Alabama State University’s science program is leading the way in a model energy conservation program that will advance the study of biodiesel fuels, allow students to study conservation methods, and help make the Earth a “greenerâ€￾ place to live.

Wednesday, ASU, the Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) announced a three-way partnership to establish a “Save the Environmentâ€￾ program, which will produce biodiesel fuel from recycled cooking oils for use in MPS buses and other equipment they use.

The scientific portion of the program will be administered by Alabama State University.

“The university is proud to be part of this coalition because it expands the possibilities of finding new energy sources,â€￾ said ASU President William Harris at a special media launch held at the state’s Center for Alternative Fuels Wednesday.

“It is important to point out that we are actually making something that will benefit science and society and we are doing it in concert with the school system and the state of Alabama,â€￾ Harris said. “We hope to be involved for years in studying and refining the process of making alternative energy an important part of Alabama.â€￾
