Bands performing to the visitor's side....

Why are bands doing this? I personally think it takes away from the game and competition experience... Everyone should take it back to the ole skool and perform to the respective university's home side.

As Samuel S. Griffin and Timothy Wayne Chambers taught me in MU 461 Band Techniques class, you always perform to the press box, and as a band director I always will.

SU normally does play to the pressbox. Kind of a staple for the Jukebox. What I notice now is that they rotate to the SU side on the road maybe for a tune or something. We used to do that back in the day as well. What's funny is I hear folks complain on why SU's band plays to the home team's fans. I am like that is standard protocol to play to the press box side for all bands.

Yea, I know Alcorn State has always performed to the press box no matter where we are as far back as I can remember (early 80's to date). A few portions of tunes may be blasted to the visiting side while the band is in motion, but the body of the show goes toward the press box.

For football games I think bands should play to their home side (so visitor's side). I hate when I go to a game and I'm sitting on JSU side but I'm watching the backs of the band members and can't see the Jsettes at halftime.

Why should the home side get all the attention?
I know back in my day it depended on where we were playing. Some shows was designed to split the show in half and play to both sides and some shows we would play entirely to the visitors side to give them a showing especially if the stadium was full. They would appreciate the attention and jam with you during the game.

.....Because it's called common courtesy and respect to the home university..... I can even respect a band show that splits it half and half to each side, especially when there is an enormous following from a university that is visiting. But when the entire show is performed to the visiting side (when you are the visitor), that is just rude and disrespectful. I've seen it done without regard to games being televised, which looks very crazy to me. In black college football specifically, band competition has been around since the dawn of time and I feel that it has dwindled across the board because band programs are not showcasing fairly. Part of the agenda is...can you impress the opposing team's crowd? It's already understood that you are loved and adored by your own core of university fans.

It is?! Some "opposing team's crowds" aren't going to cheer for certain schools/bands regardless of what is put on the field.

Naw, I think the Boom should continue to play to JSU crowd and anyone that wants to see both should start high-tailing it to the other side of the stadium as the first band is leaving the field to make sure they see the Boom.

Yes that is part of the agenda... Well it should be, I should say lol... Obviously, some leadership over programs is only concerned about getting "house" regardless to the caliber of show that is put on. The sure way to do that is to keep the show to it's own side lol. Well, I say let's go back to the way it used to be and face your opponents head on. Amen? I love that.:smoke:

Womp, womp. Just make sure you stretch before you start running to the visitor's side to see the Boom. Don't want you to pull a muscle.

Or you can just watch it on the internet later that night when the clips are uploaded.

Umm unlike most schools JSU Fans travel with the Boom and the football team so any Boom director knows to perform to the JSU Side unless the game is televised then u would have to perform to the Press Box.

No one will be moving to watch a Boom... I'll be at home and will have a press box view by default. I just think this is one aspect of games that needs to come back. Maybe I'm a traditionalist when it comes to this, but I feel that if you're as good as you think you are.....then make an attempt to elicit a response from the home team.

Because they know their show ain't worth a shat and they hope the "home" people will actually clap for this bullshat .
Bands that do that automatically get boo'ed in Memorial.

Not true. It just depends. Ask SU about the FAMU fans in Atlanta cheering. All this disrespect for opposing bands started with the new school mentality. When I was in the Juke we got plenty of cheers from the JSU fans in Memorial and the Boom got cheers in Mumford. Both bands played to the home crowd. That's how you wax(old school term) the opposing band by taking their crowd ON THE FIELD. It's nothing wrong with flipping the band to your side to give your traveling fan base a little something but not the entire show. SU is a master of this. Always has been. But Doc Greggs taught us you play to the press box side. Guess it was common courtesy with the old band directors who got taught that way. FAMU always did that when they came to BR. Even though they knew our fans were hostile and we did the same in Tally Ho knowing their fans were equally hostile. But both fan bases respected that each band tried to entertain the home crowds.

Frat it is this new school disrespect thing. Half of these schools don't have any fans traveling to the games anyway, so why would you play to the non press box side? I can see splitting your show up some especially if your fans travel like talking about. Even for our home games in Mumford we give the SU fans on the other side of the press box some of the show at times. But you don't play your whole show to the vistor side. I think it is cowardice if you scared you going to get no house from the crowd when you on the road so you play to your side only. But you already know bands have gotten to be STAND BATTLE bands anyway. So I guess it don't matter what is on the field. SMH.

That is why I hate that "zero qtr" shat with a passion.

Yes indeed.... I knew there had to be some ole skool people on here that knew where I was coming from. I know of 2 SWAC schools in particular who have done this or still is doing it since about the mid 90's, and it's just not a good look. Some out of conference schools are guilty as well. I know Alcorn's Sounds of Dynomite is notorious for going up against hostile crowds... We never veered away from giving that kind of respect at minimum despite the obvious hate/rival booing from ignant folks. I will also say the same for Southern's Human Jukebox....I've never witnessed it in my lifetime. Both bands have the mentality..."Here we are: Take it or leave it!"

Note to Band members and associated alumni: Let your directors know that it is not cool to keep this type of behavior up. People are tired of it.

That's how you knew if your show was kicking azz! If you could HOUSE OUT at someone else's stadium, then you knew your show was tight. JSU housed out in 90. Had Mumford chanting " JSU Rocks the House."

You should always perform to the HOME side. That's a common courtesy. On top of that, their fans are the ones we are exposing our band to. They should get to see the full impact.

Very true, I agree 100%. I always felt it was cowardly for the bands that didn't perform to the press box of the opposing band. It test your metal. It also made Bands come up with different innovative ideas for shows. It breads competition. Once you hit the field you are there to entertain that crowd & more times than not, the majority of the crowd is toward the press box. The crowd is the judge & when you take that opposing band's crowd it is a devastating blow to them. It collapses their heart. Its nothing like it. To go into enemy territory and snatch that crowd is what being in a marching band is all about in the Swac. I can recall plenty of games where Alcorn's reputation preceded them. I remember opposing fans asking us 'not to do them too bad.' Some bands have stubborn fans, but deep in their heart they know & they will let you know too. I remember coming off the field and one fan said. "Yall band tight but yall football team sucks." I calmly added...'thanks for the compliment.' Any band that doesn't subscribe to this is really robbing themselves of the true satisfaction of performing on the field.

Bands imo that have a history of entertaining & snatching crowds are...

1. Alcorn
2. SU
3. Grambling
4. Uapb (not sure how their shows are now but back in 98 them boys came with it hard, we returned the favor in 99 though lol)
5. TxSU at times.

i'v witnessed the jukebox play to thier side only. The first time i witnessed a band do this was at the boombox classic when it was held in jackson a couple of years ago. i figured that the jukebox did it because of the precieved disrepect that they got from the boom when they played "power" before the jukebox took the field at that battle of the bands in jackson. or maybe since a lt of their fans were there they decied to entertain their fans instead of the people on jackson's side. i thought it was strange butook it as just another way of playig up the rivalry.

personally i think that's some punk ish to only play to your side. nothing fees better than being a visiting band and stealing the home crowd's fans. we(uapb) did that to alcorn in 98. it's an awsome feeling.
