AIG bonuses - Information

NEW YORK - President Barack Obama on Monday issued a blistering attack on American International Group and pledged to stop the struggling insurance and investment giant from paying out millions in executive bonuses.

AIG has taken $170 billion in federal bailout funds, and the company announced over the weekend that it was bound contractually to pay out tens of millions in executive bonuses, prompting a storm of criticism inside the Obama administration.

The $165 million was payable to executives by Sunday and was part of a larger total payout reportedly valued at $450 million.

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

Imagine if any one of you democrates worked for AIG... I hope you all know the executives aren't the only folks to recieve bonuses.... What kind of world are we creating here? "NWO", get ready.. most of you all called it a conspiracy... But here it come....

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

Plain and simple, if you are not turning profits and you have to borrow taxpayers money to stay afloat, no bonuses. This is just practical business sense.

I kind of have to go with Jared on this one. Obama needs to leave this alone nd just complain. The idea of the government telling businesses wht to do with their money is not cool. What they should've done is not gave them sh*t in the first place.

That money wasn't given with no stipulations, so why are they acting surprised that these guys pretty much paid themselves off.

If they have money for bonuses, they shouldn't need money given in order to survive.

AIG is full of shat from top to bottom, period. They shouldn't have gotten a dime in the first place.

The money was given with stipulations, use it to save the company. Keep people employeed, so how are they going to do that by giving it away. If the government wouldn't have help AIG how many thousands of people would have been out of work? How would you feel if a friend borrowed money from you to save a car or house from being taken. Then turned around an gave it to his girlfriend for all of her hard work?

Please show me in writing where it said they had to use that money in a certain way. They(Washington) are fools if they thought they could just give these compaines loans and expect them to do "the right thing".

The people that own these companies have a lot invested in them. In this crisis the company has a good chance of falling, so these owners get these gov loans and pretty much pay themselves what they are expecting to lose and then some.

Obama is a fool if he think he is going to see any of that money again.

Obama is just feeding off the media's frenzy! Obama should have addressed bonuses before bailing out AIG. :retard:

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

AIG's hands are in too many companies to let it just fail...

AIG started receiving bailout money BEFORE Obama got in office.

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

The main problem is that some of you think there is a difference between a democratic and republican president.... If McCain would have been in office the same would be happening.. The government is on a POWER mission both parties and the American people as a whole don't see it... Which is _ _ _ !!

Yeah...b/c this situation was put in place prior to ANY new Administration taking office. smh

AIG was bailed out before Obama was elected president.

Man, I'm glad somebody said it!!!

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

 Soggy you know it doesn't matter, they expect SuperNi@@er to git hur dun in two months, what those crooks screwed up in eight years

No one is expecting that. Be reasonable.

Obama was part of those crooks that helped screw it up. This ain't bashing, hell I voted ofr the man, but it is the truth.

When it was time to vote for this AIG bailout, which wasn't a part of TARP, he voted present instead of saying no and any article you find, you will find he vocally supports the bailout of AIG, but doesn't actually do nothing about keeping track of the loot

News of the latest AIG bonuses only compounded the political problems that the huge expenditures pose for the president. The administration has tried to manage the public anger by expressing empathy with the outrage over the large outlays to financial firms, while explaining that they are necessary to stabilize the economy.

Earlier this month, the administration added to the bailout money needed to keep AIG functioning, saying failure of the company would be disastrous for the larger economy. And the administration is all but certain to return to Congress for hundreds of billions of dollars more to aid the financial system

Obama's AIG Outrage: All Talk, No Action

This might be me, but I think he is better than the cat that was before him and should be held at a higher standard than Bush, because from what he says, he actually cares about what's going on. I think he has the ability to fix this thing, but we owe it to him and ourselves to not be like conservatives were the last eight years and ignore everything and act like "our president can do no wrong".

Man, I'm glad somebody said it!!!

The POINT is any president other BUSH would have put this in place... Yall too caught up on these President's names....
Remember we only get to pick from 2.. Because most of you completely ignore the other candidate the MEDIA isn't following.... Which means whom ever the media follows is who we have to pick from.... The Media is under the full control of the CFR - Council of Foriegn Relations... We think we have a choice, when the choice is already made for us... Some of yall will wake up sooner or later.... The way they are trying to restructure this country I would bet on "sooner"....lol....

The Democrates even Obama BEEN knew about these bonuses. And the stipulations CLEARLY stated they could have their bonuses....Most of the money that was given to AIG was basically money to force to the BANKS that did not want the initial "bailout money".... All of this is to take attention off of this economy that is about to SINK and the American Currency will be done with.... All I can say is "get ready", save your money and get out of debt.

You my brother is a realist, you like many isn't sucked into "PARTISM".. That's an easy way to become a slave...
When folks stop being followers and start doing their own thinking we will get this country to what it should be.

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

Some of you may be missing the point about this outcry. It's not really about the bonuses owed...it's about the operation of business going foward. The US companies are basically being told that we have to do business a different way now. This is just to bring media attention to companies to MAKE them more cautious of that they can/should do. I work for the government and we have been working on the same budget for 4 years now! I have not even had a full-time technical supervisor for over a year because the budget we have won't allow me to get a raise AND hire me a boss. lol Something is wrong with that picture. I got two raises last year (that are automatic..not earned) and we have govt money to give to the private sector yet the govt can't even take care of govt business. So hopefully, the govt can fix ya'll schitt so they can fix my schitt. :D

You all should stop being so technical about everything. :lecture:

So you think the government have the right to tell a company what type of bonuses they should give? Interesting....

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

So you think the government have the right to tell a company what type of bonuses they should give? Interesting....

I don't think they should tell them but they should be advised. Just like welfare....if you get it, the govt can't tell you how to spend it but if you take it to buy a new car and can't make it to the end of the month, that is on you. If these companies think they can give out bonuses without needed govt assistance, let them do their thang.

Do you think that we, as taxpayers, are responsible for paying millions in bonuses that are obviously not in the budget? Who the hell is doing THOSE books.

Re: Obama seeking ways to block AIG bonuses

Clearly you're living in a cocoon or your doing what you claim that you're not and that's being partisan (which for a republican isn't to hard )

Every time we turn on the TV we're bombarded by extreme right wing conservatives whining about how he's doing a poor job and how the market is going deeper into a reccession and how he needs to do something about it now.

Negro please...do you even understand the workings of the house and senate? Do you actually believe his one present vote or the entire democrats vote would have stop this?

This might be me, but I think he is better than the cat that was before him and should be held at a higher standard than Bush, because from what he says, he actually cares about what's going on.

This might just be me but I think that's silly as hell. They all should be held to the same high standards, that's why were in this mess now or did you miss that?
