AAMU-SU gameday notes.

Game basics
Alabama A&M (0-1) at Southern (0-1)
Mumford Stadium, Baton Rouge, La., 6 p.m.
Radio: 90.9 FM
This game will determine ...
If Alabama A&M is going to be a contender or a pretender for the SWAC championship. A loss would send shock waves through Bulldogs country. Southern is 2-10 under second-year coach Stump Mitchell and that includes a 34-14 thumping by A&M last season in Huntsville. If the Bulldogs don't beat the Jaguars, who were trounced 33-7 last week by Tennessee State, talk of coach Anthony Jones' possible contract extension will go away, particularly when you consider how A&M collapsed last week against Hampton.
Three things to look for:
1. Quarterback Deaunte Mason. Mason had a field day last year against Southern, accounting for almost 300 yards in total offense and four touchdown passes. Mason had 295 yards in total offense, more than any other quarterback in the SWAC last week, in a 21-20 loss to Hampton.
2. Running back Kaderius Lacey. Lacey recorded his fourth career 100-yard game last week and should get his fifth tonight. Southern allowed 342 yards rushing last week against Tennessee State, including a whopping 7.1 yards per carry average.
3. Alabama A&M's defensive line. This unit got little done last week. Three first-time starters [- DE Phillip Harvey and DTs Montay Rover and Jawanza Vickers [- are being asked to play a lot better.
Key matchup: Alabama A&M's secondary vs. Southern quarterbacks Dray Joseph and J.P. Dousglas. The Bulldogs allowed only 99 yards passing last week, but free safety Rico Porch and company will be challenged tonight by the Jaguars' speedy receivers. In a losing effort last week, Joseph and Douglas combined to complete 16-of-33 passes for 263 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The return of senior cornerback Clarence Morris, who has been hampered by a pulled hamstring, could be a huge key.

Significant injuries
Alabama A&M: DT Tim Tillman (hamstring), DE Clarence Lovell (ankle) and DE Melvin Payne (ankle) are out.

Bulldogs and Jags collide in SWAC opener

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/09/alabama_am_bulldogs_jaguars_co.html

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - Not so long ago they were considered among the elite programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Southern, under former coach Pete Richardson, won four championships in the 1990s, won another in 2003 and played for another one in 2004. Meanwhile, Alabama A&M, who joined the conference in 1999, won the title in 2006 under current coach Anthony Jones and has played for it on four other occasions, most recently in 2009.
The Bulldogs nor the Jaguars are expected to be in contention this season based on the league's preseason rankings.
A&M was picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division preseason poll, while Southern, who is ineligible for the championship this season due to APR penalties, was picked to finish last in the West Division poll.
The rankings didn't sit too well with some of A&M's players when they were released in July. As a result, the Bulldogs have used the rankings as motivation as they visit the Jaguars tonight in the SWAC opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 6 from Mumford Stadium and the game can be heard on 90.9 FM.
"We're going to go out and show the SWAC that the preseason rankings don't mean anything," will linebacker Vernon Marshall said.
Since preseason practice began, the Bulldogs have closed practice by saying "SWAC Champs."
While the championship game is still three months away, A&M quarterback Deaunte Mason says today's league opener against Southern is the Bulldogs' championship game.
"We're taking every game as a championship game because that's what it takes to be No. 1 in the conference," Mason said. "We have to treat every game like it's a championship game."
A&M has won the last four meetings in this rivalry, including a 34-14 victory last season, but Jones knows the Bulldogs will get Southern's best tonight.
"We're going into a hostile environment," he said. "It's their home opener and their fans will be there. They're going to play hard and play physical. They've got some good athletes. It's going to be a tough football game and we've got to be ready to play."
Southern coach Stump Mitchell's team was dominated in last year's game and he knows his team better be ready for another slugfest tonight.
"They handled us pretty easily last year," Mitchell said. "We've just got to be able to match their intensity. It's a physical brand of football. It's been a physical brand of football since Coach Jones has been at A&M. And we have to be ready for that type of football game."

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

Well the reason Hampton did not throw the ball as much last week because they took advantage of the injuries for AAMU.

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

Whats the point of your post then.... just get to the stadium so you can witness the game first hand and report observations.
Because the reporter was on Jaguar Journal saying AAMU had a shut down secondary. I was just saying, that Hampton did not have to throw the ball in the 2nd half.

:lmao: @ get to the stadium.

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

Great start for the Jags, Smoke Evans takes a short pass and turns it up for a 72 yard score.

AAMU 0
SU 7

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

I sure hope/pray this momentum keeps up the entire game...this defense better step it up tonight.

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

SU's defense continues to bend but not break, AAMU goes for it on 4th and 9 and fails. SU takes over at its own 27 up 14-0.

Re: AAMU-SU gameday notes.

Man it don't surpise me. This is a coach Jones team. Same results, new year.

It's still early Cee. Right now I think SU just caught A&M off guard. Our WRs are pretty fast if they hang on to the ball. This game will be won or lost with adjustments.
