Bears' Johnson draws eight-game suspension

NEW YORK - Tank Johnson is the latest NFL player to feel the impact of commissioner Roger Goodell's crackdown on off-field misbehavior.

The Chicago Bears' defensive tackle was suspended Monday for the first eight games of the 2007 NFL season, the third player sidelined this offseason under Goodell's toughened personal-conduct policy.

Johnson, who recently spent two months in the Cook County jail for violating probation on a gun charge, joins Tennessee's Adam "Pacman" Jones, suspended for the entire season, and Cincinnati's Chris Henry, out eight games. Jones, who's appealing his suspension, has been arrested five times and had 10 interviews with police since being drafted in April 2005. Henry is one of nine Bengals arrested last year - one of the reasons Goodell, with the approval of the players union and newly established players' council, established his "get tough" policy.

Johnson, who will be allowed to attend training camp and play in the preseason, seemed to accept his punishment.

"I think it's an opportunity for me to move forward," he said in Lake Forest, Ill., where the Bears are conducting offseason workouts.

"It's not my call to say whether it's fair or unfair. But Roger Goodell's a fair man; I know that. He took everything into consideration that he and I talked about, and what he came up with is what he came up with it. If it's in the best interest of the NFL, then I'm all for it, too."

Goodell said the suspension could be reduced to six games if Johnson has no further involvement with law enforcement and undergoes counseling.

"I am looking at it like a six-game suspension, because I definitely am very confident that I'm capable of doing everything that he's asked me to do and more," Johnson said.

If the suspension lasts the entire eight games, Johnson stands to lose $255,000, based on his salary for next season of $510,000.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said he expects Johnson to abide by the conditions that could shorten his suspension.

"I have faith in Tank," Smith said. "Tank has been a different guy for a long time. I think he's demonstrated that, and this is just another step toward getting him back on the field and getting this past behind him."

Rest of story

I am sure Pac-Man will be mad, he never spent a day in jail and he gets 1 year. I think its not fair, but Pac-Man's long history of screwing up, did him in.

I bet Johnson is mad he cut off them dreads and did all that grinning in front of the camera!!!...like the "man" was gonna give a damn!.....he still gave him the business:no::lmao:

Nah, I think Tank is really trying to do the right thing and get himself together. Lovie is talking to him and he is listening. The Bears management was thinking about cutting him if he got jail time and suspended but has backed off. I think Lovie had something to do with it. He will only sit 6 games if he behaves. The commish is trying to make sure he didn't make it too easy then Pac Man would have more grounds to challenge the length of his suspension which is going to happen anyway.

This basically tells me Pac man's suspension will be reduced.

I doubt it. The NFL unlike the other leagues never seem to lose against the NFLPA. Even if Goodall reduces it, Pac Man is a marked man. The Titans act like they don't even want him. I can see him getting cut and the NFL blackball him. Maybe a renegade owner like Al Davis will take him. But ole Goodall has incorporated fines and punishments for the teams now as well. So it is going to be interesting. The inmates will not run the asylum that is the NFL. I see ole Stern is trying to be hard on the NBA side too. Even MLB got hard with Pinella for his tirade. Things are changing. Everybody is worried about their image these days.

Hardly fair to Pacman, even though I think he's a bona fide idiot. Guys getting convicted of felonies and subsequently violating the terms of his probation, and he gets a year for accusations. Goodell set a bad precedent with Pacman's suspension. He can't suspend everybody for an entire season.

I think Adam Jones' suspension will be reduced. Goodell will reduce if he stays out of trouble for at least the first eight weeks of the season. I thought Tank Johnson was going to get the whole season too. But I guess Goodell thought better of it. I do like how he ain't letting these players break the law and not get away with it.

Tank Johnson under legal limit in DUI arrest

Looks like the Bears jumped the gun on releasing Tank Johnson. He was only doing 40 in a 25 mph when he was pulled over at 3:30 in the morning.

How many of us have driven faster that time of morning?

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) -- Tank Johnson's blood alcohol level was below the legal limit when the former Chicago Bears tackle was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving June 22.

