White America can take credit for wars that their ancestors fought in like the Civil war, the American revolution, World I, World war II, but they can?t own up to what their ancestors did to black Americans for hundred of years. Come be real. They accept and acknowledge what they want to.

Nah. It doesn't matter to the "common" Negro. White folx have TRAINED Negroes to have a short-term memory and damned the past. :emlaugh: But, some folx have equated to REMEMBERING/RECALLING the past as actually LIVING IN THE PAST and NOT MOVING FORWARD. :retard: Wonder why some of us so eloquently and proudly celebrate Juneteenth VS July 4th; ditto for MLK Jr Holiday vs St Patricks? :retard:

Carry on. I'm enjoying the diatribe here. :)

same with PWC's...if we didn't have a talent that could be exploited for major funds and the state didn't mandate "diversity"...would they even bother trying to recruit any of us? I seriously doubt it...

I'm with Cliff......its like interracial dating with a scorned black woman.....black men (HBCUs) were fine for her at one time but just "one" of us (bad HBCU experience) does her wrong and the white guy (PWC) opens his arms all of a sudden and offers a small token (inducements) they quickly forget where they came from and act like they are the best thing since sliced bread

Preach! :emlaugh: :bawling: :emlaugh:

And that's my point exactly, you gonna always find an excuse. The fact that in 1988, the government gave japanese surivors $20,000 in sure as hell has a lot to do with 2008. If they gave the average black person that same reparation, the part they wouldn't be riding on, spinning and blinging around they neck would be in they mouth or at them mall. It has got little to do with them sitting they arse down and doing they damn work.

In addtion, they put some European Americans in there too, Germans, Italians, and didn't give them nothing.

Well, who runs that damn state that mandated diversity, Black folks damn sure don't. Like I said, you gonna always find something.

Stop cheerleading that bullsh*t.

P.S. :topic: Why you got that picture of that supercute girl up there, did I miss something in small talk or you trying to tell us something.

Catch up with times Band Fan, they dyking now when they get mad at black men.

they may but they'll go white first before they go dyke in some areas.....but in others areas its the other way around

regardless......we (HBCUs) were there before we were wanted and will be there after they were wanted barring some type of federal disaster

as for reparations.....now it makes no sense to even think about it....but then when folks wanted to settle down and own land, the money would've been put to great use

It's my job to give an "AMEN" when the real truth is spoken. lol

PS: That's mon amie! :swink: lol I want that for my bday. lol

This is so correct. The country of Japan got a lot of money from the U.S. Europe, mainly western Europe, also got a lot of money from the U.S. It was called the Marshall Plan.

WONDERFUL COMMENT, EXACTLY ON POINT ! THE BLACK COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE WILL NEVER PROGRESS BECAUSE OF A LACK OF UNITY. OTHER RACES STICK TOGETHER BUT OUR PEOPLE WON'T. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE MISEDUCATION OF THE NEGRO, BY WOODSON.:nod::nod::clap::lecture:

As someone who has read Dr. Woodson's book, I agree.

Didn't get the full meaning of what you are saying, but these people to whom you are referring dont have their own educational institutions, so they get down where ever they can, but by the same token, they take their skill sets back to their own country and build their infrastructure. It is amazing how India and Japan have come up. Many of the leaders in foreign countries and foreign corporations were educated in the U.S. and G.B. The comparable analysis would be Blacks who use the good incomes they receive from their corporate jobs to support Black owned businesses and purchase homes and build up strong Black communities.

No minority community has every resource they need, but the true measure of where they are going is when they have to go outside of their community for those resources, do they return the fruits of those resources to their home community.

They understand the concept of recycling dollars inside their communities. It is something we use to do.

People in other countries understand the quality of graduate and professional education in the U.S. It is why a lot of people from other countries are in our graduate and professional schools, including a lot of HBCUs. Speaking of Great Britian for example, Asaad, the leader of Syria, is an eye doctor who was educated in Great Britian.

same with PWC's...if we didn't have a talent that could be exploited for major funds and the state didn't mandate "diversity"...would they even bother trying to recruit any of us? I seriously doubt it...

This is a good analogy.

FAMU CLIFF,

This is the same issue we have been and are dealing with in Texas. It is not that difficult to consider similaries once one does the history on the relationship of previous governors of both states. I know for a fact that both Texas Southern and Prairie View A & M have a higher number of remedial college bases classes than our other tiered schools. It is a very convoluted political and legislative landmind when our leaders deal with this issue. While Prairie View has done a way with the open admission (which some alums have cheered and others are frustrated with), it based on the fact gainning additional state funds. Furthermore, the difficult comes with the fact that many departments have their own entrance requirements at Texas Southern than the overall school admittance policies. Unfortunately many believe it affects the matriculation and graduation rates of the university and their respective colleges, schools and departments with also affects state and federal funding opportunities.

To be honest for the most part student athletes at BCS level and other PWC schools are isolated from the general student population. So they generally are not exposed to many of the activities (good and bad) that take place outside of their internal sports network.

But yet those same WHITE girls carrying those flags are beating down some of those black athletes doors...lmao

I ain't racist, but I been brought this issue up. And what went down on that campus NEEDS to be addressed in my opinion. any student invloved in any activity of that sort should have been delt with, and those OUT-SIDERS on that campus should have been delt with by the law.....

Just my opinion.
All of this brings back memories when me and my step-uncle got into a heated arguement about SU/LSU. Some of our own people are very lost.

True to an extent....lol They raised the ACT entrance in 97 my second year at SU..but the N.O. kids drop off started in 98 and really could have picked back up in 99, but not by much. Rumors and grades played a part in New Orleans kids not populating SU band..after 99...
