Alabama State University gave its first update to the condition of its ailing football coach Wednesday.

Charlie Coe is doing well, school President Joe Lee said through a spokesman.

"He's doing fine and he's chomping at the bit to coach," Lee said. "He wanted to coach this weekend, but the doctors advised against it."

Coe won't be on the sidelines Saturday when the Hornets (5-2, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) play Alabama AM (5-3, 2-2) in the Magic City Classic.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Birmingham's Legion Field.

"We all know Coach Coe cares about this team," defensive lineman Timothy Parham said. "We know he wants to be with the team, but his health is more important. This gives us more inspiration to go out and play hard against Alabama AM."

Coe, 54, has been hospitalized since Friday after he experienced chest pains at Alabama State's football complex.

Two ASU players said Sunday they had been told Coe had undergone open heart surgery. Neither the school or the hospital has confirmed or denied that.

On Sunday, a Jackson Hospital spokeswoman said Coe was in cardiovascular intensive care.

Since, the Coe family has restricted access to Coe's condition and the hospital has only been able to confirm that Coe is a patient. Senior receiver Chad Lucas said he tried to visit Coe or his family Monday, but was turned away from the hospital.

Defensive coordinator Tony Pierce, a friend of Coe's since they coached together at the University of Pittsburgh in the 1990s, said he planned to try to visit Coe this week. The Hornets signed a get-well card for Coe and gave it to Pierce on Wednesday.

"I'm looking forward to him coming back as soon as possible," Pierce said.

Coe's wife, Debbie, and his mother -- both live in St. Louis -- were with Coe on Sunday, two ASU assistants said. Coe's son, Michael, remained with the University of Arkansas football team this week, an Arkansas spokesman said.

Pierce became the Hornets' acting interim head coach after Coe was hospitalized. Coe was named ASU's interim head coach in August after L.C. Cole was suspended for alleged NCAA rules violations.