Johnson's blood alcohol level was .072, under the presumptive limit in Arizona of .08 percent, police Sgt. Andrew Duncan said Monday. No charges have been filed pending results of a completed investigation.

Johnson, whose legal name is Terry Darnell Johnson, was arrested when officers pulled him over at 3:30 a.m. for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. Duncan said an officer placed him under arrest because he believed Johnson was under the influence of alcohol. He was released without being booked or charged after providing a blood sample, and police said he was very cooperative.

A message left with Johnson's agent, Bill Heck, was not immediately returned.

The 25-year-old player was released by the Bears three days after his arrest. The team said it was "upset and embarrassed" by the defensive tackle's legal troubles.

The Bears declined comment Monday.

It is still possible for Johnson to be charged with DUI, but it would be unusual barring special circumstances. The law in Arizona provides for such prosecutions based on overall signs and symptoms of intoxication.

Johnson already had been suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 season for violating probation on a gun charge. He spent two months in jail and was released in May.

Johnson was chosen by the Bears in the second round of the 2004 draft out of Washington. He played in 46 games, starting 15.

This is fudged up, the bears messed over him, its a straight :shame::shame::shame:

I still have no sympathy for Tank... Under the agreement, he was not to be out at that time, and he was still drinking and driving, no matter what his alcohol levels were...

So you've seen the agreement? Nothing I've read in the media said he could not be out late nor did anything say he could not drink.

J4L......The Bears said they told Tank that ANY kind of involvement with the Police was going to get him released. Lovie said they stressed that. I am sure they are also looking at the fact that you are in still trying to be out in the wee hours of the morning when no good can happen to you just because. Marshall Faulk made a good point about that on NFL network. Tank has to realize he can't hang like the rest of the players because he messed that up for himself. That's like a man caught cheating on his wife and she takes him back, but he can't hang with the fellas for a long while until she can halfway trust him again. Same with Tank. He is going to have to lay low and stay home for a long while and not be out late for a long while until he rebuilds his image. All that hanging out does is put a target on his back. As messed up as the Bears front office is....they did the right thing. Tank will get another chance somewhere.

Man he got fired for a speeding ticket... 40 in a 25. Point blank.

Yep, so they are basically saying they are throwing away there 2nd round pick. Because of his suspension they were going to save on his salary anyway. He was''nt making a lot of money (NFL wise) anyway. Someone is gonna pick him up for a steal and he's gonna turn this whole incident around and they are gonna regret it. It's not like he's done Pacman stuff and still hadn't learn his lesson.

He got fired because he put himself under suspicion of DUI and was still exhibiting that hang out behaviour after learning his lesson. Let me ask you this. If you were in Tank's shoes and got a second chance would you be out drinking and coming home at 3:30 in the morning knowing that the cops are out. Man I would be scared to do anything after that stuff he went through. Especially knowing that my employers have told me not to have any police involvement at all.

Also his blood alcohol was just under the limit and seeing that he is a big guy, that means he probably put more away than what we would have been able to do and rolled out in Phoenix of all places in the wee hours. He was asking for trouble. Why can't these guys use their money to get a ride home or bring the party to the crib. You have to admit he used bad judgement. If I have 1 beer or 1 drink, I make sure I drive the speed limit at that time of night. I am not trying to be pulled over for nothing. But hey that's just me. Tank will be fine and he needs to understand he isn't going to get a pass like some others will at this point. Even a speeding ticket will get you. I bet if that ticket had occured during a reasonable hour and no DUI suspicion then nothing would have been said.

He was under the limit... if he were visibly drunk they would have probably done or at least offered field sobriety tests instead of taking him in for a blood test.

Exactly.. That is all I was trying to convey....

Now that's just too much sense.

Would you have been out driving even three miles over the speed limit after drinking @ before day in the morning when you knew that if you got caught, you were throwing away your job?

He got fired because his speeding got him pulled over by the very people he was told to pretty much keep his ass from around, PERIOD. They didn't offer a caveat of, "You need to keep your ass outta trouble, but if you get stopped for going 25 miles over the speed limit, and they suspect you're drunk, but it turns out you're not, then that's okay." He shoulda slowed his ass down, or called a cab.
