Archie Cooley.... What is his legacy

I think that first of all he was extremely innovative offensively. He spread the field and ran an extremely exciting offensive scheme. He also has to get some credit for the success Jerry Rice had. Obviously GOAT had some athleticism, talent and from what I have been told an unbelievable work ethic in him when he got to The Valley. However The Gunslinger used his talents along with Willie Totten and others and got them exposure they might not have gotten in a conventional offense. Finally he used the offense to narrow the gap for an under-resourced program and made them very competitive for a stretch.
Not quite sure what exactly happened at UAPB. That was not a great chapter in his legacy, fair or not.

As far as legacy, you have to include the good (what happened at Valley (and even Paul Quinn) with all the records and innovation as well as the (really really) bad (UAPB).

Like a lot of stuff that needs to be brought to light to mainstream media (whenever the opportunity presents itself), he needs to be recognized as arguably the Godfather of all the spread offenses that everyone from high school to the NFL utilizes.

You should put Cooley up there with Mouse Davis when it comes to folks that helped popularize spread offenses.
