Attendance:HBCU Classics vs. PWC Bowls

...Just thought I would post some figures from games that were played in the same stadiums this year and last year.

Las Vegas Bowl-(Oregon State vs New Mexico)25,437

Las Vegas Classic, 2003(Southern vs N.C. A&T)20,514

Silver Dollar Classic, 2002(Grambling vs TN. State)22,537

Silicon Valley Bowl(Fresno St. vs UCLA)20,126

Literacy Classic(Grambling vs San Jose St.)31,681

...This shows me why many are chompin'-at-the-bit to invite HBCU's to participate in "Regular Season Bowls"(i.e. Classics)...Never under estimate the power of these Classics; these figures may look like a drop-in-the-bucket compared to the larger BCS Bowls but as you can see when the venue is the same you have two(2) HBCU's drawing just as many in attendance as the "closer in proximity" PWC schools...Many sponsors watch these figures...sometimes more than we will ever know!!!!!

...Happy New Year and may 2004 be even a bigger breakthrough for the Classics and the HBCU's!!!!!

G,

This is an interesting post. One of the classics that most impressed me this year was the new Detroit classic. It would not suprise me if this classic rival if not exceed the Motor City Bowl (providing it still exists).

Interesting Points!! One thing to consider is the fact that the although the attendance numbers may play in our favor, the payouts are no where close to being the same.

Attendance matters

http://www.onnidan.com/bcsp/1021/stry10212.htm

Over 1 million devoted fans attended the top 30 black college football games in the 2003 season.

The annual Black College Sports Page listing of the top attended games unveiled this week shows that 30 games topped the 20,000 mark in attendance this year, up from 27 a year ago. Those top 30 games drew 1,117,992 fans, an average of 37,266 per game.

The top 27 games a year ago drew a total of 932,746 fans, an average of 35,546 fans per game.
Orlando's Florida Classic pitting in-state rivals Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M topped the list for the fourth straight year, drawing 73,358 for this year's exciting 39-35 B-CC win.

The Bayou Classic in New Orleans between Louisiana rivals Grambling State and Southern finished second for the third year in a row. A crowd of 70,151 packed the Superdome to watch another thriller as Southern knocked off the G-Men 44-41 en route to winning the SWAC and black college championships.

The in-state rival theme continued as the third largest crowd (63,117) witnessed the Magic City Classic battle between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, won by A&M, 20-17.

The newest entrant into the top ten was the inaugural Detroit Classic played at the new Ford Field that drew 54,941 to the Florida A&M vs. Alabama State matchup won by 'Bama State, 38-22.

Classic Attendance

As they say, black college Classic games are the bomb.
A look at 2003 NCAA attendance statistics released on Dec. 20, shows that the top 19 neutral-site games are of the black college Classic variety. The numbers are a testament to the fact that no one else on the Div. I-AA level can draw the numbers and fill the major venues like black college Classic games.

The only I-AA schools to make the neutral-site list are The Citadel with a game in Charlotte, N.C., and Maine, with a date in Portland, Me.
By School

Florida A&M, who is moving from NCAA Div. I-AA to Div. I football, is listed as the top black college in I-AA football attendance this year. The Rattlers averaged 21,343 fans for their three home games this season to finish behind Yale (23,578 avg.) and Montana (22,469 avg.) in the national statistics.

Southern, which drew an average of 19,732 fans for its six home games finished just behind FAMU in fourth place.

Two other black college finished in the top ten, perennial leader Jackson State was sixth at 18,196 for its five home games and North Carolina A&T eighth at 16,066 for four dates. Four other black colleges finished in the top 20, Texas Southern (13), Norfolk State (15), Tennessee State (17) and Grambling State (20).

Great post Jafus....

The only flaw with their data is the Atlanta Classics was left out. I think the Georgia Power Atlanta Classic edged out the BC this year by 1 or 200 people and should be #2.

It's easy to compare the crappy bowls to big classics. Biggest classic drew 70'ish K, the Rose Bowl drew around 90K, not to mention the national championship hasnt been played yet.

BCF Classic

An economic impact report on the locales would be nice. I was told that the Magic City Classic had a larger economic impact on B'ham than when the Iron Bowl (Auburn/Alabama) was played. MCC fans would arrived and spend money all week whereas the ALabama and Auburn fans would drive in for the game and leave the city afterward. I know for a fact many of my family and friends from all over the country come to the MCC game every year and spend lots of cash on housing, food and shopping. I was told that LA and Nawlins would generate more revenue if LSU was not playing in the Sugar Bowl.

**I thought the su/txsu game was played at Roberson Stadium on the campus of U of H?

**The Grambling/alcorn game was played in Alcorn, MS this year

Where is SU's first home game? SU -vs- Alabama State had similar attendance to SU's homecoming game. I don't remember the exact attendance but it should be on the list. Anybody got that attendance figure handy?

G-Que, all I have to say is that the NCAA is made up of College Presidents, ADs and a few others on committees and they are well versed on what we are doing. I keep saying that we need to challenge some of the voting that takes place in the NCAA, but when some people get a committee position they are just happy to be there. A lot of 1AA PWCs would love to get involved with classics. UTC tried to sucker us into one with them and pay us $25,000 to play.

We take things too lightly, when we can make an impact on the future of Black College Football. :)

...MD, I know what you are talking about...as for UTC, they are not in "any" position to try to sucker anyone...least of all an HBCU...here is a school that can't even average 5,000 per game and after Alabama State beat them in 2002, they dropped the one classic(River City Classic) which has the highest attendance ever for the new stadium and HBCU...Tennessee State was the opponent when the new stadium opened and drew a capacity crowd in excess of 22K...in the old stadium, TnState was the best draw and Alcorn(with Air McNair in 1995) was the 2nd best draw...it's the good ole' boys(in UTC's Admin) that want the crowd but they can't stand to get their butt kicked by an HBCU...you are right on point with us making an impact on the future of Black College Football
