Alabama State Univ.
Jackson State Univ.
FAMU
Morris Brown College

honorable mention to PVAMU, and Alcorn

 Worst in no particular order:

Southern Univ.
Alabama A&M Univ.
Grambling
Tuskgee Univ.

honorable mention for worst: Miles College

I agree with your top six. SU's drum major marches by himself, which makes him appear to be lonely. But, I like the way that he comes on the field. I think we all can agree with that.

Please ...for the love of God will people let Morris Brown rest in peace?

Yeah, I feel you. I will give him that. It does take some nutts to go out alone and perform to the type of crowds they (SU) bring. I did it once at a Bama St. home game. We (the DM's) had some things going on. Long story but its different when you have many then in a flash, you're alone.

 Yeah, you're right but I at least had to give them credit on that one. Their DM's did have a unique style and it look like they had fun doing it.

You know I gotta disagree with you sands...

SU's drum major has one of the most exciting entrances in my opinion. Go to any SU game, Home or away, and listen to the crowd when the DM shoots out from the band. Even before he goes into the backbend, the crowd is on it's feet, shaking their Blue and Gold shakers and screaming to the top of their lungs. Once the drummers stop and he goes into the backbend, the crowd takes it to another level, feeding off of every roll, pump, gyration, whatever you want to call it. Then when his head touches the ground, the explosion from the crowd energizes the Jukebox to new heights. The DM at SU in my opinion is as much about rich tradition and also the courage and bravery to go out and lead a group in front of thousands of people.

Props to my friend T.J. who was DM the years before I got to the band and introduced me to SU. :D

Props to Mario in the drum section who was my first DM.

Props to my LB Xavier who was DM for 2 out of my 4 years and will be getting married soon.

Props to my CB Donavan who was DM my last rip in the band.

Sand, you have a real good point. I guess I didn't look at it that way. His beginning performance is good. I think its just the rest of his show that didn't do it for me, along with the chain of command. On the outside looking in, it seems that the band takes care of itself without much dependence for the DM. But I have to agree with you on what you said. You make a good argument. Its all good.

Not true. The DM plays a big part. Do you know our chain of command?

No. Thats why I said from the outside looking in. And, according to former Jukebox members that are friends of mine, some say that many of them was just for show.

Back in the day- Doc, Assistant's, Band Captain (Usually KKPSI), KKPSI, DM (Usually KKPSI)

Between- Doc, Assistant's, DM

Now-Doc, Assistant's, KKPSI, DM (DM is usually KKPSI )

Please believe me when I tell you the DM in teh Juke plays a large part.

SU is #1 by far...

Jackson State's DM's are #2...I love each and everyone of them, except the girl.

PV is #3....:ebrow:

Don't really remember or care for anyone else's.

:smh: There's more to being a DM besides puttin' on a show on the field.

There's such things as responsibility, accountability,....
Don't like your variables. You can't judge a book by it's cover.

I guess with all of the fans taking pictures and the crowd going bananas when SU's DM takes the field means that SU's DM is the worst huh?"

The backbend is an impressive thing. No doubt.

I can completely do without the gyrations and antics of ALL DM's. They are pointless and do nothing to demonstrate leadership at all. I'm just not a showy person.

The SU DM entrance IS MOST CERTAINLY a rich tradition. They do a good job and seem to select the right kind of person to continue that tradition each year.

No legitimate college band needs more than 1 DM. If so, then the personnel have not grasped the concepts well enough and are not ready to make a proper presentation. The size of the band is not a factor as long as there is visibility.

It takes no more courage to lead a group in from of thousands than it does a rehearsal. You just have to be prepared, know what you are doing and do it with excellence.

How are Bama States dms good???? Doing 8 counts in the stands all game dont make a GOOD dm.... give them a mace and see what they can do in the stands? It doesnt take no skills to do gay 8 counts in the stands... i bet they couldnt do what AAMU dms do in the stands.... I dont respect no dms that do 8 counts all day in the stands while having an old ass director (sometimes on a ladder in the stands) conduct.

I say this only 1 person can blow the whistle at the same time. Bands with more than 1 DM is like 2 many chiefs and not enough on horns. With that said SU DM does what he have to do. That is start the band off and let the Jukebox do their thing.

Yup. ~sarcastically~ What crowd don't cheer for a DM?! But hey, thats your opinion, you are entitled to it. I disagree but I'll respect it just the same.
