Are HBCUs becoming more of an entertainment value for others?????????????

THE NEW AMERICA'S TEAM
Here's a excerpt taken from page 92 from a thesis written by a LSU graduate student entitled, "ARE YOU BETTER OFF‖;
RONALD REAGAN, LOUISIANA, AND THE 1980 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION"

The most controversial race-related event that occurred during Reagan‘s campaign in Louisiana happened when the California governor spoke at LSU in Baton Rouge on September 23. Approximately 175 Southern University students protested their school band‘s performance at the event because contractual obligations forced the band members to play against their will. Some students temporarily blocked the band‘s busses from leaving campus. One student said, ―How come Ronald Reagan couldn‘t come to Southern? Southern does not support Ronald Reagan. By playing at the rally, it shows the world we support him. We do not.‖277 Vernon English, a member of the United People Organization on Southern‘s campus, criticized the band‘s involvement at the event by saying, ―[Southern‘s administrators] were being pulled and puppeted around…They gave us (the band) uniforms for our looks, but what about our books? They‘re trying to say ‗Keep us as entertainers, but not as leaders.‘ We‘re being made fools out of.‖

I remember when this happen. The quote from Vernon English, which I highlighted in red, seems to be more evident today, especially with the death of Robert Champion during a FAMU's band hazing incident.

I dont' see the connection.

But to answer your question in a general sense, no...I don't think HBCU's are becoming more of an entertainment value for others. If you're trying to focus on the marching band...then technically it is an ensemble for entertainment purposes that is a part of the University. You already know the usual argument...PWC's marching bands are used at political events as well.

Becoming?

Isn't the article about something that happened 30 years ago?

Please don't act like y'all just became aware that Black folks are considered entertainment by many. Fools to sing and dance for their amusement.

Which is why Tyler Perry can get funding for Madea but we can't get black action heroes...

Seems to me 30 years ago there were HBCU students trying to bring attention to the political madness, today’s HBCU student seem to accept the fact that their primary purpose is to amuse others. HBCU students today seems way too passive.

Tyler Perry funds his own films for the most part.

Tyler Perry is able to do this by fictionally combining emotional Black drama with comedy on the big screen. Emotional drama and comedy does well in the Black community today.

The problem in our community is we wanna separate ourselves into classes. every class with in those classes we form have issues with each other. Educated vs non-educated. Rich vs middle class vs poor. Businessman vs corporate America man. Material man vs Frugal man. Hip hop vs Rb vs gospel man.

*JSU students protested at the State Capital in recent years
*FAMU marching band participated in a rally for then US Senator Barack Obama while he was campaigning in FL in 2008
*JSU Students and Greek Orgs are constantly doing voter registration drives on campus, and I'm sure it's happening at other HBCU's across the Country
*JSU students/adminstrators hosted US Senatore Barack Obama while he was campaigning in 2008
*Black Political activist are always speaking at JSU

What exactly are you looking for?

Just b/c the news isn't as wide spread as the FAMU hazing incident doesn't mean it's not happening...

I do agree with Jag89 that today's youth are passive. Not only are they passive, they are naive and spoiled. I must also say that it is not their fault totally, their parents played a role of letting them forget where we as a people came from and what it took to get here. All we a as a people see is 2012. We could careless about 1960, 1970 0r 1980.

Very astute posts.

Brings the dumbfvcks @ Prairie View to mind who allow PV's band to perform numerous times (several that I know of dating back to the 80s :smh: ) @ aTm's kyle-field BUT they assuredly wouldn't allow PV's football team to gain a 550,000$ payday by playing on that exact same field. But, if you wanna' hunch and screw the ground/air, come black face, do your jig.

Where they trying to merge the cafeteria?

The Governor and some State Politicians were proposing to merge the three public HBCU's in the State of Mississippi (JSU, Alcorn, MVSU).

I'm sorry...I thought that was understood. My bad...

Hmmmm...seems our HBCU students aren't the only ones out of touch with polticis.

As vague as your answer was, one can only AssUMe. Thanks for adding clarity to your answer. Now it's a lot clearer. Most people would be out of touch with the vague answers that you give.

Just like you ASSumed HBCU students aren't involved with politics.

As much as it's been discussed on this board you didn't know why JSU students would be protesting against "the merge"!?! :lmao:

Then you capitalized the wrong letters in "Assume"!! :lmao:

Close this thread!! :emlaugh:

"The Merge", I guess it only pertain to the HBCUs in Mississippi?

So going back to you second reply on this thread, was it Georgia State Capital or Mississppi State Capital that JSU's student held their protest rally?

David Peaston died today at the age of 54.

Don Cornelius killed himself yesterday, gunshot wound to the face (probably head).

The trainer for Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard died yesterday at the age of 90

Did you see my thread I started about MOrgan Freeman sleeping with his step granddaughter!?!? I think she's 27. That thread is way more interesting than this one. 97JSULegend admitted to sleeping with his cousin in that thread and Cee said he understood why.

Thanks for all your random threads. If you keep this up, maybe you can find a cure for cancer.
