Banks granted permission to speak with Texas A&M

A SWAC head coaching job isn't a lateral move to a SEC assistant. You say he is beloved but SU basketball games are empty.

I stand by each statement. Empty in comparison to the 80's and early 90's yea....but I have no idea what it would take to get those numbers again. Hell to me our football game s are empty for the most part in comparison to those times as well and we just won a championship in football. He is beloved around here though. We just have other issues as far as our attendance and fanbase, things that don't actually have to do with Coach Banks...just other things I don't feel like getting worked up over right now...

And Hell No....If the School is not named Kentucky and maybe, i said maybe Florida, then and Assistant's Job in the SEC is not as high as a HEAD Job in the SWAC. Other than money, what is the advantage. Money is not the driving force in every coach's career. If you are making money that makes you comfortable and you can focus on your craft and build what you vision in that program you are at, then that makes the job, doesn't matter where it is. Again, 200K in Baton Rouge, LA, + perks (comps to different establishment just for being the SU B-Ball Coach), is living pretty comfortable.

Texas A&M is not even a Top 5 basketball program in the SEC. Yes, its SEC but there are only 2 maybe 3 powerhouses in the SEC when it comes to basketball.

Say what? Money's not as important? Where'd you get that from?

Those that have money can afford to pass on it. Those that don't, usually don't. Perhaps Banks has a bankroll laid up somewhere.

all I'm saying is Coach Banks has got to do what is best for him and his family. I am not in his head so I don't know what his driving force is in his career. All I can go by is what he says and that is his goal is to build SOUTHERN into a strong Mid-Major Program. That is what comes out of HIS mouth. Of course that could just be "Coach Speak" and none of that is actually the truth, but all I can do as a fan is hope he means what he is saying and that we can all benefit together. Of course I am Happy to have him as our coach and appreciate him for what he has done for our program as well as the attention he has brought to our school and our conference, but never would I want a person to stay somewhere they really don't want to be nor would I want someone leading one of my programs who really doesn't want to. And as for him, I wouldn't want him staying here always wondering "What If"...

It just seems to me in having conversations with him that he Loves Southern and wants to see it prosper...in Basketball (men and women), sports in general, and for the University as a whole. That's just what I get out of talking to him myself. Personally I wish him the best in whatever he decides and I hope he is happy with whatever decision he makes. Selfishly I would love to see him stay here forever, but he has his life and career to lead. Honestly I never thought he would be here that long anyway because he is so good that someone someday was gonna throw a boat-load of money at him and he'd leave...but again I don't know that that is his driver. But if and when he does leave, I have every confidence that he and our Basketball Program will be in good shape at that point.....

Plus the next coach is only 3 minutes away from campus anyway so we will be alright:quiet:...Keep it in the family.;)

lol Not even 3 but I get you.

One day after concluding a visit from NCAA officials, Southern turned its attention Wednesday to the future of men’s basketball coach Roman Banks.

Athletic Director William Broussard and Chancellor James Llorens met with Banks to discuss enhancing the coach’s contract and securing his services long-term.

Texas A&M contacted Banks last Friday about the vacancy for the top assistant’s position on head coach Billy Kennedy’s staff. Banks spoke twice with Kennedy, for whom he was an assistant for two seasons at Southeastern Louisiana (2003-05).

It’s unclear if Kennedy has made a formal offer to Banks, who put talks with the Aggies on hold while awaiting an opportunity to visit with Broussard and Llorens. But the Jaguars appear to be proceeding with a sense of urgency.

“We had some really good conversations and things are moving in a positive direction,” Broussard said after the meetings concluded Wednesday night. “We’ve done some negotiating trying to put together terms that hopefully will be amenable. We’re not finished, but we’re encouraged that coach Banks has given us an opportunity to present our case.”

My take is Southern's pay raise was an insult I believe he deserved more than 24k..now if Banks is smart and TAMU is offering him his worth I would roll with it...for Southern to come back now scrambling to "enhance" his contract to keep him means that they devalued him in the negotiations of the current contract just signed

Thank goodness it's YOUR take and not reality.

You do understand that a contract is a MUTUAL agreement, right? He accepted those terms while having other options on the table.

nothing to hate about....he did what has been done before...I'm for adding help to the academic side/administrative side in this case as that's what got SU in this situation..coaches come and go..APR doesn't

STOP hating mama Tigers .

You all can't be this dumb for real...I guarantee you the notion of TAMU being an option was not on the table when signing for that measly extra 24K

STOP hating mama Tigers .

Okay...I am going to go outside and sit by the door to hand out hats and coats when the door opens at SU Basketball office!

My only qualm about it is ... why Southern didn't/doesn't have a buyout clause in Banks' contract?
