You can hardly turn on the television without coming across one of the many popular forensic crime dramas such as “CSI: New York” or “CSI: Miami.”

Now, Alabama State University is preparing to introduce “CSI: ASU.” The University will introduce two new degree programs in the forensic science field beginning fall 2011.

The degree programs, a Bachelor of Science degree in forensic chemistry and a Master of Science degree in forensic science, were authorized Dec. 10 by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.

“This came about through the efforts of Rep. John Knight and other members of the Alabama Legislature,” said Dr. Alfred Smith, ASU’s interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “The programs later received additional support from ASU’s Board of Trustees.”

The Bachelor of Science degree in forensic chemistry at ASU will be the only one of its kind offered by a public college or university in Alabama. It will prepare students to pursue advanced education and enter professional careers in the forensic sciences. Student applications will be accepted through the Forensic Science Programs office in ASU’s Department of Physical Science.

The Master of Science degree in forensic science at ASU will become one of only two programs offered by public universities in Alabama. The 42-hour program is designed to prepare graduate students with science majors to enter and practice in the field of forensic evidence examination. Graduate students applying to the program must meet general requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies.
