An Upsetting Story....It Really Hit Me

I think I told you all the story about a friend of my son who was arrested. If not here is the story.

My son (wife's son not my biological son but he calls me daddy and I consider him my son), his cousin who was 18 at the time, and a friend went to Wal-Mart in Bossier City. The 18 year old went to buy some head phones for his birthday. While he was shopping my son and his friend were looking around.

Well the friend had $30 in his wallet but instead buying a charger he decides to steal a charger. He took the charger in the restroom and opened the package in order to steal it. My son was sitting outside the bathroom. Well when the cousin purchased his items they leave out and Wal-Mart loss prevention stops them. They let the cousin go but apprehend my son and his friend.

Wal-Mart felt that my son was the look out and the friend was stealing. Police were called and they called both kids parents. When we questioned my son he stated that his friend said to wait outside. As my wife has always said "parents know their kids." She knew right off the bat that it was some bullshit. Of course when he got home he got his ass whooped and then I sternly counseled him.

Well the friend has always asked my advice so I decided to go and talk with him at his home. His mother was there and I basically talked to him about right and wrong and consequences.

Well his dad comes home and I introduce myself he didn't shake my hand, he then asked his live in girlfriend (the mother-who by the way is a distant relative of my wife) who I was. She told him and then stated "I don't know nothing about that shit." I continued to speak to his son because I can recognize a coward a mile away. My son was with me as well. When I left I explained to my son that often times kids can be a representation of their parents and that we are hard on him because he knows better.

Well about a week later my son's biological father tells him to tell me that the guy felt disrespected that I counseled his son and that his is not required to pay the white man for anything and should just take it. The dad claims to be one of these "woke" Muslims. Notice he told another man to tell his son to tell me. After that I distanced myself from the kid. I felt that I didn't need all that cowardice bullshit in my life.

Well last night I was told that the kid was arrested for theft from a pharmacy. He was trying to steal prescription drugs. When they went to his home they found more prescription drugs in his dad's room and the father was arrested. It really bothered me because before I distanced myself from the kid he was asking about enrolling in college, playing football, and joining the military.

A part of me feels like I failed this kid because now he is a part of the system.

How can you save someone who obviously doesn't want to be saved?

You did your part, Found. You extended your wisdom (the life preserver) to the younger and he ignored it and continued to self-sacrifice himself, penally suicide himself, & voluntarily seek wrong - drown himself. His choice, his bed, he must lay in it, not you.

Shit Founder that's thre biggest problem when we are reaching out to help someone now. You give your part but if the life at home is going against the grain with you when it comes to making better choices in life how can you win? You did your part.

Founder...you did good. But as we constantly say, parents must do their part. Now, I'm mad at the boy's mother...she knows her kid and her man...she should have stood up and had that one big ass fight, moved dad out or she leave and slap the back of her son's head for his BS. Instead...they are now both gone, got records and she is out of money and stressed to high heaven.

It's sad really. My son called me this morning because he is completing his school year there before moving and I could hear in his voice how he is just ready to leave that environment. He is growing in to his own person and seeing the treament of black males and also how black males in situations like this lack the proper guidance to be successful.

There are a number of young men on his junior football team that I frequently speak to who are fatherless and I know my time will be limited to going there when he (my son) moves. Having been on the other sides of those bars I came to realization that many of those guys were not bad people but made bad decisions and lacked guidance.

Guys, seriously I know many of us are stepping up but ALL of us who are successful have to step up. These young men need to see us rather than the numerous guys living illegally or the lying rappers on TV.

If you work for a Fortune 500 company ask them to start a mentoring program, we men have to do something. Even if it means an all out battle against those guys like his dad.

The HARDEST thing I've EVER had to do in this life is ignore people who obviously didn't want to be saved while looking straight ahead, not left, not right, and most definitely not back while pressing forward towards the goal(s) and attempting to help those on the EXACT same path towards attaining those goals/objectives that we hold as priority.

When I was all of 2-3 years young, I VIVIDLY recall my big momma saying some of the most important words anyone has ever spoken to me.... "you CANNOT listen and LEARN if you are talking...." I made SURE I made time to listen, listened intently, did not speak, listened intently, and recalled everything that was being thrown @ me (wisdom and knowledge) equally applied to EVERY setting (work, church, school, homes). Some would do better to speak to an unpainted wall rather than wasting time towards someone who obviously is intent on not listening, not interested in what you are saying, and shows their physical disdain w/ facial expressions or even walking away from you as you are attempting to pass great wisdom and knowledge on to them. God didn't bless me w/ the special gift to speak to a wall seeking to save the wall.

I don't know. They caught the son stealing from behind pharmacy and decided to get a search warrant for the house.

How can anyone attempt to reason w/ someone who harbors a mindset to believe that stealing from behind the counter @ a pharmacy is somehow magically okay?

smh You're a good one, Found. I was not blessed w/ that special gift of patience to see good in something that looks, acts, does, walks, talks, ... bad/negative.

Beans I have no idea. Got this info from my son.
I'm elated you are not wasting anymore of your valuable time and wisdom on someone unworthy. Now, lets find that one who will adhere to and cherish you & your words of wisdom & knowledge. He's out there, waiting for us to help him.

I'm just pressing to get my son out of there. He is so ready to move.
