Alabama State University’s College of Health Sciences will now offer a Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO).

ASU will be the only University in the state of Alabama to offer the MSPO degree. There are only 10 Prosthetics and Orthotic education programs in the U.S.
The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved the degree program on Friday, March 11, 2011.

Dr. Steven Chesbro, dean of the College of Health Sciences, said the program is very significant in many ways for ASU.

Congrats on being the only school in Alabama to offer the MSPO. That' a definite feather in the Hornet's cap.

Now, let's get if fully staffed and funded.

Steven Chesboro, dean of the College of Health Sciences, said enrollment in the program is slated for the fall of 2012. The program is expected to accept six to eight students that first year.

Auburn Montgomery student Ben Percival, a senior from Dallas, hopes he'll be in that first class. The biology major already works in the business as he's employed at Alabama Artificial Limb and Orthopedic Services Inc. He said he plans to apply for the program.

Percival said the field has a lot of potential for those interested in designing, creating or fitting artificial limbs and orthopedic braces for people who need them. People who have had a stroke, spinal cord injury or amputation often receive services from a prosthetist or orthotist.

What makes it even better is a program like this will always likely get funding with
very little to no trouble. Who in their right mind wouldn't support such funding for
those who lost limbs due to accidents or wars. Politically, it's also a good move
that will keep the program strong and financially sound.
