Are HBCU Athletic Directors Negotiating These Money Games Effectively?

Reggie Barlow was on a CSS show with the Two Live Stews last week talking about this subject. He stated that OSU wanted to play us instead of SSU but when the SWAC-MEAC Challenge came through we backed out of the game. He basically said that the money looks and sounds good but the expected results of the outcome wasn't worth the money. After looking at highlights or lowlights of Savannah State getting trampled the past two weeks I hope we never play one of these games.

Alabama State has Kentucky next year!

If Alcorn & Jackson are getting in the $300k range for playing MSU and then Sav St gets $400k for playing OK St then I say the answer to this question is NO. We have been so stuck on HBCUs competing against each other for so long that we are decades behind the rest of the country. Scheduling money games are how you build your program - where else will the money come from? Bobby Bowden did it with FSU, Jeff Bower with USM (less in avg attendance but probably the best stadium in MS) and word is Boise St won't travel to play anybody for under $900k. Last year during the so-called 'state of the swac' meeting held in Jackson, Casem talked about our schools taking whatever somebody offers us w/o holding out for more or a better deal. In that particular case he was talking about advertisement, but I think it covers everything across the board.

Ya'll must be forgetting.
Arkansas State is FBS.

No I didn't, I was looking at how big the gap in pay was between the two schools and questioned if we, meaning HBCUs', could do better. I believe we can, scroll up and look at post #16.

Arkansas State
two checks = 1.95 million

Savannah State
two checks = 860,000

Florida A&M
two checks = 1.5 million

It appears we can do better based on the Florida A&M figure.

That's what I am looking at.

Oh yeah... the SSU AD said they will have two more money games next year as well....

I read that info somewhere too. The thing is if their A.D. negotiated in the same manner for those games as these last two games Savannah State has played in, it is possible they will have played twice as many money games as Florida A&M, but have less to show for it.

Opening the season at Oregon was a recipe for disaster — Malzahn says he thinks the Ducks might be better in 2012 than two years ago, when Auburn edged them to win the national title — but it was also a necessity. The Red Wolves were paid $950,000 for Saturday's loss. In two weeks, they'll receive $1 million more to play Nebraska in Lincoln. The paydays are critical to balancing Arkansas State's $13.3 million budget, and yet potentially devastating to a fledgling program.

two checks = 1.95 million

No. 18 Oklahoma State romped to an 84-0 rout, handing Savannah State its eighth straight defeat going back to last season.
"We had to make an even bigger line for Florida State," Cantor said, "because we think Florida State is better than Oklahoma State."
Savannah State (0-1) scheduled these first two games strictly for the money. The school is collecting paychecks totaling $860,000, which will go a long way toward helping the financially strapped athletic program meet its total budget of $5.1 million.

two checks = 860,000

easy here,

You know what.....Those big school really don't have to play nor pay HBCU'S.......ARKANSAS STATE BEAT TEXAS SOUTHERN 83-0 TWO MYEARS AGO ....WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO AN HBCU SCHOOL THAT PLAYS OREGON.......COME ON FOLK.....IF ARKANSAS STATE CAN BE KILLED BY 50...WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL THE SCORE BE IF THEY PLAYED AN HBCU......THEY ARE REALLY NEGOIATING A FEE AS A FAVOR TO HBCU SCHOOLS I THINK......SO TAKE THE MONEY AND BUTT WHOOPING AND RUN.......

Folks laughed when Ammons said we wont show up anywhere for less than 600,000k.

Skeptics always laugh or accuse visionaries of being a damn fool. Ammons had the right idea, and it appears he was ahead of his time for HBCUs. Now that we know it can be done, we either as individual institutions or collectively should forged ahead with the knowledge of what is possible. I wonder how many of the other A.D.s know what you all have been able to do.

Easy, go back and read post #16 & #28. What Florida A&M was able to do blows a whole in the argument you're making.

easy here,

Law Dawg, I understand what you are saying about the payment outcome being more for certain schools but HBCU'S really don't have any negoiating power when it comes to how much they are to be paid. FAMU seems to be more of an atractive game than SSU. Believe me , LSU playing SU will be far better than playing BOWIE STATE......SSU just arrived in FBS a year or two ago.....playing Florida State is like a giant donation......I really beLieve that those big schools offer a contract AS IS....OU has enough money to pay them a huge chunk....FAMU AND SSU PLAYED 2 FCS SCHOOL.....MORE SWAC SCHOOLS NEED TO ADD THOSE MONEY GAMES...I AM PRETTY SURE SCHOOLS LIKE GSU, SU AND JSU ALONG WITH THEIR BANDS CAN GO OUT WEST OR EVEN IN THE EAST AND MAKE MONEY....GRAMBLING DID IT DURING THE LATE 60'S AND 70'S AND EDDIE ROB AND COLLIE BECAME MILLIONARES........

He was talking about FCS classics and he was lying, since Yall only get $450k for the ATL Classic and less for the JMC.

FAMU CLIFF, perhaps this is the reason Ammons was being laughed at. So actually he had the right idea, but came up short on making it a reality.....well with other FCS institutions that is.

I'm hoping the SEC expansion will cause this game to be cancelled. I have looked on a couple of D1 future schedule sites and I still have not seen this game on a Kentucky schedule. But if we have to schedule a SEC team Kentucky may be a good choice. By no means am I expecting us to win the game just score at least 3 touchdowns and don't lose by more than 4 touchdowns. With the opening of the new stadium I would like to see us invite a MEAC or one of the stronger SIAC schools to Montgomery.
