We have a horrible team and staff and yes it was a very bad hire. Many of us did drink the kool-aid in hopes that Stump would be considerably better than Pete, however that kool-aid was vinegar and Stump has quickly put a bitter taste in the mouths of the Jaguar faithful.
Stump was a RB coach on the national level...hiring him to coach a collegiate team based on that was a dumb mistake. Also his record at Morgan St. should have been brought into the discussion. An RB coach really focuses on the backs running style and blocking techniques. So Stump really didnt know how to game plan or make adjustments as a head coach should. We just have to accept the fact and admit that we got a bad coach leading the football team right now. We did have a better field of candidates and I do have to admit I was against the hiring of Doug for SU because I felt that he only wanted that job to serve as a vendetta for some of the things that occurred during his stint at Gram. Heish or Asberry would have been a better hire than Stump. But guess what...it seems that we are stuck with him for the moment. Now the bright side...(yes there is one- yet slight) The bright side is that Stump can only improve...because right now he is as bad as it gets and there is nothing else to do but get better. I think/hope that he has learned a great deal about the style of play in the SWAC...and hopefully in the off-season he will have a come to Jesus meeting with himself, his staff, and his team and all work on getting better in their respective duties.
When I was at homecoming, I saw an 11-man blitz...and was like WTH!!! Everyone in the stands was laughing at such a horrible display of talent and we still won the game due to playing against a T. Graves defense at Miss Valley. I really started to send the staff a Coaching for Dummies book...because it could honestly help...but as I sure they would be highly offended...I didnt send it!
SU athletics have gotten to the state where they are because of loyalty...Pete was loyal to his assts. which resulted in him being fired. LaFleur was loyal to his friend. I don't know who is loyal to Spivery...but he has turned the basketball program from sugar to you know what.
Bottom line...we have work to do to get where we need to be...its just time to get started doing that work...
By the way, Easy, your comments are right on point!!!
