Jackson State will have a new offensive coordinator by Jan. 1 if athletic director Bob Braddy has his way.

Braddy acknowledged the importance of the hire considering the revenue from football is an essential part of the $6.5 million athletic budget.

"With the economic situation the way it is, certainly (poor football attendance) is going to impact our athletic program," Braddy said. "Football is a cash cow.

"If we don't make it in football, then our whole athletic program is going to suffer. That's why we've got to have support to survive."

Comegy will conduct a national search, Braddy noted, with no preference given to those with ties to Jackson State or the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The fourth-year coach will recommend a candidate to administration, but Braddy said he is confident that Comegy's selection would be approved.

"We don't want a Jacksonian that can't coach," Braddy said. "We are looking for the best person for the job.

"I'm not someone sold on (the idea) that a person has to be from that school in order to be successful. ... Qualifications exceeds family blood."

I think it's good that Coach Comegy will look for someone with no ties to JSU or the SWAC!!!! Lord knows I hope UAPB will do the same when it's time for us to pick our OC. We (SWAC) schools need to put qualification over loyalty and family blood.

Good luck, JSU.....................and UAPB!

I never really understood why it was so important to some that a potential hire have some prior university ties. Just hire the best person for the job if you ask me no matter where the guy coached before.

The SWAC is too hung up on recycling coaches. they need to get some new blood in the conference.

These names came from the Onnidan board. That was the "source".
